Ty Watches "I'm Totally Fine"

Over the weekend my wife and I watched the movie "I'm Totally Fine". I heard about this movie while listening to "This is Important". This is the "Workaholics" guys podcast. I enjoy this podcast quite a bit. It is not a rewatch show. The guys get together once a week and just chat about life. They talk about past projects, their lives, Buzz Ball drinks and current projects. One of those current projects is "I'm Totally Fine".

Kyle Newachek and Blake Anderson are in the movie. Kyle Newachek is a producer. Harvey Guillen, who Newachek works with on "What We Do in the Shadows", has a bit part. But the stars of the movie are Jillan Bell, who was a main character on "Workaholics", and Natalie Morales, one of Bell's best friends. The movie has a fairly simple premise. Bell and Morales are best friends, they own a soda company and Morales' character suddenly passes away. Bell is left to grieve and spends a weekend on a getaway all by herself. She shows up at the AirBnb she is staying in and things kind of start to go nuts. Bell and Morales had a party planned on that weekend, but Bell forgot to cancel everything. They show up and she cannot get them to go away or not set up. So Bell is left to a bunch of food and party supplies. After a night of drinking, where she downs a full bottle of champagne, Bell falls asleep by a fire. While asleep, the lights in the house flicker and flutter and it gets windy and loud outside. When she wakes up she is groggy and hung over. She eventually drinks some water and clams down. While waking up someone hands her a coffee. She thanks the person using her best friend's name. She then fully wakes up and realizes she is seeing a person who looks exactly like her deceased friend. She starts to freak out. She believes she is hallucinating. She figures this is all in her head. The person who looks like her friend keeps telling her she is an alien who has come down to Earth to give her 48 final hours with her best friend. The alien has all of her memories and can communicate. Bell goes along with this thinking it is all in her head. But when she really dives in, she goes for it.

This is where the movie really grabbed me. I was hooked. To see the two of them go on adventures, have a party, tell secrets and revelations, it is all so well done. Bell and Morales have tremendous chemistry. You can tell they are friends in real life. Bell controls this whole movie. She is doing some of her best work. She handles this situation with her character in a very relatable way. She crushes it. Morales is so good as this alien. She talks like a typical alien the whole time. And while you think it would wear you down, it never does. She is so believable and does a wonderful job as an alien who is starting to have human emotions. Newachek and Anderson are there, but their parts are so small. This is Bell's movie and she nails it. Morales is there too, but Bell is the star. I loved watching her performance.

I've been thinking about this movie ever since Friday night. I have also thought about what I would do if this situation actually happened to me. If I was given 48 hours with a newly deceased. close friend, what would I do? They ask and answer this question so well in the movie. It is a tough, and deep question, but the way they handle it is tremendous.

I want more and more people to seek this movie out. I like small movies like this. The story is also unique and fresh. This is not a remake or a retelling. This is not a sequel. This is a fresh idea and a fresh movie. Check it out. Seek it out and check it out. It is really wonderful.

Ty Watches "Werewolves Within"

I recently watched a movie I enjoyed. I feel like I have been seeing movies that I had high hopes for and they turn out to be not so good. It is kind of a bummer to be frank. But the movie I just watched, I had no idea really what it was going to be. The movie in question is called "Werewolves Within".

I had read that it was based on a video game, and since I do not play many video games, I had no idea what the game was like. I guess the game is a role player game, and you hunt werewolves. Seems easy enough, but those games are not for me. But, I did also see that Sam Richardson was a producer, and he was going to be the star. This got me hype when I read about it. I adore Richardson. He is so funny. He is unassumingly funny. He plays an every man type guy, but an every man that happens to be funny as hell. That kind of piqued my interest in this movie. Then I saw the reviews when it was released, and people seemed to really like it. It got really solid reviews in fact. When I checked the other day it was at, or around, 80 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and the user score was in the upper 80's. I usually dismiss critics' reviews when it is a movie I want to see, but it is a nice plus when reviews are, for the most part, very good. It makes it easier to swallow.

