Ty's 2024-2025 NBA Preview: Title Favorites Division

Welcome to day six of my 2024-25 NBA countdown. Today I have the top five teams in my countdown. Tomorrow I will do my postseason predictions, including awards and Wednesday will be my men's NCAA basketball preview. Anyway, let's get to the top five teams.

At 5 I have the Philadelphia 76ers. The 76ers won the offseason. They got the biggest prize of all. Paul George is now a 76er. I know he has a hyperextended knee right now, but by all accounts, he should be good to go at the start of the season. George is a perfect fit with this team. He will add late game scoring and very good defense. This was a great move. Joel Embiid is going to scale back all the games he has played during the regular season since he became an all NBA player. I think this will help him out. He will be able to go all out all the time and he shouldn't get hurt nearly as much. I love this move and it should help keep him on the floor more often than not. Tyrese Maxey has vaulted into an upper tier caliber NBA player. He is such a good scorer, he fits wonderfully and he has gotten better every season since he has been in the league. Kelly Oubre Jr returned and he has looked very good since he joined Philadelphia. Kyle Lowry will be a very good, very pesky backup guard. They got Caleb Martin at one hell of a deal. He is a wonderful role player and he is gritty as hell. They also signed Reggie Jackson and Eric Gordon. The 76ers have been making solid moves to get great vets to add to their roster. They also signed Guerschon Yabusele, who was awesome in the Olympics. The 76ers made excellent offseason decisions and they could reap the rewards. They need to stay healthy.

At 4 I have the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder are ahead of schedule. They were the number 1 seed in the West last season, and they will probably be there again this year. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is elite. He is going to win an MVP, maybe even this season. He has elevated his play every season, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Lu Dort is a tank of a defender and he can shoot, well he can shoot sometimes. Getting Alex Caruso for Josh Giddey was a total robbery of the Bulls. Caruso is an upgrade in every possible way for the Thunder. Chet Holmgren shocked me and a bunch of other people when he played all 82 games last season. I don't see a repeat of that, but he is a pretty darn good rim defender. He does still need to bulk up though. Jalen Williams has taken a few steps each season. I now expect him to take a leap. He has all the tools to be a great second or third option on this team. Isaiah Hartenstein is going to add toughness and rebounding. He should be a nice change of pace for this team from Holmgren. Isaiah Joe is a pretty good shooter. Cason Wallace is fast as hell. The Thunder are young, good and ready to make the jump to a finals favorite. They're that good.

At 3 I have the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Timberwolves are a threat to the Thunder, and all other West teams for that matter. Anthony Edwards is awesome. He is one of the best young players in the league. He has confidence and the ability to crush in the NBA, which he is already kind of doing. AE is one of my favorite players in the league. He is endlessly watchable. Rudy Gobert is a head case, but the dude can play defense. He is big and strong and can move. He is the best rim protector in the NBA. Mike Conley has fit in quite nicely as the head vet in the league. He is constantly mentoring the younger dudes, and they seem to love it. Jaden McDaniels is an elite defender. He is as lockdown as they get in the league. Naz Reid is coming off a Sixth Man of the Year award, and he will get more responsibility now, which he can definitely handle. They got Donte DiVincenzio and Julius Randle in the KAT trade. This is a good deal for all teams. Randle brings scoring and DiVincenzio brings space and shooting. And I really like the Rob Dillingham pick for depth. The Timberwolves are relevant, they have a superstar and they are fun as hell to watch play basketball.

At 2 I have the New York Knicks. When doing this countdown I couldn't believe that I had them ranked this high, but here we are. Jalen Brunson is a superstar. All he needed was the correct amount of minutes and a front office and coaching staff that believed in him. He got both with the Knicks. They got Karl Anthony-Towns in the aforementioned trade. He is going to do pretty well with this team. He is a solid defender, he loves to shoot and he has a past with Tom Thibodeau. They also acquired Mikal Bridges via trade this offseason. He adds a ton of what they need. He is a shooter, a slasher and a very good defender. OG Anunoby, when he is healthy, is a very good Swiss army knife of a player. He is one of the best defenders in the NBA. Josh Hart does it all. And he never leaves the floor. Mitchell Robinson is hurt yet again. But, when he is on the floor, he is a strong rebounder and defender. Precious Achiuwa and Jericho Sims are nice backup bigs. And Miles McBride had a pretty good playoff appearance last season. The Knicks are a very good basketball team. They have a very well constructed roster. They have pretty much everything they need to win big this year.

And finally, at number 1 I have the Boston Celtics. I don't think this is a surprise to anyone. They're the best team in the league and they return pretty much everyone. Jayson Tatum is one of the most underappreciated stars in the league. He is a willing and good defender. He is an excellent scorer. His passing has gone up a level. Tatum does it all. He needs the proper credit. Jaylen Brown was amazing in the playoffs and he seems to play with a chip on his shoulder. He has gotten so much better every year. That should terrify opposing teams. Al Horford has fit in nicely as the calm vet on the team. He also has become a pretty damn good 3 point shooter over the past couple seasons. Kristaps Porzingis is hurt, no surprise, but when he is on the floor he helps this team go. I was wrong about his fit. It works. Derrick White is a great shooter and a wonderful defender. He is the ultimate role player. Jrue Holiday is the best perimeter defender in the league, and when his shot is falling, he is lethal. The bench is good enough to keep the team afloat in their limited minutes. The Celtics should be favored to win it all again this season. They have it all and they have it all coming back. They're the best team in the NBA by a wide, wide margin.

That's it, that is my 2024-25 NBA countdown. I hope you all enjoyed it. I cannot wait for the season to tip tomorrow.

Thoughts on the Big KAT Trade

The Knicks and Timberwolves made a pretty massive trade last week. It wasn't fully finalized until yesterday, so I wanted to wait until it was official. The Timberwolves traded Karl Anthony-Towns to the Knicks for Julius Randle, Donte DiVencenzo and a first round pick. The Hornets also got involved, getting a few second round picks from the Knicks. Let’s discuss.

Trades like this do not happen all that often, especially right before the season starts. I have been ranking my teams for my upcoming NBA preview, but I have to reconsider some things now because this trade shakes it up a bit. Karl Anthony-Towns was destined to be moved. It has been in the works for a bit now it seems. The Timberwolves weren't going to be able to keep all the players they had and expect everyone to be paid a fair price. It wasn't financially sound. But, trading him one season after making a run to the Western Conference Finals seems, at least to me, a bit rash and quick. I know KAT had his issues in the playoffs. He fouls too much. His shot comes and goes. He dips in and out of games. But, he had a rhythm with Anthony Edwards, who by all accounts is very bummed about this trade. He had seemed to figure out a way to play with Rudy Gobert. His defense went up a level playing with such a good rim protector. His three point shot was a weapon for the Timberwolves. He guarded Nikola Jokic better than anyone else in the league. But I guess the front office of the Timberwolves felt the time had come and that the Knicks were offering the best package.

The Timberwolves replace KAT with Randle and DiVincenzo. This does make the T'Wolves deeper. It also adds a very explosive offensive player in Randle, when he is healthy. He is also in the last year of his contract, so maybe they have more plans to trade him for someone else. DiVincenzo came on very strong during last season, is a solid shooter and shot creator and he has a wonderful contract. Adding these two guys to the roster helps their bench immensely. Mike Conley, Edwards, Jaden McDaniels, Randle, for the time being, and Gobert make up the starting five. That means they have DiVencenzo, Rob DillinghamNaz Reid and PJ Dozier, among others they can count on for a second unit. This gives Edwards even more of a runway to be the offensive leader, McDaniels showed some nice flashes on offense last season and DiVencenzo is going to feast on second unit defenses.

Trading KAT almost felt like a necessity, but it is still wild that they did it this offseason. The Knicks got a big man shooter, who has played for Thibodeau before, and he will fit in nicely with this squad. It might bum Jalen Brunson out a bit that one of his Villanova guys is gone, but that isn't as big a deal as it seems at first glance. The Knicks have an identity now. They had an issue at center, due to Isaiah Hartenstein going to the Thunder and Mitchell Robinson always being hurt. They addressed that, and then some, acquiring KAT. KAT is added to a starting five of Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby. That is a really, really good starting five, when they are all healthy. That will be a real fear here. Brunson has thumb stuff. Anunoby has never played a full season. KAT has leg and ankle stuff all the time. But, if they can stay relatively healthy, the Knicks can be a real threat to the Celtics. Their bench, if Thibodeau would ever give extensive bench minutes, is very good as well. Deuce McBride proved himself last season. Precious Achiuwa is a big body backup five. Jericho Sims showed flashes last year. Landry Shamet and Cam Payne are solid veteran backup guards. They have some decent youth. The Knicks have a nice group of players that make sense on paper.

Pulling away and looking at this trade for both teams, I think it works for both the Knicks and Timberwolves. The Timberwolves added depth and shooting. They also have the flexibility to make more moves that could benefit them. And they still have Anthony Edwards, who is an incredible player. The Knicks solved their center issue, they have a big that can truly stretch the floor and KAT makes sense with this roster. Both teams are going to be playoff teams and both teams can make a real run. This is the rare trade that actually makes sense that includes big name players. I'm excited to see these dudes on their new teams as well. What a wild, but, on paper, successful trade.

Ty Ranks the 2023 - 2024 NBA Teams - Watching a Pretty Good Cover Band Division

Day four of my preseason NBA countdown continues with five teams that I feel have real, legitimate playoff spots. They should avoid the play in and be in the top six in their respective conference.

At 15 I have the Minnesota Timberwolves. I was very high on them last season but they kind of fell on their face. They never really got it together all season, but they did make the play in and they played the Nuggets kind of tough in round one. This team has massive talent, but I want to see how it comes together, if it does at all, this season. Anthony Edwards is awesome. He is one of my new favorite players in the league. He has major confidence, he had a wonderful summer and he has gotten better every year. Karl Anthony Towns is a great shooter, but he is kind of soft everywhere else. He also missed a ton of time last season. I'll be curious to see if he sticks with the team all season, but while they have him he needs to let it fly. Rudy Gobert is not close to the player he was in Utah. He never fully melded with the team last season and he had a tough summer. I think he may struggle even more. I like Naz Reid as a backup five. He needs more playing time, and if he were to get more, he could do some nice things. Mike Conley is a good point guard, and he has camaraderie with Gobert, but he is older. I like that they got Nickiel Alexander Walker on a good contract. I think he can help this team. Shake Milton was a decent addition as well. The Timberwolves should be a very good regular season team that parlays that into a top six spot in the West. We will see.

At 14 I have the Atlanta Hawks. This team is a mystery. They have loads of talent, but they had an even tougher time playing together than the T'Wolves last season. Trae Young is a great scorer and passer. He is also a complainer. He seems to rub teammates the wrong way far too often. Dejounte Murray is lethal, but he seems to be not as good as he was when he was in San Antonio. He is still an awesome defender. Clint Capela is a great pick and roll guy, as long as Young is a willing passer and Capela stays on the floor. De'Andre Hunter is an okay player, but his skills from college haven't translated to the NBA yet. I like that they went out and got Saddiq Bey last year. He is a good, tough addition to this team. Onyeka Okongwu needs to play to show he is a good five in the league. I think Kobe Bufkin was a very good, smart pick for this team. Jalen Johnson has some solid skills, he just doesn't see the floor enough. This team is highly talented, but they have chemistry issues. They should win enough to get in the playoffs, but it may look ugly at times.

At 13 I have the New York Knicks. This is a very solidly built team with very solid NBA players. They don't have any super duper stars, but they have good team players. Jalen Brunson proved his worth tenfold last season. He is a very good point guard with ice in his veins. He's awesome. Julius Randle is a very good regular season player. He can score a ton. Josh Hart does all the little things really well. He is also a fan favorite. RJ Barrett may be the player he will always be already, and that is fine. He is a solid 16 ppg game guy. No more, no less. Immanuel Quickly had an up and down year, but the dude can score. Mitchell Robinson is a very good defender and rebounder. He is a menace too. They have high hopes for Quentin Grimes. And they went out and got Donte DiVincenzo on a good deal. He can really let it fly. The Knicks are built for regular season wins. They can also give a few teams a run for their money in the East.

At 12 I have the Miami Heat. Remember how they made the finals as an 8 seed last season? That was nuts. It shouldn't have been that surprising though. Jimmy Butler is one of the best, and most underrated superstars in the NBA. He is a killer and a winner. Tyler Herro is a good shooter and shot creator. Duncan Robinson is a knock down 3 point shooter. Neither plays a lick of defense. Kyle Lowry is a great veteran leader, but he is older. He was so good in the playoffs last season. Caleb Martin really showed out last season in the playoffs last season. Bam Adebayo is one of the best modern centers in the league. He is a tank as well. Kevin Love is still here and he is still a great outlet passer and rebounder. Josh Richardson might find his form being back with his original team. And the people I listen to are very high on Jaime Jacquez Jr and Nikola Jovic. The Heat are about as solid as they get in the NBA. They aren't going anywhere.

The final team for the day, at 11 I have the Cleveland Cavaliers. Donovan Mitchell is a legit scorer. He can shoot from every level. He is almost impossible to guard. He just needs to do that in the playoffs. Evan Mobley is a great young player. He has shown strides both years in the league and I think being humbled by Mitchell Robinson in the playoffs last season will be highly beneficial for him. Jarrett Allen is a great old fashioned center. He is tough to guard and is willing to take on anyone. Darius Garland is so good. I was so wrong about him and I am happy about that. Garland is one of the better up and coming guards. Caris Levert provides scoring from the perimeter. I like that they went out and signed Georges Niang for bench scoring, Ty Jerome as a solid backup point guard and Max Strus as a three and d guy. I am also a big fan of the Emoni Bates draft pick. He will do some nice things off their deep bench this year. The Cavs are a fun team to watch.

That is it for today. Come back tomorrow for the next five teams.

Ty's 2022 - 2023 NBA Season Preview: Wizards, Trailblazers, Knicks

Welcome to day four of my 22-23 NBA countdown. We are at the teams who could, and should, be, at the very least, in the play in tournament.

At number 21 I have the Washington Wizards. Bradley Beal got paid this offseason. He, and the franchise for that matter, may end up regretting it in the long run. But he got his money and it should be all good for this season at the very least. He also happens to be an incredible scorer. He has declined a bit, let's hope it is not a trend, but he can still fill it up. I have been over Kristaps Porzingis for about five years now. Sure he is tall and can shoot, but he is not a good defender and he is soft as tissue paper. I like Kyle Kuzma. He has grown on me. He is also a good player on both ends of the floor. He seems to have found a nice spot for himself as well. Rui Hachimura needs to have a good season. He has either been hurt or underperformed since he has been in the league. He has to prove it this season. Deni Avdija has been okay, but he has not played like the lottery pick many thought he could. He is solid, but not great. Will Barton and Monte Morris are both decent enough NBA players. I don't think they are starters, but they are okay. Taj Gibson is a solid veteran presence. And Delon Wright is serviceable. The Wizards should be an above average team. They should win 42 or more games. They should be in the play in. But they need to stay healthy and play better defense. They also need some dudes to step up as well. We will see.

At number 20 I have the Portland Trailblazers. The Trailblazers are whole again. Damian Lillard is back. He is healthy. He has something to prove. The team is fully, FULLY his. They traded CJ McCollum and traded and signed some dudes that fit his playing style. Lillard is sticking around and he has never been the type to shy away from the spotlight. I expect him to have a big season. One of the guys they traded for is Jerami Grant. Grant is good. He may be a bit overrated now, but he is such a plugable player. He is going to fit very smoothly with Lillard. I love this move. They drafted Shaedon Sharpe. They love this kid. He didn't play a second of college ball, but he was a big time recruit and was a lottery pick. If he suits up and plays he could do some nice things for this team. They went out and gave Gary Payton II a big payday. He is going to bring defense and toughness to this squad. Anfernee Simons got a big payday as well, and he has improved every year he has been in the league. Josh Hart is just an overall solid player and dude. I like him a lot. Jusuf Nurkic brings size and strength to the front court. Nassir Little keeps getting better. The Trailblazers have dudes and scorers, they just have to play better on the defensive end and not get hurt so much.

The final team for the day, at 19 I have the New York Knicks. This is RD's squad. I had high hopes for them last season and boy oh boy did they not live up to it. Julius Randle fell off a cliff. I think he will be better, but he was a shell of himself. RJ Barrett got paid, and he keeps getting better. He is not the all star some thought, but he is honing his game well. I love the fact that they went out and got Jalen Brunson. They have a true point guard now. He is good. He is tough. And he can play. Derrick Rose looks pretty damn good this offseason. He seems to finally be 100 percent again. He is a nice bench player. They signed Isaiah Hartenstein, and he will be a nice role player off the bench. Obi Toppin looks incredible so far this preseason. He just needs real minutes. Cam Reddish will probably be traded soon. Mitchell Robinson is what he is at this point. I'm over trying to make this dude as good as he could be. They refused to trade Quentin Grimes. I want to see why this season. Evan Fournier is somehow still here and still starting. Immanuel Quickley is solid. This team has a nice mix of players, they just need to find a way to gel. I would also like to see Toppin and Quickley get more minutes. We will see.

That is it for today. Come back for the next three teams tomorrow.

Thoughts on Donovan Mitchell and the Knicks

I have been reading since yesterday that the Knicks are putting together a potential trade package for Donovan Mitchell.

At first I got pumped. I am not a Knicks fan, but RD is, and the NBA is better when the Knicks are relevant. Even when they are not contenders, when the Knicks are in the playoff picture the league is in a good spot. Just look at two years ago when they made the playoffs as a 4 seed. Sure the Hawks beat them fairly easily, but the Garden was packed, the pre game shows were more lively and it felt like the good old days. The Knicks relevancy makes the game better, plain and simple. I do not think anyone can argue with me on this one. So this Donovan Mitchell news should be good news. It should have their fans riled up. They should be putting together a strong package to trade for him. This will make them an immediate playoff contender, especially in the East.

Since I am staying in and resting up to be 100% for my trip I have had time to really dive into if the Knicks can, and will, pull this off. Every year we have heard about the Knicks getting a big name in free agency or in a trade. The first time KD was a free agent he was going to go to the Knicks. He didn't even take a meeting with them. When Giannis was a potential free agent he was definitely going to meet with New York. He decided to take zero meetings and he re-signed with the Bucks. When Chris Paul was on the market he was going to be their veteran star that helped the younger generation. He signed with Phoenix instead. I went on the pod, and on the site, and said I thought that Damian Lillard was a near lock to join the Knicks. Welp, he just signed a two year extension, which means he has 5 years on his deal now, to remain in Portland. Every big name has gone elsewhere or stayed with their original team. I think Carmelo Anthony was the last real super star they signed, and he only gave them a few good seasons. All of this has made me hesitant about the whole Donovan Mitchell thing. It would be great if they were able to swing a package, keep the majority of the team intact and become a solid playoff team.

Looking at the East, if the Knicks are able to add Mitchell, they would have a shot to be a top 6 seed immediately. The only teams I can think of off the top of my head that would be ahead of them at the moment are the Bucks, Celtics, 76ers and Heat. If the Knicks were to keep their core and add Mitchell, I think that makes them instantly better than the Bulls, Raptors, Nets, Hawks and Cavs, all were playoff or play in teams last season. But here is the hard part. Here is where it gets difficult for the Knicks to pull this off. It is the whole keeping the core together thing I keep mentioning. The Knicks could trade the most draft assets, and that is what the Jazz want right now. That is where the deal starts.

We need to ask why would the Knicks give up their future to be, at best, a 3 or 4 seed in the East? Mitchell makes them an immediate playoff team, as I keep saying, but they are not a title contender just by adding Mitchell to the starting five. This is not like AD going to the Lakers. They were one piece away. The Knicks are not. And the Knicks would have to give up a hefty amount of those picks. I just don't like mortgaging the future of your franchise unless a title appearance is all but a guarantee, and unfortunately for Knicks fans, Mitchell doesn't vault them to title contention. Then you have this core group of guys. There is Julius Randle, RJ Barrett, Mitchell Robinson, Immaunel Quickley, Obi Toppin and Derrick Rose. They also just gave Jalen Brunson a big free agent deal. They seem to have a group that kind of, sort of, fits on paper. Adding Mitchell, if the Jazz decide they want more than picks, will mean breaking apart that group. If I were the Jazz I'd ask for some of the picks and RJ Barrett. Or even Quickley. Maybe have them package Quickley and Toppin. Or put RJ Barrett and Mitchell Robinson in the deal. I don't know what the Jazz want, or how deep of a rebuild they are going to go through, but they are in the catbird seat. They have the power in these negotiations. Just like the Nets are doing with Kyrie and KD, I'd ask for more than I think I could get. And if the Jazz walk away, fine. The Knicks can save and go after yet another big name free agent next offseason.

I fully understand that the Knicks took a step back last season, and their fans want to be in title contention, but Donovan Mitchell, who is a great, great basketball player, one that I truly enjoy watching play the game, does not make them a title favorite. He makes them a playoff team, but not even a top 3 seed. I don't think I'd mortgage the future of the franchise if I were them. Also, this just seems like another big name for the Knicks that they won't get in the long run. Time will tell, but I am not holding my breath.

Ty's 2021-2022 NBA Preview: Pelicans, Grizzlies, Bulls, Knicks

basketball.jpeg

After a two day hiatus I am back with my 2021 NBA countdown. We are at the playoff teams. These teams are the 18 best coming into the season in my opinion. Some will be play in teams, as the NBA has fully committed to doing the play in which I love, but these teams are the playoff bound ones. They should get to the postseason barring significant injuries.

At number 18 I have the New Orleans Pelicans. This team has as much upside as almost any team in the league. If they can get their act together, learn how to play a little defense and stay relatively healthy, they are going to be a matchup nightmare. Zion Williamson has all the tools to be great. He dunks like Kemp, is built like LeBron, can handle the ball like a guard and is a very good passer. He is also nearly impossible to jump with. He can do it all. But he has not been able to stay healthy, and whining before even making the playoffs is a bad look. This kid can be an all time great, he just has to go out there and prove it without a shadow of a doubt. Brandon Ingram is one of the most versatile scorers in the league. He is long, can shoot, can cut and can knock down a shot from anywhere. He does not play a lick of defense though, and I wish he were a better rebounder. He needs to get tougher too. Josh Hart may be the soul of this team. He is their best defender, best rebounder and most reliable player. He is a guard though, so I kind of wish he wasn't their top rebounder. Kira Lewis Jr has some potential, he just needs to get some playing time. Nickeil Alexander Walker looked like he was going to be a great bench scorer a few seasons back, but that hasn't come to fruition. Jaxson Hayes is built like a bruiser, but he too has yet to show his full potential, and he isn't getting adequate playing time. I wish they had kept Lonzo Ball. Devonte Graham is an okay scorer, but this team will miss Ball's passing and defense. Graham doesn't do much of those things. Garrett Temple and Tomas Satorranksy bring shooting, but nothing else. And they replaced Steven Adams with Jonas Valanciunas. Valanciunas may be a better offensive player, but other than that he is an exact replica of Adams. The Pelicans have the talent to become a perennial playoff team, they just have to do it on the floor and play some defense.

At number 17 I have the Memphis Grizzlies. The Grizzlies made the playoffs last year. They beat the Spurs and the Warriors, in Golden State, to make it as the 8th seed. They even took a game from the Jazz in round one. That was a nice start for this very young team. Now they need to take that next step. Ja Morant is a star. He will be an all star. He will be an all NBA player. His shot looks better. His floater is untouchable. He is an out of this world dunker. He is becoming the leader they hoped he would when they took him in the draft. I love this kid. He is my favorite player in the league. Dillon Brooks adds great shooting and plays incredible defense. He is going to be all defense this season. When healthy, Jaren Jackson Jr is a great modern big. He's a tough rebounder and defender. He can post you up and shoot the three. He has the tools, he just has to be on the floor. Kyle Anderson is an understated yet solid basketball player. He does all the little things he is asked. Steven Adams will not do much for them on offense, but he brings a strength and nastiness to this defense that I like. Desmond Bane way over shot his expectations for me, and he looked amazing in summer league. Jarrett Culver is getting his second chance here, and if nothing else, he can be a hound on defense. They will be able to bring along Zaire Williams very slowly, but I do already like how athletic he is. Brandon Clarke, with some more minutes, can easily have a good bounce back year. He was down, but he is too good not to break out of it. He could be their Matisse Thybulle, but with a better shot. Xavier Tillman hit some big time shots in crunch time games last year. He was more than ready for the NBA. And DeAnthony Melton can flat out put the ball in the hoop. Memphis is on the come up. They have the guys. They took a big step last year and now I expect, being a fan, that they are a perennial playoff team.