So I sat down the other day to fold laundry and that was going to be my time to watch. I had a ton to fold, so 90 minutes seemed perfect. And I truly enjoyed what I saw. This is a good movie. It has good scares and good humor. It is beautifully shot too. The snow and mountains and the CGI used at the end, it was done really well. The look of the cold actually made me cold when watching. And as I assumed, Richardson was wonderful. He is a forest ranger who moves to a new town. He is there to help the community reconcile a law that is trying to be passed by a gas and oil man. Then a random attack happens to a neighborhood dog and the townspeople start to turn against one another. Everyone thinks everyone else is a werewolf because the simple idea of one is floated by Richardson. It only gets wilder and scarier and funnier from there on out. Richardson stands out, but so does the rest of a great ensemble cast. Milana Vayntrub plays the town mail person. She is funny, sweet and seems to have a secret that she simply won't reveal. I really enjoyed her in this movie. Catherine Curtin is the B&B owner who's husband was one of the wolf's victims. She too is great. Wayne Duvall is the oil tycoon who is as old school and country as they come. Michaela Watkins and Michael Chernus are the crazy town people. Watkins makes wild dolls and Chernus is too handsy with other members of the town. Cheyenne Jackson and Harvey Guillen are a married rich couple who own a small vacation house in the town. They are hilarious. George Basil and Sarah Burns are another couple that are hoosier and dumb and love and hate one another at the same time. They both have some excellent line reads in the movie. Glenn Fleshler plays Emerson. He is the town recluse and the one everyone blames from the start. He also has a great story involving Mr Rogers. And Rebecca Henderson is the doctor in town fighting the oil tycoon. She is creepy and perfect in her role.

This movie, and this has been said many times, reminded me of a modern day "Clue". I was trying to figure out the twist the whole time, and it did not happen for me until it was fully revealed. I love when that happens. I had all these theories going on in my head, and they seemed to change every five minutes or so.

I love this movie. I love how it was all resolved. I thought the actors did a wonderful job. I am not going to get the video game, but I would be lying if I didn't say that I was semi interested in what the game looks like now. If you want a solid scare and a very good laugh, watch this movie. It is totally worth your 90 minutes.

Ty Watches "What We Do In the Shadows" Series Premier

Two weeks ago a show that I have been waiting on for almost a year now finally premiered. "What We Do in the Shadows" aired its pilot episode, and I have to say, it was tremendous.

I was a teeny tiny bit worried, because I adore the movie so very much. But, they knocked it out of the park. I shouldn't have been so wary because both Jermaine Clement and Taika Waititi were both attached, and gave their blessing. And man did it deliver. The pilot was pretty much like the first 10-15 minutes of the movie, with some added for TV type stuff. And it was so, so funny.

Right off the bat we meet the four main characters as they gather for a house meeting. The main vampire, the one who holds the meetings, is named Nandor, played by Kayvan Novak. He is so good as the typical fish out of water, that just wants things to run smoothly. He wants to have house meetings. He wants things to look nice for guests. He wants to make sure that the house is cleaned up after they have their feedings. He wants everyone to get along. One of my favorite scenes in the pilot revolved around him going to the store to get decorations for a big visitor, and he keeps calling crepe paper, "creepy" paper. It was hilarious. He also lights a paper skeleton on fire with a snap of the finger because he finds it classless.

We then meet the married vampires, Nadja, played by Natasia Demetriou, and Laszlo, played by Matt Berry. Nadja is a riot. She clearly doesn't like Laszlo, but due to circumstance and situation, it is best for her. She also creepily stalks a guy that she thinks is a reincarnation of a former lover of hers. The way she laughs is also very awkward, but also very funny. Matt Berry is a treasure. I am a big time fan of his, and to see him, finally, on a main stream, network-ish type show is well overdue. He is funny. He is dry and he rules. He also is pretty unhappy with his arrangement, but he accepts it. He loves to go hunt for food at night. He doesn't care for the house meetings, and voices his opinions loudly. And he sure loves to turn into a bat because he can fly instead of walk, which he doesn't care for either. I'm so excited to see where they take his character from here.

We also meet Nandor's familiar, a human that works for the vampire, Guillermo, played by Harvey Guillen. He is so sad and lonely, but Guillen plays it hilariously. To see him talk about why he wants to become vampire, due to a role by Antonio Banderas, was great. To see him clean the house, riotous. And to see him get "food" for his leaders, just tremendous. He is so funny. He clearly just wants to be turned into a vampire, but it seems like it will never come.

We also meet an energy vampire, and this was, in my opinion, the funniest part of the whole pilot. The energy vampire is named Colin, played by Mark Proksch. He is hilarious. To see him explain why he is a vampire made me howl. He talks about being the guy in the office that either talks about nonsensical things until the person is so bored they fall asleep, or to enrage people. To enrage people in the office, they show him jam a pencil into an electronic pencil sharpener over and over again. It was great. The other vampires also despise him. When they have people over to feed one night, they hide him away. But, he ends up talking to the victims, and he has bored them so much that their blood has no nutritional value. Again, it was so funny.

I'm so excited the show is finally on, and that it lived up to my personal hype. I cannot wait to watch the rest of the season, and to see it get renewed, hopefully, for many, many seasons. It is a treat.

It is a good thing his office is his house and the other tenants are his kids. Otherwise it would just be creepy.