At number 16 I have the Chicago Bulls. Talk about an off season. They signed Lonzo Ball. He will add defense, passing, court vision and a reliable three point shot. They also got DeMar DeRozan. Say what you will about him, but there is a reason he is still around and still putting up eighteen a game. They already have Zach Lavine, who was an all star last year, was great on Team USA this summer and has the looks of a guy that just wants to win. They got Nikola Vucevic last season and didn't have the time to fully integrate him in the offense. Now he has a full off season under his belt and he should shine. Alex Caruso was a sneaky good signing. He brings great defense and hustle to this team. I know Patrick Williams is hurt now, but when he gets back, I feel like he is going to take a humongous leap. Coby White is going to be a lethal bench scorer for this team, and this role is so much better for him. Ayo Dosunmu was a very good draft pick and he is playing for his hometown team. Derrick Jones Jr will be a highlight reel mainstay and a big time fan favorite. The Bulls want to be in the playoffs and this off season made that very clear. They should be a very good team.

The final team for the day, at number 15 I have RD's New York Knicks. They were in the playoffs last season. They had home court advantage. Julius Randle was the MOP, an all star and an all NBA guy. Derrick Rose is back and looks like the best version of his veteran self. They signed Kemba Walker. I know he hasn't been that good as of late, but playing in the Garden, where he shined in college, that has to add something to his game. They overpaid for Evan Fournier, but the dude knows how to score in the NBA. He will inject some life into the second unit. RJ Barrett has quietly gotten better every year. And now that his jumper looks good, he could vault into a solid starter and twenty point per game kind of guy. Immanuel Quickley was a revelation. He is so much fun to watch and he has no conscience when shooting the ball. Mitchell Robinson is fully healthy and in a contract year. He will return to form. Obi Toppin is going to get more playing time and he will grow into a solid player. Nerlens Noel is still a good rim protector and rebounder. Taj Gibson is the vet every team wants. And Alec Burks can put up forty on any given night. The Knicks surprised a lot of us last year. They return pretty much everyone from a team that was the four seed last year. This team is here to stay and it feels good to have a good Knicks team in the NBA.

That is it for today. Come back tomorrow for the next four teams.

The Knicks are Not Actually Bad Right Now

basketball BW.jpg

RD may not want to hear this, hell a lot of resident New Yorkers might not want to hear this, but the Knicks look like a solid team. They are currently on a six game win streak, they are fifth in the East, Julius Randle is finally living up to the hype and they are playing really solid basketball at the exact right time.

I agree with LeBron when he said the NBA is better when the Knicks are good. It makes sense. I am not a Lakers, Celtics or Knicks fan, but when they are all good teams, playoff teams, the NBA is better. Those are some of the biggest market teams, and if Chicago would get their act together, this could be like the NBA of the 90's, which is the NBA I watched and fell in love with.

Now, not to temper things down for Knicks fans that are excited, they are currently fifth in the East, and they would get destroyed by the 76ers, Bucks or Celtics. Hell, I'd even take the Heat or Raptors, teams far behind them, to win a seven game series over them. The Knicks are a nice story. That is what this whole season will be for them. But they are not ready to compete with the upper echelon of the East. If you all will remember, Tom Thibodeau went to Minnesota a few years back and turned them into a playoff team in year two. Then they totally went down the drain and he was gone well before his contract was done. He was not only the coach in Minnesota, but also the GM. He made all the player personnel decisions. He chose who they drafted, who they traded for and who they signed as free agents. He signed all the guys he likes and only played them, with few exceptions, and the Timberwolves fell back into obscurity.

What the Knicks have going for them is Thibodeau is just the head coach. He excels in the regular season as just the head coach. He won in Minnesota for a few years, and he had some really good teams in Chicago. But he overworks his players and he is sometimes unwilling to play younger players. So far that has not been the case in New York. Julius Randle is a vet, but this is his first real time being "the guy" for an offense, and Thibodeau has made it work. He is being forced to play RJ Barrett, and he is looking more and more like the player some GM's and scouts envisioned when he left Duke after one year. He is hitting shots and getting to the rim. Obi Toppin isn't getting a ton of playing time, but when he gets in, he is a good defender and good rebounder. Immanuel Quickley was kind of forced into the lineup, but he has been a revelation. He has more than earned his spot in the rotation. Derrick Rose is becoming the super sub for them. That is a perfect role for where he is in his career right now, and he is doing great. I think with the roster construct before he got there, he doesn't have a choice but to play the young kids, and it is working.

We will see what happens from here, how they finish out the year. But right now, Thibodeau has no other choice but to roll the best players out there, and a lot of them are younger guys. The Knicks are going to make the playoffs this season. Where we sit right now they are 32-27, firmly in the fifth spot in the East. They only have 13 more games left in the regular season, I think they will hold on to that 5 seed, meaning they will not have to play in the play in tourney, and I wouldn't be surprised if they win a round. As it stands today they would face the Hawks in the first round. I could see them winning that series in six games. But then they would get one of the buzzsaw teams. One of the three teams at the top that will destroy them. But, as if right now, the Knicks should be proud of what they have done this year. I had no faith in them, and I know a ton of other writers were right there with me. They have proved all of us wrong, and I have loved seeing Julius Randle, who I am a big fan of, turn into this force, especially on the offensive end.

This has been a nice season so far for New York, and they could make it more fun by winning in the playoffs.

Ty's 2020-2021 NBA Preview: The Worst of the Worst

basketball BW.jpg

As wild as it seems, the next NBA season starts in 15 days. We are two weeks away from the season.

This is wild to me, but I am stoked. I love the NBA, I loved the bubble, I am stoked to see some of the rookies that were drafted, want to see some of the guys that switched teams and am just happy that pro basketball is back. They proved they can do a season during this pandemic, and while I am sure they will run into some problems, I do not envision the NBA having the same issues as the NFL or MLB or college sports. The people in charge know what they are doing, and they have already laid out a 158 page rule book for the upcoming season. The pandemic is still raging, with no signs of slowing down any time soon, but I think the NBA can pull this off again. I am also a big fan of the 72 game sprint, with no all star game or any other distraction.

With all this being said, I am going to do my traditional NBA season countdown of teams, from worst to best. I love doing this. I will do five teams a day, explain why I have them where I do and after I am done counting all the teams down, I will do predictions, including awards, possible stoppages and my finals pick. Let's get to it.

Coming in at 30, the bottom of the barrel, I have the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs just don't seem to really have a plan right now. They have talent, but it is young and they have too many similar players. They also totally whiffed on the John Beilein hire. I do think JB Bickerstaff is a solid head coach, but he doesn't have much to work with. Collin Sexton and Darius Garland are good, but not that good. They aren't guys to build around. I am a big Sexton fan, but he is very inconsistent. Garland looked like a guy that barely played in college last season. Kevin Love clearly wants out, and he is older. Larry Nance Jr is hyper athletic, but he isn't really anymore than a dunker. Andre Drummond is in purgatory there, and I think he wants out. Isaac Okoro is an okay pick, but he doesn't move the needle for me yet. And the rest of the roster has older vets that haven’t done much. Guys like Matthew Dellavedova, Javale McGee, Thon Maker and Dante Exum fill out the roster. Sure, a couple of them have rings, but it has nothing to do with them. The Cavs will be a lottery team yet again.

At number 29 I have the Detroit Pistons. I mean, I trashed the Cavs roster for having older vets, but the Pistons make that look tame. Derrick Rose is the point guard. He is good, and has improved, but I have to imagine he will be gone soon. Blake Griffin is the 4, but he has lost his explosiveness, and he is now a guy teams don't want to trade for. Jahlil Okafor just signed there, but he has never figured out the NBA. He should have played in a different era. Josh Jackson, who I absolutely loved when he was in his draft, has been a total bust. And this has to be something like the tenth team Trevor Ariza has played on. The Pistons have some youth, but it isn't team building youth. Sekou Dembouya has some skills, but he barely sees the floor. Svi Mykhaliuik has already been traded three times, and he has been in the league for 3 years. I like the Saadiq Bey pick, but he may not get enough playing time to flourish. And poor Zhaire Smith can't seem to catch a break. The Pistons may be the least desirable team in the NBA right now. They are better than Cleveland because Derrick Rose proved he is on his way back, but just barely better.

At number 28 I have the OKC Thunder. I know they were a playoff team, and they pushed the Rockets to seven games last season, but they offloaded two of their best guys. I understand why, but still, losing Chris Paul and Steven Adams is going to take a toll. I love love love Shai Gilgeous Alexander, and he has gotten better each of his two seasons. Now we will have to see how he does as the main guy every night. He is going to have the keys to run this offense. Lugentz Dort was a revelation in the bubble as a defensive force. But he is not a great shooter, and he will have to guard the other team's best guy every night. That takes a toll. Andre Roberson came back last year, in the bubble in fact, but he looked like a shell of himself. Hamidou Diallo is a freak athlete, but that is it. He isn't much of a shooter or defender. Darius Bazley can hit threes, but he will be a starter on this team. And while it is nice to have Danny Green and George Hill, they aren't Chris Paul and Steven Adams. The Thunder are going to take a major step back. But, they have SGA and a gang of draft picks. They won't be down for very long.

At number 27 I have the New York Knicks. Now, I usually pick on the Knicks with just cause. But, I actually like the direction they could be headed in. I am not a fan of the Tom Thibodeau hiring. But maybe it will be better since he is just the coach. He is not the GM like he was in Minnesota. I also love the pick of Obi Toppin. I think pairing him with Mitchell Robinson is going to make their front court a very formidable one, especially if Toppin can play semi serviceable defense. Robinson can take care of the rest. But after that, this is where they fall off for me. RJ Barrett proved he could score, but he takes far too many shots, is inconsistent and not a willing passer yet. Kevin Knox is not nearly as good as I thought he would be. He is actually, according to statisticians, one of the worst players in the league. Frank Ntilikina is a solid defender, but he is a mess on offense. Dennis Smith Jr, another player I really rooted for as a rookie, has never really found his place in the league. Julius Randle is a good scorer, but nothing more. Signing Austin Rivers and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was so ho hum I actually forgot they were on the team until I did some research. The Knicks are a ways away from being relevant again. But, if Toppin and Robinson find a way to coexist and share the court, they could be a duo that older stars might want to come play with. The Knicks have two guys that they can build off of. The only question, or questions, will it work, and will they be willing to wait? Time will tell.

My final team for the day, at number 26, I have the Chicago Bulls. I saw some rankings that had them as high as the late teens, and people are praising the Billy Donovan hire, which I agree is a solid hire, but this roster leaves a TON to be desired. I really like Coby White, and I think he has the tools to be an all star. He just needs to have a coach that will let him play through mistakes. After him though, I am not sold, at all, on this roster. Zach Lavine is their "guy", but he is so average to me. He is an excellent leaper, and his jumper has gotten way better, but he shows no effort on defense, and he is clearly not a player to build a roster around. Lauri Markanen had a solid rookie year, then got hurt and really struggled last year. I feel like last year is more indicative of the type of player he will be. Wendell Carter Jr never got the chance to be himself under Jim Boylen. Maybe Donovan changes that, but Carter has got to get that killer instinct back. I am not a big fan of the Patrick Williams pick. He is very talented, but also very raw. I also do not want to see him take minutes away from Wendell Carter Jr. And in looking at the rest of the roster, it is very blah. At least when Donovan took the Thunder job he had a player of Russell Westbrook's talent. He doesn't have any player near his level, and the vets are total also rans. Otto Porter Jr and Noah Vonleh and Denzel Valentine and Daniel Gafford and Thad Young, those names just don't jump off the page. Billy Donovan has his work cut out for him, and so does Coby White. I think those two will be fine, it is the rest of the roster that worries me, and should worry Bulls fans. They are not a playoff team yet, as some have predicted.

That does it for day one. This rules. Come back tomorrow for the next five teams.

Tom Thibodeau is Not What the Knicks Need

file000409592826.jpg

Awhile back I talked about the New York Knicks and their opening at head coach. I went through the candidates I thought were viable and through my research I thought that Mike Brown was the best fit. He has coached a super duper mega star, he has been to the Finals, he has been to the playoffs and he has helped start a rebuild. Recently he has been the main assistant to Steve Kerr in Golden State. I felt he was owed his next shot at running a team, and I felt he would fit in perfectly with the Knicks.

Well, the Knicks are going to do what the Knicks are going to always do, and they went ahead and hired Tom Thibodeau. The deal was made official yesterday I believe. He is now the head coach of a very young team, younger than when he took over the Timberwolves, without a player of Jimmy Butler's caliber, or KAT's of that matter, who doesn't play much defense and is trying to build around RJ Barrett, who is okay, but I don't even think he is all rookie caliber. The best player the Knicks have is Mitchell Robinson in my opinion, and while he fits the mold of an old fashioned Thibodeau player, he is not going to be the offensive weapon that they need. And while they may try to mold Barrett into that kind of guy, he did not look to have the goods to be a great offensive player in the NBA. Also, Kevin Knox looked lost last season, they waived Alonzo Trier, they won't get a great college guy and the rest of the roster is, well, underwhelming to put it nicely. This should be a full rebuild. But, I just don't think Thibodeau is the guy for that. He wants to win and win now. To his credit, everywhere he has been, he has had teams that are in the playoffs, that make the game gruff and he has always had at least one guy that can score in the crucial moments. In Boston, as an assistant, he had Kevin Garnett to run the defense, and had KG, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce, plus Doc Rivers as the head coach, to run the offense. They won a title. In Chicago he had Joakim Noah to play brutal defense, and a young Derrick Rose, the youngest MVP in the history of the NBA, to run offense. He played those guys way, way too many minutes at a very young age, never got out of the second round of the playoffs and Derrick Rose destroyed his knee. In Minnesota he had Butler, who was the do it all guy on both offense and defense, and he had KAT playing good enough D, and scoring in bunches. That team had to fight to get the 8 seed in the playoffs, and then got their asses blown out and Jimmy Butler pushed his way out. Minnesota wasn't very good after that, and Thibs was let go. He has a decent track record as a head coach, but he cannot build a team, he plays his starters far too many minutes and he burns guys out. He has also had, at the least, one all star caliber player at his disposal everywhere he has been. As I pointed out, the Knicks don't have that yet, and they don't have a lot of the other things teams need to compete, even in the East. And I understand that Thibs and Leon Rose are buddies. I get that they hired World Wide Wes, and he knows people. I understand that, at least at the beginning, Knicks fans will like Thibs because he is old school and will work these kids. But what happens if they go 20-62 next season, and strike out on big time free agents? What happens if Mitchell Robinson pans out, but goes the Butler route and wants out? What happens if RJ Barrett is never more than an inconsistent scorer? What happens if Kevin Knox is fully a bust? The list of questions could go on and on, and you may say that these questions can be asked of other teams, successful teams at that, but this has happened everywhere Thibs has coached. Butler pushed his way to the 76ers. Derrick Rose was played far too much and he has never been the same. Rookies in Minnesota never got any real time to show themselves because Thibs wants to play vets. The Knicks biggest score in free agency in the past decade has been guys like Enes Kanter and Julius Randle. This just seems like a situation where Thibs will get frustrated, the Knicks won't get the meetings they want, the Nets will be more enticing, the guys Thibs will want are either too old, or simply not stars and the Knicks will be right here in two or three years again, looking for a new coach to go through yet another rebuild.

I want the Knicks to be good. Basketball is way more fun when they matter. The Lakers haven't been good for eight years, but this year, as much as I dislike them, has been better because they are a legit title contender. We need that from the team in New York, the team that plays at the most famous arena, the team that pushed the 90's Bulls. I just don't think it will work with Tom Thibodeau as their head coach. I feel like I have been ragging on him since he took the Minnesota job, but hey, that turned out to be one thing I was correct on. And this situation in New York is much, much worse than what he walked into in Minnesota. I wish the Knicks would think like a modern NBA team, but that just doesn't seem to be the way they do business. They need to get with the modern game, and Tom Thibodeau is not the head coach to do that. Oh well, maybe they will prove me wrong, I just don't see it. Not with him as the head coach and the current roster they have.

Who Should Be the Next Head Coach for the New York Knicks?

file000409592826.jpg

Another day another basketball story from me.

Today I want to talk about the New York Knicks and their coaching search. They fired David Fizdale, unfairly I still think, and this team has been in the tank for too long now. The Knicks are a flagship team, and the NBA is better when they are a good team. The last time I can remember them being good was eight years ago, when Carmelo was still good and they won fifty games. They then immediately went out and got washed by the Pacers in the first round of the playoffs. Since then it has been a dumpster fire. They have not been a good team. They have made some odd draft choices, and odd trades. They've made some questionable signings. And they have missed out on some big time free agents they thought they may be getting. And even when they make a good draft choice, Kristaps Porzingis comes to mind, he wants out and they trade him. And Mitchell Robinson is very good, but I am at a point where I think they will trade him when his stock is high. They won't let him stick around long enough to become the all star I think he can be.

The Knicks recent downswing has resulted in them becoming a laughingstock, they need James Dolan to be gone, they need to get a solid draft pick and they need to start making sound free agent choices. I think a lot of that depends on who they hire as their new head coach, and what Leon Rose brings to the team. Rose will get them meetings. He will get guys in the room. He was a super agent. Now the Knicks need to get the right coach.

I've seen so many names connected. It seems like every coach, be it a current head coach, former head coach or upcoming assistant is being mentioned, or have an interview coming up. The last three names I heard recently are Mike Brown, Jason Kidd and Tom Thibodeau. These are the three guys they seem to be honing in on.

I wouldn't hire Tom Thibodeau. I wasn't a fan of his in Chicago. I thought he overworked his best players and I still throw a little blame his way for Derrick Rose's knee exploding in the strike shortened season. He played him far too much. I also wasn't a fan when Minnesota hired him to be the coach and GM. I wrote a whole thing about it. He didn’t do much of anything until the Timberwolves signed Jimmy Butler, and we all saw how that turned out. I am not a Thibodeau guy, and I don't think he has it in him to coach a team that needs to be developed. He needs a team that is laden with vets, and I still would be hesitant to hire him.

Jason Kidd has come on strong as of late because of his relationship to Giannis Antentokoumpo. He coached him in Milwaukee, Giannis likes him and those Bucks teams were solid under Kidd. Unfortunately what I remember most from his tenure there is the water spilling incident to try and save a timeout. Also, it appears that he wears out his welcome quick. Milwaukee let him go after three years and the Nets job, I don't believe he finished one season there. He may also want to stay in LA because LeBron may want him to become the head coach if Frank Vogel screws things up. And, all this talk of Giannis leaving Milwaukee, and teams trying to set up how they will sign him or trade for him, getting the right players to pair him with, I truly believe Giannis wants to stay in Milwaukee. They are always going to be a threat with him, he seems like he likes it there, he started a family there and they can offer him as much money as any other team. He reminds me of a guy that wants to play for just one team his whole career. And if he can bring them a title, man would that make my dad happy.

So we are left with Mike Brown. I actually do think this would be a homerun hire for the Knicks. He has had major success as a head coach. Sure, it was with a young LeBron, but still, he coached a Finals team. He has also been doing wonders as an assistant in Golden State. He has stepped up, stepped in when needed and the players there love and respect him. I know things didn’t go great in Cleveland after LeBron left for Miami, but it hasn’t gone good for anyone else whenever LeBron isn't on that team. They are the Browns of the NBA. Cleveland is a waste land without LeBron. So I don’t knock Mike Brown for that. I also think his time in Golden State has opened him up to the modern NBA, he has helped develop some great players, he has taken the role of head man when Steve Kerr has had to sit out, he has done it all. I also think Knicks fans, and more importantly, players, will adore him. He can coach vets as well as he can develop raw talent. Mitchell Robinson could reach the all star level under him. Maybe Dennis Smith Jr would buy into being more of a distributor than a shooter. Frank Knilitina may be able to work on his jumper and become a poor man's Draymond. They could get a solid draft pick, maybe Tyler Haliburton, that they can turn into a swiss army type guy, because Mike Brown knows how to coach and develop guys like that. I think he is more than deserving of his second chance, and I think the Knicks would be foolish to not give him the job.

We shall see, but I feel that Mike Brown is far and away the best candidate for the vacant head coaching job for the Knicks right now.

Ty's 2019-2020 NBA Preview: Hawks, Pistons, Knicks, Pelicans

Day 3 of my NBA countdown is here. We are almost at my top 18, or which teams I would put in the playoffs if they didn't have to do East and West teams. Also, if any of the 4 teams I have today make the playoffs, it wouldn't shock me at all.

Anyway, coming in at number 22 I have the Atlanta Hawks. I love the way this team is being built, and I love the young talent they have. Trae Young totally changed my view of him with the way he improved all season long. He started slow, but he didn't let that bother him, and by the end of the year, it wasn't a far gone conclusion that Doncic was the runaway rookie of the year. Young made it a real race. He is already a very solid shooter, but the way he passed the ball and his handles, man did he have a real solid year. Now he needs to grow off that. I am a big time fan of John Collins. I like his old school game, he is strong, he can rebound and is a nice dunker. I like the pick of Deandre Hunter. He was a great defender in college, and hopefully that will translate to the pros for him. He also shot the lights out in the NCAA title game, and maybe that was a sign of things to come. They also took a "flyer" on Cam Reddish with the 10th pick. I don't see big things from him, he was a ghost at Duke last year. But, for the 10th overall pick, why not take a shot. If he becomes a sixth man, I feel like that is a win. Vince Carter is back for his 10 millionth season. I know this is his last, and he has been so much fun tot watch. I have nothing but respect for Carter. Kevin Huerter is another lethal shooter right next to Trae Young. Jabari Parker is there, and while he has not been great at much, the dude can score. The Hawks are not ready yet, but neither were the Thunder when they first made the playoffs. I could see that happening with the Hawks, especially in the East. But still, I think 35 wins is best case scenario for them.

At number 21 I have the Detroit Pistons. I just don't really know what they're trying to do. They have a few big names. Blake Griffin is a perennial All Star and a solid player. But, I still feel like he is wildly overrated, he is older, not as athletic and still gets hurt too much. Andre Drummond is a massive, throwback center, and I love watching him play. He plays hard and tough, but he isn't a top of the line center. Also, he needs to stop shooting threes. That is not his game at all. Reggie Jackson is a waste of a roster spot. He has only gotten worse since demanding his way out of OKC. He makes far too much money, and thinks he is better than he truly is. Luke Kennard is a nothing player. He isn't that good of a shooter, he cannot defend and he just takes up space. Derrick Rose is here, and while he played way better last year, he just isn't the guy he used to be. I hope for good things for him, but he seems past his time. They signed Joe Johnson after he won the MVP in the Big 3, but come on, he isn't "Big Shot Joe" anymore. Other than that, it's a cobbled together group of basketball players. What helps them is their coach, Dwayne Casey, who I like, and the fact they play in the East. But still, I do not know what to make of this team.

At number 20 I have the New York Knicks. Now this roster, this is the most cobbled together piece of junk I have seen in some time. This team totally whiffed on any big name free agents this past summer, and then they were left digging for scraps, and scraps they got. Julius Randle is a fine NBA player, but he is not a cornerstone player. You cannot build a title contender, or even a playoff contender, when Randle is your guy, and like I said, I like Randle. They got Marcus Morris to fleece the Spurs and sign with them, but I feel like the Spurs dodged a bullet. They signed Elfrid Payton, and he is the point guard version of Jabari Parker minus the scoring prowess. Bobby Portis is better known for punching a teammate than anything he has done on the court. Taj Gibson is a billion years old. And Wayne Ellington is here for some reason. The young guys are still very unproven. Frank Ntilikina has never gotten a real shot, and they need to trade him so he can try and reinvigorate his career. I love Mitchell Robinson, and I think he is the dude they need to build around. Kevin Knox was dreadful last year, and has not looked good in preseason. Dennis Smith Jr is hyper athletic, but still struggles to shoot the ball. And they took RJ Barrett, who I have zero faith in as a future All Star. The Knicks roster is so weird and seems incompatible. Randle will score in bunches and Mitchell Robison is awesome, but outside of that, I just don't know what to make of this team. I have them higher than I thought I would, but I wouldn't be shocked if they win 25 games this year. Who knows.

My final team for the day, coming in at number 19, is the New Orleans Pelicans. No team, that lost a great, top 5 player, could have had a better offseason than the Pelicans. Yes, they lost Anthony Davis, and while that is a real bummer, they got such a great return. They got Lonzo Ball, who has a much improved shooting form, and can still play D and find the open shooter. They got Josh Hart who is a consummate pro. He does all the little things. They got Brandon Ingram, and he was really starting to come along late last season. He played so much better when LeBron was out, and in New Orleans, I feel like he could shine. And they got the number one overall pick, Zion Williamson. While I want to see more than just dunking from him, he is going to ease the loss of Davis so much smoother. He will get people to come out and watch the Pelicans. They still have Jrue Holiday, who might be the most underrated player in the NBA. He is so good in every phase of the game. They drafted Jaxson Hayes, who is incredibly raw, but incredibly talented. When/if he starts to figure it out, he is going to be a great modern big. I also love the pick of Nickeil Alexander Walker. He was an under the radar choice, and he had an excellent summer league and has looked solid in preseason. They signed Derrick Favors and JJ Redick too. Those guys have been in the playoffs a ton, and they have great veteran experience to help out this young squad. The Pelicans did something great after losing such a star. They rebuilt on the fly, and they did it so much better than anyone could have expected. The one problem, they play in the West, and the West is super duper tough. I could see them winning 42, 43 games and missing out on the playoffs. But my hat is off to New Orleans. They did an excellent job, and they will be a playoff team much sooner than expected.

That is it for today. Come back tomorrow for the next 4 teams. We are in playoff team territory now.

The Knicks Did a Dumb Thing

I was going to write about another new show that totally blew me away, but an enormous trade just recently happened in the NBA, and I am going to use my platform to talk about how blown away I am right now. Hell, I am still kind of processing this trade because I didn't think this team could get any dumber.

Never underestimate the stupidity of the New York Knicks.

By trading Kristaps Porzingis to the Mavericks, the Knicks just got infinitely dumber. I assumed that the "biggest" NBA trade I would write about would have been AD to the Lakers, but that hasn't happened yet, and the Knicks pulled this dumbass stunt this afternoon. I know all the stuff that got leaked late last night and early this morning. Porzingis met with the Knicks brass, told them he was frustrated by the direction of the team and would possibly seek a trade. Well, I guess the Knicks took that quite literally, and they full on traded him this afternoon. I waited awhile too because I didn't want to be fooled. I didn't want something to hold this trade up. I assumed we may have had another Trevor Ariza deal on our hands. But nope, it was all true. The Knicks traded away their main guy, the one that was going to help them lure free agents, the future of this team, the second best unicorn in the league, behind Giannis, for next to peanuts.

Was this real worth it for New York? Sure, the Knicks got Dennis Smith Jr, who I still like, and think could have a career still, and the Mavs also threw in DeAndre Jordan, a dinosaur in the current NBA and Wes Matthews, who has not been near the same since he ravaged his knee.

The fact is that this was colossally stupid for New York.

The Mavs got a much, much better deal in return. I know that Porzingis is himself coming off a torn ACL, and big men sometimes have a hard time coming back from that, but look at Boogie Cousins right now. I feel like that is Porzingis's future, but with a better jump shot. And he is much younger than Boogie. But the Mavs didn't just get Porzingis, they also got Tim Hardaway Jr and Courtney Lee. I wouldn't be shocked if they buy out Lee and let him loose. But Hardaway Jr was a key piece for them. He doesn't play much D, but the dude can score and stretch the floor. even before Porzingis was apparently on the table, I heard that the Mavs were pursuing Hardaway Jr. Now they have him and Porzingis. And they both get to play with Luka Doncic. I mean, the Mavs are clearly going all in. Even if Porzingis doesn't play until next year, I feel like a lineup of Doncic, Hardaway Jr, Dirk and 2 of their young big guys will be a ton of fun to watch, and tough to guard. I don't think they make the playoffs without Porzingis, but I don't think they are bad. And just think of them next year. Doncic and Porzingis running the pick and roll will be deadly. It will also totally open up the three for Hardaway Jr. They won't be at the top of the West, but they will become a perennial playoff team. They will win in the 40's and 50's of games, and be really hard to guard. They will also play stout D. Also, Porzingis will be playing for, by far, the best coach in his career. Rick Carlisle will use him perfectly.

Back to the stupidity of the Knicks. I know Porzingis was mad. I know this has been a tough year. I know they are tanking. But what the hell are you doing? They needed to keep Porzingis if they wanted any big time free agent this offseason. I know they got off a ton of money, and I wouldn't be shocked if both Matthews and Jordan are traded or cut. And Smith may thrive running this offense all on his own. But Smith will not be enough to lure guys like KD or Kyrie or AD. I thought, before about 3pm my time today, that the Knicks had the best shot to sign KD this offseason. But with Porzingis gone, I think that is shot. I am a Dennis Smith Jr fan, and this is meant as zero disrespect to him, but he doesn't move the needle for a guy like KD. Also, he is a young point guard, so why would Kyrie want to join now? Then you have AD. I know he said the Knicks aren't one of his "preferred destinations", but they could have been if they still had Porzingis and the number one pick. All of that is gone because of, it seems to me, an impulse move by the Knicks front office. They are an atrocity to pro basketball right now, and they just got much, much, much worse today.

I don't get it. I want the Knicks to be relevant again because the NBA is so much better when they matter. They took a big, big step in the wrong direction with this trade today. This totally changes a lot of what I thought would happen this offseason. I guess I thought James Dolan couldn't be this stupid. I was proven very wrong. This is a horrible decision for the Knicks, but the Mavs will be much improved. I expected a lot of movement this week and next, with blockbuster names being moved. I just didn't expect, or see this one coming at all.

Wow.

Ed Note: The Knicks are stupid.

The Sad End of Carmelo Anthony's NBA Days

This really looks like the end of Carmelo Anthony. Rumors are swirling that he is going to be cut from the Rockets any day now. He has not been good this year, last year, or really, the past 5 or 6 years. He is too slow on defense. He is not a good three point shooter. He isn't really that good of a mid range shooter. He can't get to the rim. He doesn't like to pass the ball. He needs space to create his shot, and right now, he cannot get that space.

I used to love Carmelo Anthony. I was a big time fan of his when he was in Denver. His game was so fluid and fun. He still wasn't a great three point shooter, or a defender, he's never been a good defender, not even in college, but his offense offset all that. He was lethal from mid range. He could get to the rim, thus get to the free throw line. He still wasn't much of a passer, but when he did, it was nearly pin point. Even when Carmelo pushed his way out of Denver, he was still a very legitimate threat his first couple of years as a Knick. Hell, the last time the Knicks were good was one of his first couple seasons there. They won 50 plus games and made, I believe, the second round of the playoffs.

But then he did an interview with ESPN The Magazine, and it was all about his brand and how much more money he has made since he left Denver for New York. I read this cover story, and what stood out most to me was how little he cared about winning. He talked mostly about himself, or his brand. He talked about how much he was going to get paid very soon. He talked about how he has big plans after basketball. No mention of winning a title, or making deep playoff runs. No mention of being an MVP and surrounding himself with talented players that could have helped him. No mention of the kind of coach he wanted to play for that could put the Knicks, his team, over the top. The story was I, I, I and money, money, money.

That is when it all flipped for me, and I think it flipped for him too. He became a lesser player. He started to get more vocal with teammates. He hated Tim Hardaway Jr after the Knicks drafted him. He basically insisted they trade him, and they did. He didn't like many other teammates he had in New York.

This caused the start of the mess that the Knicks are in now. The Knicks then went out and hired Phil Jackson as the GM, and we all watched that disaster unfold. The start of that disaster, giving Carmelo a max deal. They could not get any other players of clout because they gave all their money to Carmelo. The Knicks started to tumble. They drafted Kristaps Porzingis, and the 2 people who disliked that move most, Phil Jackson and Carmelo Anthony. Jackson called him soft, Carmelo was worried he was losing the team, even though he already lost it a few seasons prior.

The Knicks eventually fired Jackson and got rid of Carmelo. He went to the Thunder last summer, after they stunningly got Paul George, and we all thought this was going to be great. I was fully on board with this at the time. The best Carmelo has been Olympic Carmelo, and I thought that was what the Thunder would get. But, when asked in the offseason if he would be willing to take a bench role, he scoffed and demanded he start. That was the crack for me. I instantly lost all good will I had. He was washed about 5 years ago in my opinion, but he still viewed himself as a star, a first option. Russell Westbrook and Paul George are so much better than he is at basketball, but he didn't see it that way. He struggled mightily last year too. He wasn't that lock down three point shooter. He wasn't hitting mid range shots. He complained that he wasn't getting the ball enough. He was even worse on defense. It was a mess. But, due to George and Westbrook, the Thunder still made the playoffs. Then they crapped the bed. All three of their stars played bad, but Carmelo was the worst. He might as well have not even showed up, that was how unimportant he was in that first round series last year.

The buyout eventually came, as we all expected, and he signed with the Rockets, as we all expected. What made me laugh most was hearing the Rockets fans talk about how they were going to get the best out of him. That was the same thing the Thunder fans said. I was skeptical of this move from the start. They were replacing defensive guys like Trevor Ariza with Carmelo Anthony. Those 2 guys are the same player. In fact, I think, where we stand right now, Trevor Ariza is much, much better, especially on defense. Carmelo has been downright dreadful this year. He is not the player he was expected to be. He is not the shooter that can help the Rockets compete with the Warriors, or Bucks or Raptors or Celtics or even the Trailblazers. He had one good game, against the Nets early in the season, and it shocked me. That is how far he has fallen. What was once expected is now a shock. And after that Nets game, he somehow got worse from the field. Then the stories started to come out that the Rockets were going to "reevaluate" his spot on the team. Then some Rockets players said they were going to start preparing for him to be cut. The GM came out and said they hadn't made a decision yet, but that is a kiss of death. He also didn't play the other night with an "illness".

Carmelo is cashed out. I agree with Tracy McGrady, that he should retire. He is of no use to a contender anymore. Those teams are all set. Also, if he still thinks he is a starter, when or if he gets cut by the Rockets, he is going to have to go to a bottom dweller. He can go to Atlanta or Cleveland or, hell, I don't know any other bottom feeder that would want him. I have heard that the 76ers and Lakers have expressed interest of he is cut. I hope the 76ers don't do that, especially after trading for Jimmy Butler. They don't need those 2 head cases in their locker room. And the Lakers, that would just be hilarious. Yeah, sign Carmelo so guys like Brandon Ingram and Josh Hart and Kyle Kuzma lose valuable playing time so LeBron's buddy can put up pointless shots that he will most likely miss.

I once loved Carmelo's game, but now, it is sad to watch him play basketball. He is not the same guy. The game has passed him by. He is a shell of his former self. I feel bad for him. Let it go.

Ty's 2018-2019 NBA Preview: Knicks, Pistons, Hornets

On to day 3 of my NBA countdown. We are getting ever closer to teams that are better than the lottery, but not quite there yet. Some have star players, but they are often injured. Others have been in the playoffs recently, but they just don't have the goods anymore. Okay, lets get to it.

At number 24 I have the New York Knicks. Look, I am a big time fan of them letting Phil Jackson and Jeff Hornacek go, and I love that they hired a coach like David Fizdale. I was also super, super impressed with Kevin Knox in summer league. But, this team is still a ways away from being a playoff team. I have seen some writers pick them to go to the playoffs, but that talk  needs to ease off. The majority of their success all depends on the health of Kristaps Porzingis. And, while I love the way he plays basketball, he is the second best unicorn behind Giannis Antentokoumpo, he has not been able to stay healthy at all during his short career. If the Knicks want to be a playoff contender, they need Porzingis. Outside of him, I like some of the youth they have. Knox, as I already mentioned, really surprised me in summer league. Maybe he is more Devin Booker and less Nerlens Noel. Maybe not being coached by John Calipari will make him that much better. I really like Frank Nkilitina. He already defends at a high level, he is a pass first point guard, and he is very tall for his position. I think Mitchell Robinson can be one of the steals of the draft. I had him as a first round talent, but he fell to them in the second, and the Knicks need a big guy, and he played pretty well in the offseason. After that, it gets iffy. I am a Tim Hardaway Jr fan, mainly because he went to Michigan. But, he is nothing more than a shooter. That's where it begins and ends. Courtney Lee needs to be let free. He belongs on a contender, not as a third option. Trey Burke, another Michigan guy, has bounced from team to team, and finally played okay after a stint in the G League. But, was that a mirage, or a sign of things to come? I don't know. He has never really put it together for one full season. Ron Baker is somehow a player on this team. They signed Mario Hezonja, but who cares. He is who he is, which is a mediocre NBA player. And Enes Kanter and Noah Vonleh has little skills. Kanter can score, but he does nothing else. He is the big man's Ryan Anderson. And this has to be Vonleh's last shot. He has been a bust. I believe that Fizdale will turn this team around, but it won't happen right away. It is going to take some time, and some better players.

At number 23 I have the Detroit Pistons. I mean, how can a team with Andre Drummond, Blake Griffin and Reggie Jackson not be in the playoffs? Especially in the East? Drummond is a very, very good big man, and he has improved his free throw shooting, but he isn't translating into the modern big I hoped he would. I like Drummond a lot, but the Pistons might need to move on. Blake Griffin is still one of the most overrated players in the NBA. I love that people still think he can be the best player on a contender. He is oft injured, cannot shoot an outside shot, no matter what Bill Simmons says, he's a mediocre rebounder and he doesn't have the athleticism that he once had. Griffin is done being a top 20 player. Reggie Jackson got what he wanted when the Pistons gave him a huge deal, but since then, he has been mediocre at best. He is a below average shooter, a ball stopper and not a very good defender. He is not elite. He is getting paid far too much. Stanley Johnson has one more chance to be the player the Pistons thought when they took him in the lottery. He is good at talking shit, but he hasn't been able to back it up. He should be figuring it out, but he hasn't yet. For some reason this team signed both ZaZa Pachulia and Jose Calderon. I just don't get that at all. Luke Kennard is the new Jimmer Fredette. Henry Ellenson is the new Chris Kaman, except he will never be an All Star. I guess he is more like late career Kaman. Ish Smith is their version of Jamal Crawford, except not as good. They signed Glenn Robinson III, but he is the classic example of a player that should have stayed in school one more year. This is a team of former stars, guys that should be stars nd cast offs. They will not sniff the playoffs. Griffin will get hurt, Drummond won't get the touched he needs, Jackson will think he is the number one option, and every other player is blah.

My final team of the day, at number 22, I have the Charlotte Hornets. I so thought this team was going to be a perennial playoff team 2 years back. I was certain they would not only be a playoff team, but they would be a 4 or 5 seed regularly. But, that didn't happen, and I do not know if they are taking the right steps to get back to the playoffs. Kemba Walker is a star. He is one of my favorite players. He is a great scorer. He plays defense. He plays hard. He is a good dude. He deserves better than this. They signed Tony Parker as his back up, but why? He is washed, and I swore he was going to retire. It is so weird to see him in a uniform that doesn't have Spurs across the chest. Nic Batum is on the back end of his career. He is still a solid all around player, but he gets hurt a lot, and he seems like he cannot play more than 20-25 minutes a night anymore. They drafted Miles Bridges in the lottery, and while I think he is a fine player, he did not make that jump from his freshman to sophomore year in college, and that is worrisome to me. Malik Monk never really went off last year like he did at Kentucky, but he is too good a scorer for me to give up on yet. He should take a leap this year. If he doesn't, that could spell trouble for the Hornets. Michael Kidd Gilchrist is a very good defender, but he is way too injured and cannot shoot from the outside, He hasn't put it together. Jeremy Lamb is toast. He has a sweet stroke, but he cannot get open, cannot get to the basket and isn't very good on defense. Cody Zeller is somehow still in the league, and a starter. That is wild. Frank Kaminsky is very blah. Marvin Williams is still a good athlete, but that's about it. Dwayne Bacon can still be solid, if he goes hard every night. I'm not giving up on him yet. And they now have Bismack Biyombo. He cashed in on one really good playoff round a few years back, but he hasn't done much since. He can rebound with the best of them, but that is all he can do. The Hornets should be better, but they just aren't. Hopefully they find a way to get Walker back to the playoffs, or on a playoff team. That is what he deserves.

That's it for today. Come back next week for some teams that will fight, and be, in the playoffs.

Jimmy Butler Should Stay in Minnesota and See What Happens

So I have a few thoughts about the whole Jimmy Butler situation.

If you don’t know, Butler has asked to be traded away from Minnesota. Apparently he has had enough, after just one season, of the young kids on the team, mainly KAT. First off, I have no problem if he wants to go to a team that has a chance to be competitive right away. It took KD leaving OKC for me to realize this. But, if you want a ring before your career is done, I say, go for it. Players careers are so limited now, get it while you can.

With that being said, I liked the fit of Butler with KAT and Wiggins. I also liked him alongside vets like Taj Gibson and Jeff Teague. He also got to go play for his first coach in the league, Tom Thibodeau. It seemed perfect. And at first, it was. The Timberwolves looked pretty good with their starting five, including Butler. They were rolling. I believe at one point they were at the 3 seed in the West.

Then Butler got hurt.

The Timberwolves stopped playing defense. Then Wiggins struggled. Then KAT started to struggle. Then Thibodeau started to play the vets way, way too many minutes. And then Butler said something about the young guys not having the will and the grind to be high caliber NBA stars. I agreed with him, but I felt like this was something they could have been said in the locker room, not to the media. That’s when the cracks started. I heard and read things saying he wanted out of Minnesota. I heard he was floated during the trade deadline. He then turned down a massive extension. This all shocked me.

And now, here we are today.

Butler gave the Timberwolves one last meeting, in LA, the other day, and this was when he asked to be traded. This was clearly a courtesy move by Butler, because he had no intention of sticking around. Now comes the hard/fun part.

Butler has given the three teams he prefers:

The Nets

Why?

The Knicks

What the hell?

And the Clippers

Please god no.

I don’t get why Jimmy Butler would want to leave the Timberwolves for one of these three teams. I know they have the most money, and can easily resign him next summer, but why the Nets, Knicks or Clippers, I may never know. One guess I have, Kyrie Irving has said he wants to team up with Butler, and he’s expressed interest in playing for the Knicks next year. As far as the Nets, I guess, it would be his team. They would have to build around him. With the Clippers, maybe he’s willing to miss the playoffs for one year until Kawhi Leonard signs there, that’s his preferred team.

But I say, what of all these fall through? What if Kyrie and the Celtics click, make the Finals and he loves playing for Brad Stevens? Also, they need a center, and I’d be salivating I’d I were Kyrie at the prospect of playing with Anthony Davis. I love Kristaps Porzingis, but AD is so much better than him. What if the Nets are permanently stuck in this mediocrity hell they live in now? What if Butler is the only guy they can get, and he ends up being a good stats, but team guy? That would be brutal for his legacy. The Clippers are the Clippers. They’re the quintessential underachieving overrated NBA team. Will Butler change that? Maybe, if they get Kawhi. But then he is the second best guy on a team? Will that be what he wants? Doesn’t a trade request mean you want to be “the guy”? That won’t happen if he goes to LA and they get Kawhi. Also, what if Toronto, somehow some way convince Kawhi to stay? Then Butler is left with a bunch of castoffs. Also, especially with LeBron now a Laker, the Clippers will always be the little brother, no matter the records.

I liked the fit of Butler in Minnesota, but I’m just an outside fan. There could be way more stuff I know nothing about as to why he wants out. But for now, it seems to me, he wants to go from a team that could be a perennial playoff contender to some teams with a ton of questions that won’t be answered until next year. We shall see.

Why Would Any Team Sign Carmelo Anthony?

With pretty much all of the big time free agents signed, and the Kawhi Leonard story getting more and more bizarre and strange everyday, there is still one player available, or soon to be for that matter, that is currently getting some buzz, and I want to give my 2 cents on him as well.

The player I speak of is Carmelo Anthony. While he isn't technically a free agent yet, the reports from everywhere say that the Thunder will let him leave. They will save a ton on the luxury tax and shed a player that just didn't fit right with the team last year. Carmelo Anthony, bless him, still thinks that he is a big time player. He still thinks that he is a number one, or at the very worst, number 2 option on a team. He still thinks his mid range game is formidable. He still thinks that he should be the last guy taking the shot at the end of the game. That is all very cute, but that is all very wrong.

Carmelo Anthony's best days are far, far behind him. He is beginning to look a lot like a has been. While he was never as dominant as Shaq was, the end of his career is beginning to resemble it. Shaq thought he was basically a hired hand going from town to town to bring them a title. After leaving Miami, he went to Phoenix to team up with Steve Nash. That was a disaster. He then went to the Celtics, maybe trying to help them regain some glory. That was worse than Phoenix. He even teamed up with LeBron in his first go round in Cleveland, and that was just plain sad. Shaq may be the greatest center to ever play the game, but the end of his career was horrible. Carmelo Anthony isn't 1/10 the player Shaq was, but, as I said earlier, the similarities are shocking.

Carmelo was a great offensive player while in Denver. He was electric and fun to watch, and he led that team further in the playoffs than they had been in a long, long time. He then forced his way out and demanded a trade to the Knicks, when he could have just signed there as a free agent. But, to his credit, the Knicks were a playoff team in his first couple years, and won 50 games a couple times. He made Madison Square Garden games a must watch for awhile. The Knicks attracted big name players and teams for primetime games on ESPN and TNT his first couple years in New York. Stars always play out when they come to the Garden, but when the Knicks are a good team, they play even better. At first, Carmelo to the Knicks was okay. Then it all fell apart. The sign and trade crippled the Knicks ability to really sign anyone of significance, and they started to truly become an awful basketball team. Carmelo just started to hoist shot after shot after shot after shot. They had no real solid rookies because they never had any real draft picks due to the trade. Oh, and when they did have a "high" pick, late teens, early 20's, they wasted it. Then Phil Jackson came aboard and just destroyed the team he played for in the NBA. He signed Joakim Noah and Derrick Rose to ludicrous contracts. He hired Jeff Hornacek, a coach that likes to play space and pace, and forced him to coach a team with one ball dominant guy. The only decent thing Jackson did was a mistake, he admitted as much, and that was drafting Kristaps Porzingis.

Last offseason, when Carmelo desperately needed a change of scenery, the Thunder traded for him. They figured they would get Olympics Carmelo to be the floor spacer for Paul George and Russell Westbrook. At the time, I loved this move. I figured Carmelo would love it too. But then he scoffed at coming off the bench during a preseason interview. He said he wasn't going to play any different. He was basically saying that he wasn't going to change, it was going to have to be George and Westbrook that would have to change. Well, as we all saw last season, it was a disaster. He was bad. The Thunder were, maybe, the most disappointing in all of the NBA last year. Carmelo looked sluggish. His shooting was awful. He disappeared at times, especially when he felt he wasn't getting enough touches. Oh, and his defense was truly awful, even for him. It just never worked out.

So, I was kind of surprised when he opted in, until I saw that he was opting in for 20 plus million dollars this upcoming season. Then it all made sense. Carmelo is not in the game to win titles, he wants to get paid. And that is fine, and that is his right. But now that he is about to be let go, and free to play anywhere next year, I have had to laugh at his preferred teams to go to. The 2 main teams are the Lakers and Rockets. I would absolutely love to see him sign with either one of these teams because I am not a fan of either one of these teams.

If he were to go to the Rockets, and Chris Paul is angling super hard for him to come there, and his contract is outrageous too by the way, how does he fit in with that team? Yes, he used to be able to shoot, but just look at last season. Also, would he be Ariza's replacement? Ariza actually plays solid defense, and at this point in their careers, Ariza is a better player. Also, would he be happy being the fourth, possibly fifth option in Houston? He wasn't happy being third in OKC. In Houston he would be behind Harden, Paul, Capela, Eric Gordon and maybe even Luc Mbah A Moute. How would that sit with him? How would he act in the locker room and with the media? Oh, and didn't we already see the disaster that was Carmelo playing on a Mike D'Antoni team a few years ago? We did, and it was terrible. This would be a poor signing.

Then we have the Lakers. As far as needing shooters, it makes sense. The Lakers have no shooters whatsoever. They gave LeBron a ton of money, and he deserves every penny. But, he is not a great outside shooter. He doesn't have to be. But, they have signed guys like Rajon Rondo, Lance Stephenson and Javale McGee. None of those guys can shoot the ball. They currently have Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma and Brandon Ingram on their roster. Ingram is the best "shooter" of the bunch, and he hit just above 35 percent from three. So, adding Carmelo would make sense. But, I say again, look at how poor he was last year as a shooter. Also, how would he feel being a fifth or sixth option on this Lakers team? How would he feel having to defer to guys that are a decade younger than he is? I feel like he would hate it. The moment that Luke Walton puts in Kyle Kuzma over Carmelo, we all know he'd lose his god damn mind. I'm sure he wants to team up with LeBron, but would this version of Carmelo be any better than what we saw last year with LeBron and Jeff Green? Hell, I feel like Jeff Green, right now, is a better basketball player than Carmelo. If he were to go to the Lakers, I feel like he would look like an older version of what we saw with Jae Crowder while he was in Cleveland last year. But, the Lakers are the team I want him to go to because I think it would be absolutely hilarious. It would be a total wreck, and I would love every single second of it.

Carmelo Anthony is washed up, and I feel like everyone knows it, except for him. I'm very curious to see where he ends up, but I already know that he will be a non factor wherever he is. Get that money while you still can Carmelo. Hopefully he gets it from a team with no title aspirations though.

The Knicks Make a Surprisingly Smart Move by Hiring Good Coach David Fizdale

There were some other things that I was going to talk about today, but finally, mercifully and thankfully, the New York Knicks made a right, and proper, decision.

The announcement of the hiring of David Fizdale as their new head coach might be the best news Knicks fans have heard since they found out they were going to be able to draft Patrick Ewing. This is a big deal. This is a great hire. This is the exact guy that the Knicks need to make them relevant again. Fizdale is a great NBA coach. He has proved that at every stop. How he got fired in Memphis was a raw deal. He didn't deserve that. He did more with that team than anyone, myself included, thought. He had them deep in a series with a very good Spurs team. He made Zach Randolph better. He got Marc Gasol to fully buy in. Mike Conley became a should be All Star under him. He took marginal players, like Tony Allen, and turned them into quality players. He was also a bench coach for the Heat when they had their big three, and he did wonders with them. He and Spoelstra really figured out how to work with those three guys, and I give Fizdale a ton of the credit. He convinced Dwayne Wade that it was LeBron's team. He got LeBron to be highly efficient. He had Chris Bosh do all the little things that the Heat needed at the time. These guys listened to him because he is a players coach. He makes himself available and works with their strengths.

Now, what the Knicks have in Fizdale is a great coach that can squeeze the best out of his players. Now, they have to get more guys around him. Fizdale will do wonders with Kristaps Porzingis when he returns to full health. Porzingis is already great, but Fizdale will tweak his game ever so slightly, and he will be that much better. Frank Nkilitina will become an even better defender, at which he is already very good, and his offensive game will grow. Nkilitina is also super young, so he has a ton of room to grow. Those are the 2 guys I feel like Fizdale should build around. And, until they get some big name guys, he will squeeze the best out of the players currently on that team. Tim Hardaway Jr will become much more efficient. Fizdale will get him to stop taking so many dumb threes, and he will become a better passer. Trey Burke, who was lighting it up at the end of the year, should thrive under Fizdale. He will never be lottery pick good, but he will become a capable NBA backup, which is his best case scenario. Kyle O'Quinn can become a very poor man's Zach Randolph. He has a similar game, he just isn't as good offensively. That could change. Courtney Lee is going to be a dynamite shooter and defender under Fizdale.

The Knicks will be much better, and have a much better record in Fizdale's first season. I know that may sound crazy, because this team was awful, but they were also in tank mode at the end. They were playing guys that had no right to be on an NBA floor. Fizdale won't go for that, and he will get guys that can play. If you get a starting five out there for him that consists of Porzingis, Ntilikina, Hardaway Jr, O'Quinn and either Burke or Emmaunel Mudiay, I wouldn't be shocked at all if they are fighting for a playoff spot, especially in the East. I'd go so far as to say they could even push for a 6 or 7 seed. I could see Fizdale getting 40 plus wins out of that group.

Then, in year 2 or three, watch out. As I mentioned before, guys, stars, want to play for someone like David Fizdale. He has a very tight bond with LeBron James. Now that Fizdale is in New York, I wouldn't be shocked if they become a possible destination for him. He likely wouldn't join the Knicks, but they are now a factor after hiring Fizdale. Say LeBron chooses to stay or go elsewhere, that doesn't mean the cupboard of stars that would want to play for him would be bare. I wouldn't be surprised if Marc Gasol would go there to reunite with him. I see the Knicks as a spot for Kawhi now. I feel like he'd love to play for Fizdale. I could see a young guy that has all the tools, just needs the coaching, Julius Randle, joining to learn under a great head coach. The possibilities are endless.

I love this hire. I haven't said much good about the Knicks since this website started, because they haven't done much right, but this hiring of Fizdale is an absolute homerun. I can finally, without hesitation say, good job Knicks front office. You finally did something right, and you will reap the benefits much sooner than expected. What a solid move.

Note to all the Podcasting Fanboys, The NBA Season is a Long Way from Being Over

I listen to a ton of podcasts, and most of those podcasts are sports related. I do love comedy podcasts, but other than that, it is either college football or the NFL, NCAA basketball and the NBA. Since the NBA started about 3 weeks ago, I have pretty much exclusively listened to NBA podcasts now. And 3 weeks into this season, these hosts of the podcasts I listen to need to chill the hell out. People are already, only after most teams have played, at most, 11 games, making outrageous claims.

I was listening to the Ringer NBA Show this morning, and one of the co hosts said that he thinks the Knicks will make the playoffs. After 9 god damn games. That is nuts. First off, it is only 9 games. They still have 73 games left to play. They have only won 5 of those 9 games. Yes, Kristaps Porzingis has been great so far, but I say again, it is 9 games. Also, who else do the Knicks have on that roster that can propel them to the playoffs, even in the East? Tim Hardaway Jr? Frank Ntilikina? Jarrett Jack? Enes Kanter? None of those guys, and I like Hardaway Jr and Kanter, are that great. So, no, I do not think the Knicks will push for a playoff spot. They are only 5-4, and I'd be shocked if they win more than 32-35 games this year.

Also, these same guys that are all over the Knicks, they crap all over the Pistons, who are off to a much better start, and more equipped for a playoff run, especially in the East. They say all the things about the Pistons that I say about the Knicks. They say it is just a fast start and that they will level out. They say they don't have any stars. They do not like the coach. They do not like the roster. That is everything I say about the Knicks. But, I like the Pistons much, much more. The Pistons do not have a Porzingis, but they have a pretty decent roster construct. I am a big Andre Drummond fan. He is a classic throwback big, and he is actually making free throws now. I don't like Reggie Jackson, but he is playing some good basketball right now. Avery Bradley has been an exceptional addition to the team. I do think they will be right around .500 when the year ends, but they are so much better than the Knicks, yet they do not get the same love.

Orlando is another team that people are saying can push for the playoffs. What? How? Who do they have? Frank Vogel is a good coach, but this team is not even close to playoff ready. Aaron Gordon is a blast to watch dunk, but isn't he just a poor man's Blake Griffin, without the jump shot? Elfrid Payton has not lived up to the expectations. He has been very subpar as a pro. Johnathan Issac is long and athletic, but he is still a rookie, and we will have to wait and see if his rail thin body can hold up for 82 games. The best thing about the Magic though, Johnathan Simmons. He has been a revelation since signing there this offseason. But he is not enough to make the Magic a playoff team.

These podcast hosts are already trashing the Cavs because of their "slow start". The Cavs are 5-6 right now, and they do look bad on defense. But, they have LeBron, and they will be just fine when it matters. In fact, if you look at the wins they have, they are good wins. Sure, losing to the Pelicans and Hawks isn't great. But, they have wins over the Celtics, Wizards and Bucks, all playoff teams. The Cavs roster is very poorly put together, but they have LeBron, and he is the best player in the game right now. He can turn it on when needed, and I am done being one of the people saying that this is the year that the Cavs take a slide. Hell, they only won 51 games last year and still made the Finals.

Same can be said for the Warriors. The Rockets beat them on opening night, and then they lost 2 more games after that. Since then, I believe they have won every single game that they have played. The Warriors are so god damn good that when they get beat it is jarring, but they will be just fine.

The Thunder are off to a "slow" start, sitting at 4-6. But, I said in my preseason preview that it would take a month or 2 for Carmelo, Paul George and Russell Westbrook to figure out how to play together. They are going to be just fine. In fact, I am pleasantly surprised at how much Russell Westbrook has been passing the ball. George and Carmelo are cold right now, but they will start to make shots, and this team will start to put together stretches of 5 wins in 7 games or 9 wins in 11 games. They are going to be a 50 plus win team by season's end.

The Spurs have started okay, but Kawhi Leonard has yet to see the floor. Same thing for Tony Parker. LaMarcus Aldridge has been playing very well, but he needs Kawhi and Parker. And when those guys come back, the Spurs will 50 plus games again.

I've heard a ton about this rookie class so far on these podcasts too. And while I think this class will go down as one of the greatest, people again need to chill the hell out. Markelle Fultz is hurt. People are already calling him a bust, but he is hurt. Something is wrong with his shoulder. Also, isn't this the way of the 76ers? Don't they always sit their top draft picks for, at least, one year? I think Fultz will be just fine. I believe he is going to be a decent NBA player with a 10 plus year career. Lonzo Ball seems to be on TV every night, and from what I have seen, the dude can pass, but he cannot shoot, dribble or play defense. He also looks very disengaged during games, especially when someone puts pressure on him when he has the ball. He can learn how to dribble and play defense, but that shot is trash. His form is straight garbage. He needs to work on that. He will be a quality player, but he is no franchise savior, and the ESPN's of the world need to stop putting the Lakers on TV all the time. They are not a good team. There are some other rookies that have been playing well so far, but time will tell. Donovan Mitchell seems to be putting it together. Lauri Markannen has completely surprised me with his scoring. DeAron Fox is so fast and such a good distributor. Dennis Smith Jr seems to have a highlight play every night. These guys are good, but lets give it a bit more time before we put these guys in the Hall of Fame, with the exception being Ben Simmons. He has been absolutely amazing. He is as advertised, and if he ever gets a jump shot, he will be great.

My final thought of the first 3 weeks in the NBA, Bill Simmons needs to chill the hell out on the Celtics. Yes, they are 10-2. Yes, Kyrie Irving looks very good. Yes, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum have been very, very good. Yes, Brad Stevens can coach. And yes, they have recovered quite nicely from Gordon Hayward's horrific injury on opening night. But, it is 12 games. They lost their first 2 games, and they have won every game since. But, what decent teams have they beaten? I know for a fact that they struggled a bit with the Lakers last night, before finally pulling away late. But again, it is 12 games. If you look at Bill Simmons Twitter feed, you'd think that they are getting ready to hang a banner already. They have the best record after 12 games, but I scream, IT IS ONLY 12 GAMES! They need to do it all year long before I buy in. This is the first time Jaylen Brown has been a priority player since high school. Jayson Tatum is a rookie who missed a ton of time his lone season in college. I don't trust Aron Baynes as far as I could throw him, and that isn't that far. The Morris twin is fine, but he is losing minutes to younger guys. And Kyrie, while he is distributing now, will he do that in critical games? I don't know. I watched him jack up an awful three in game 3 of the Finals last year, when he could have pushed for a 2 for 1 opportunity, or get the ball to an open shooter. Kyrie wants to be the guy to shoot the ball at the end of the game, for better or worse. Calm down Bill Simmons, and the entire Ringer staff for that matter, pertaining to the Celtics hot start. It is only 3 weeks into the year, and if I were asked who would win a 7 game series right now between Boston and Cleveland, I'd take Cleveland in 5 or 6 games. Just remember, the Lakers started 10-10 last year, and people thought they might push for the playoffs, and I think they won something like 15 games the rest of the year.

So while some of these teams are hot, and some are starting slow, it is an 82 game season, and nothing is decided after 3 weeks. Nothing at all. Chill out everyone, the NBA is a long, long season, and the Warriors will still be the champions at the end of the year.

Ty's 2017-2018 NBA Preview: Lakers, Knicks, Suns

Day 3 of my NBA countdown begins with one of the most overrated teams coming into this season. People are expecting way, way too much from this team just because of who they drafted number 2 overall in the most recent draft. Need I remind fans of this team, they just traded away a point guard that they drafted second overall 2 years ago, so maybe they should temper their expectations.

The team I am talking about is my number 24 team, the Los Angeles Lakers. Now first I have to say, I do like the direction they are headed in. I love the hiring of Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka. These may be the 2 guys that can lure stars back to the Lakers. But, for people expecting a possible playoff push from this team, calm the hell down. This team is way too young and way too inconsistent. People seem to love the pick of Lonzo Ball. As I mentioned before, people also loved the pick of D'Angelo Russell. Now, from what I have seen so far, Ball is a better passer than Russell, but that is it. Ball has one of the most awkward jump shooting forms I have ever seen. That shot is going to get blocked so much by real NBA defenders. He isn't much of a defender himself yet either. People need to calm the hell down on the Lonzo Ball talk. He could be good, but he will have a TON of rough patches. He is a teenager and a rookie after all. He is not the savior that the Lakers faithful are expecting. Brandon Ingram looks like he has put on some weight, but the comparisons to KD need to stop. Just because he is long and can kind of shoot doesn't mean he is going to be KD. There is only one KD. I feel like if he played for any other team, he would be compared to a third or fourth option type player, or even a bench player. But, since he is in a Lakers uniform, he will forever get unfairly compared to KD. Julius Randle comes and goes. One night he looks great, the next, he looks like he doesn't care. He could be really good, but he needs to fully commit. I do think Kyle Kouzma could be good, but again, people need to calm down. He is not the next Steph or Dirk just because he has been filling it up in Summer League and preseason. I want to see him do it against the best of the best before I give him my full attention. Some people think the Kentavious Caldwell Pope signing is a big deal. I see it more as a ho hum deal. He was not that great in Detroit, so why would he all of the sudden be a great shooter for the Lakers? Doesn't add up. I do like Jordan Clarkson. He is a proven scorer and he could be pretty good for awhile. They got Brook Lopez in a trade, and while he is good, he is not a modern day NBA center. Again, I do not get the joy and all the big time talk by acquiring a player like Lopez. Who cares? Same with Andrew Bogut. How long until he gets hurt and misses the whole year. 10 games? Maybe 20? And while Larry Nance Jr is a great dunker, what else does he do, and how much playing time will he get? I can't answer that. People need to chill out on the Lakers. If they do get LeBron next year, then hype them up as much as you want. But with this current roster, I'd be shocked if they win 30 games this year.

At number 23 I have the New York Knicks. The Knicks finally, mercifully, traded Carmelo Anthony. What they got in return is not that big a deal though. Enes Kanter can score, but he is horrendous on defense, and Doug McDermott is worse than mediocre. His game has not translated. They gave Tim Hardaway Jr a ridiculous contract only 2 years after trading him. This deal was bizarre, but this is the same team that signed both Joakim Noah and Derrick Rose last year, so nothing they do should surprise me anymore. I like the French point guard they drafted, Frank Nkilitina, but I have never seen him play, so who knows how he will perform. I do love his cockiness and confidence though. Derrick Rose is gone, but unfortunately, they still have Noah and his outrageous contract. He is done as a player. Michael Beasley has been talking out of his ass this offseason, and he will be lucky if he gets 15 minutes a game on this horrid team. Courtney Lee deserves better than this. He could be a great 3 and D guy for a title contender, but he is in NBA purgatory. At least he will get a ton of minutes. Some people think that Guillermo Hernangomez is going to take a leap. I say, what gives you that impression? He hasn't really shown any flashes yet. Kyle O'Quinn is of no real consequence in the NBA anymore. And the rest of the roster is blah. What the Knicks do have is Kristaps Porzingis. He is one of the most unique players in the game right now. He can score, rebound and rim protect. What he can't do, stay healthy. He has gotten hurt every year he has been in the league. Also, I'll be interested to see how he handles being the top guy for an NBA team. Very interested. For the time being though, the Knicks will continue to struggle mightily.

The final team for today, coming in at number 22, the Phoenix Suns. The Suns are going to lose a ton of games this year, but they will also be a ton of fun to watch. I love the young players on this roster. Devin Booker is a born scorer. He scored 70 in a game last year, and he is only getting more and more confident. I love Tyler Ulis, who should take over for Eric Bledsoe at point guard. That is no slight to Bledsoe, I think he should be traded to a contender that needs a real point guard, but the time is now for Ulis to start, especially if the Suns are going to go the youth movement. Ulis is also lightning fast and a great passer. I LOVE Josh Jackson. He might be my favorite rookie this year. He can already defend. He can get to the rim. I know people are worried about his jump shot, but he can learn to shoot. You can't teach some of the gifts he already has. He is so long and so athletic. He is going to be a very good NBA player, and a multiple All NBA defender. Dragan Bender was awful last year, but maybe with an offseason of some work, he can be better. He is also super young. Marquess Chriss came into camp overweight, but he can play himself into shape, and when he is out there, he can rebound and score in the post. Alex Len is done. That dude is a bust. He has done ZERO in the NBA. Brandon Knight is still there, but he always gets hurt, and he should be traded so the Suns can go all youth. I'm a bit confused by the contract TJ Warren got, but the dude can play, and the Suns seem to like him. Derrick Jones Jr is electrifying, and with more playing time, he could become a real player. Tyson Chandler, who I love, needs to retire. I'm sure he likes being the veteran on a young team, but he just cannot get it done anymore. Look, the Suns will be awful, but when you get a chance, watch them because they will be a ton of fun. They will run up and down the court, and they will definitely get some highlight plays throughout the season.

That is it for today, come back tomorrow for the next three teams.

The Derrick Rose "Bidding War" is the Dumbest Story of the NBA Offseason

With the Kyrie Irving news last Friday, I wasn't able to comment on the supposed "bidding war" for Derrick Rose between the Cavs and Lakers. Well that changes today. I need to talk about this, and I want to talk about this.

The fact that people have said that there is a "bidding war" for Derrick Rose literally shocked me. Why on Earth would anyone want to fight over Derrick Rose? I'm not going to sugar coat it today. Derrick Rose is washed up. He is not the "great" player he once was. In fact, I never thought he was great, I thought he was a whirling diversh and a ton of fun to watch, but I never considered him great. I thought he was good, just not great. His MVP trophy was just so they didn't have to give it to LeBron once again, even though both he and Dwight Howard, yes that same Dwight Howard, had a much better season the year he won it. The Bulls just played way over their heads, and the voters figured they'd better give it to someone that was on a one seed. LeBron should have won it that year.

Also, while in Chicago, yes he was fine, but stories already started to come out about his attitude, his penchant for hogging the ball, his willingness to ice teammates out on the floor and he was seemingly becoming un coachable. He was like Russell Westbrook, except Russell Westbrook is a better player than Derrick Rose, by far. He also had much better teammates than Westbrook had last year. And in that MVP year, Rose and the Bulls got their asses kicked by LeBron, as we all expected.

Then the injuries started. The very next season Rose tore his ACL and missed the majority of the year. The next season he rushed himself back too soon and tore his other ACL. He was becoming incredibly injury prone due to his style of play. That is the thing with Rose. He was very good at getting to the rim, but he could never ever shoot and he is a horrific defender. Great rim attacker, but everything else, very mediocre.

While the injuries piled up in Chicago, everyone who watches basketball could see that he was either unhappy or uninterested in being in Chicago, or even playing basketball for that matter. He looked truly miserable. He was probably tired of being the face of the city, he is a Chicago kid. He does seem like the kind of player that is better suited at being a second or third option. I do not think he was ever comfortable being "the man" on an NBA team. He may have never said it, but that has always been the vibe I have gotten from Derrick Rose.

Then we had last year's offseason. Rose finally got moved. The Bulls decided to finally pull the plug, much to both theirs and Rose's delight. The Bulls traded him and his one year left on his monster contract to the New York Knicks. This was supposed to be one of Phil Jackson's best moves early on as a GM. When he was traded to the Knicks and then Joakim Noah signed there, I vividly remember many people, RD included, saying this Knicks team could go to the playoffs. Hell, Derrick Rose said in his introductory press conference that the Knicks and the Warriors were both "super teams". I didn't buy any of that. This team on paper looked truly awful to me. While the Knicks should have started the youth movement and build around Porzingis, they decided to sign 2 oft injured vets and let go of a true center in Robin Lopez.

Well, we all saw how the Knicks, and Derrick Rose, played last year. Sure, he averaged 18 ppg and about 4 or 5 rebounds a game. But, he was non existent on defense, and he seemed to be more of a ball hog than Carmelo Anthony. His fit was a total disaster. When he was on the court, he either bricked jumpers, iced out Porzingis and Carmelo and it seemed like if Carmelo did a good thing on offense, Rose felt he had to do something better. He rarely ever did something better.

Let us not forget that he also just disappeared in the middle of the year. He was just gone without any explanation. Everyone seems to have just forgotten this. That he just up and left the team without any notice. He was gone, and when he came back, he acted like he did nothing wrong. He acted like the media made up some stories about him. That whole situation was completely bizarre, and just reaffirmed that he is not a franchise player.

Rose also told reporters after his "leave of absence", that he expected a max contract this offseason. That shit was laughable. How god damn full of himself. He is nowhere near a max player. And what team is going to give an oft injured player that comes and goes as they please a max deal. Not even the Kings or 76ers would do some dumb shit like that.

And then we got the report last week of the "bidding war".First off, the most money the Cavs can offer him is 2 million a year, or the veteran minimum. They could clear a bit more space if they move Irving, but it is still not that much more. The Lakers can give him a lot more money, but they are clearly going youthful, and they are clearly handing the keys to the team to Lonzo Ball. Does Derrick Rose really want to go and be a rookie's backup? How in the hell would he handle something like that? Not very well I would imagine. Also, if he signs with Cleveland, and they keep Kyrie, he is going to most assuredly be the backup point guard there. How does he handle that? Will he be happy playing the Deron Williams role from this past season? He is a better player than Williams, but not that much better. Then there is the Kyrie Irving trade scenario. If the Cavs do find someone to trade for Irving, depending on the return, how will LeBron feel having Derrick Rose as his starting point guard as opposed to Irving? He may say he likes it better, but Rose is more of a ball hog than Irving will ever be. Rose will also want to take many more big shots than Irving did, and that LeBron should. I just don't like his fit with either team.

Rose still thinks he is a great player, I never thought he was, so he should go to a team that will give him the keys. The problem with Rose being "the guy", he would have to go to a team that has no future at all. Rose is at a turning point in his career. He needs to decide if he wants money or a chance at titles. If I had to guess, he will take the money because he thinks he is still great. He is not. If I were a GM of any team, I'd stay very, very far away from Derrick Rose. I'd rather have a player like Kay Felder or Vander Blue than Derrick Rose. That is how far Rose has fallen off.
