What the Hell

How did we end up here again? I don't get it. I'm appalled. I was appalled when I saw the news last night. I was stunned reading the early calls for states. I just, I am just so very, very gutted.

This is the worst. This was my absolute worst nightmare of an outcome to this election. I cannot and do not want to accept it. I can't. I don't understand how he won. I am as confused, maybe even moreso, than I was in 2016. I have been walking around in a kind of stupor all day. I simply cannot believe that some people wanted this again. This is awful. The next president is a criminal. He is a racist. He is a rapist. He is a womanizer. He is a serial cheater. He has been married three times, that we know of. He was openly fellating a microphone just the other day. He is old as dirt. He has shown signs of brain failure. He is a disaster. And somehow he managed to win this election.

I'm scared. I don't know what is going to happen starting in 2025 when he and his cronies take over office. This is dystopian. This is like the opening scene of an apocalyptic movie or show. We are in the darkness now. America had a chance and we blew it. We didn't just blow it, we fumbled and kicked it and screwed everyone in the process. America is going to be the laughing stock when all the countries meet. We are now officially a joke. No other country will take us seriously ever again. America will gain far more enemies than allies under this "administration". I'm worried about medicine and schools. You know there's going to be anti vaxxers and book banners on that staff. They're going to try and whitewash everything they can and that is worrisome. They won't ever bring up January 6th. Also, how does that horrific coup not ban this monster from office? I'll never know that and that will haunt me. People either don't care or simply forgot about that horrible day. That was one of the worst days in the history of our country, and that crook is back in office in a few months. The Christian right should shoulder a good amount of the blame for this. They picked this guy, this rapist, racist, philanderer, because he claims to be pro life. He's not, and I would bet a good large sum of money that he has paid for multiple abortions.

What worries me most is my kids in the future. They're going to have to dig us out of this massive hole that is about to happen. My kids are young, so they will bear the brunt. I also want my kids to learn about everything in school, not just what racist white men want them to learn. I want them to have real medical access. I want them to get the care they deserve. They're going to have to make that happen in the future, but it's going to be hard and it's going to take a long, long time. I also want them to know that this is not okay. That what that dictator says is not true. That he is a liar and a cheat. He is a failed businessman. He's a silver spoon kid. He never had to work to get to where he is today. My kids will know that that is not the way to live. They will be accepting, they will be allies, they will be prepared to speak up for themselves, they will be ready for anything that comes their way, unlike the monsters going back to office in 2025. This, I promise you all.

I'm gutted, upset, annoyed, scared and disgusted by what America has become. I'm ashamed to call myself an American today. A woman can be a leader. Damn that some don't accept that in 2024. This is bad and it is only going to get worse. It is a shameful, shameful day to be an American.

Have you heard the song “America: Fuck Yeah”? It was in the underrated film “Team America: World Police”. If you have or have not heard the song, takes some time and listen to it.

That song rocks. It should be our new National Anthem.

I just wanted to give some love to the most patriotic god damn song every made.

America is the fucking best.

Politics Week: Trump and Project 2025 are Wrong for America

The Donald Trump for President team has a plan. I know that seems obvious, every person who runs for President has a plan. In 2016 the Trump team did not have a plan, and that is why his administration was a chaotic mess and the country was incredibly ill prepared for the pandemic. Not having a plan in 2016 was bad for America. Trump’s plan for another possible term as President, Project 2025, is catastrophic.

Project 2025 is a list of policy proposals, and the plan to implement them, that came out of the right-wing think tank The Heritage Foundation. Project 2025 is part of the Heritage Foundation’s “Mandate for Leadership” series that started in 1981. Project 2025 is their most aggressive plan ever and it will remake every corner of American society. Project 2025 is the New Deal of the far-right republican party.

Outside of the regular proposals Heritage always has in their “Mandates for Leadership”, policies like lower taxes on the rich, less government regulations, and stronger police, Project 2025 is adding new proposals to create an authoritarian, anti-woman, and anti-immigrant America. The 900+ page document, which I have read, is very specific in how the think tank will implement these policies. In the case of access to abortion and women’s’ health, Project 2025 wants to eliminate long standing medical practices and start to prosecute women and doctors. In the case of immigration, Project 2025 wants to indiscriminately tear apart families and force deportation even if the immigrant has a legitimate claim for political asylum. Project 2025 does not want the Congress or court system to get in the way of these radical proposals. Project 2025 expands the authority of the Executive Branch that the checks and balances of the past will have no place. If the President wants to do it, it is done.

One of the proposals in Project 2025 that is not getting as much attention is the plan to ban and criminalize all pornography. The proposal would punish anyone who has pornography, close or levy heavy fines on anyone who distributes it, such as internet providers, and lay down heavy jail sentences for anyone who creates pornography. What is hidden in this proposal is what is defined as pornography. Along with the traditional ideas of what pornography is, Project 2025 is expanding this definition to anything that incudes sexuality and gender identity. Under Project 2025, if someone was to publicly say they are gay or trans, the US Government could punish and jail that person. If a teacher is trying to help a transgender child who is in an unsafe home, that teacher would be severely punished. If a doctor gives medical care to a transgender person, that doctor will be jailed. Project 2025 does not want to ban pornography; Project 2025 wants to ban other sexual and gender identities.

Recently the public has been hearing more about Project 2025, and the proposal is not popular. Trump himself has been claiming that he knows nothing about it, yet it is written by many of his advisors who worked in the Whitehouse when Trump was President. Also, the Republican VP candidate JD Vance has publicly praised the ideas in Project 2025. Also, also the Trump team has put together their own plan for a second term called Agenda 47 which reads like a far-right wing third grader wrote Project 2025. Agenda 47 is almost the same, it just has more words like “deep state” and “fake news” littered throughout. Project 2025 and Agenda 47 identical policy twins.

The 2024 election is fast approaching, and voters are starting to do their research. The Democratic Party has rallied around Vice President Kamala Harris and the agenda of the party is starting to take shape. On the republican side we know their agenda, it is Project 2025. Trump may lie and say he does not know and/or support Project 2025, but a second Trump term would bring on the policies and plans mapped out in the 900+ page Heritage Foundation dream. The US does not need to move backward, we are better than hate and ugliness of Project 2025. It must be rejected. Trump and Project 2025 are bad for America.

Politics Week: The Republican Party is Not Conservative

Ty is on a court ordered vacation this week, so RD is taking over the writing duties. Due to the incredible time, we live in, RD is going to cover politics every day. The views expressed in these articles are the same as the website owners since it is RD that owns the website.

Politics is a game of lies. Promises are made and not kept, deals are made and then broken, truths are revealed and then found to be false. That is politics. In this game of lies there is one so big in today’s political arena that we all see yet no one cares to discuss. What is the grand lie in plain sight? The great political falsehood of 2024 is that the current Republican Party is conservative.

One could argue, successfully, that the GOP used to be conservative. I would say that the party has a few conservative philosophical pillars, but it is not 100% pure. Lower taxes, austerity measures, less business regulation, resistance to letting government initiate social changes, these are all principals the Republican Party can claim in its past. This is not the Republican Party of Donald Trump and the ghouls who wrote Project 2025.

This new Republican Party wants an absolute authoritarian ruler at the top. Whatever the President says is the law. They want a leader like the Pope of the Catholic Church. They want the entire government to center on this leader. The modern GOP doesn’t want less government interference, they want unlimited government interference from one office. This ultimate leader can, and will, set the social, economic, and foreign policy agenda as they see fit. This idea of an all-powerful executive branch is nowhere near what the true conservative philosophers believe. As a matter of fact, true conservatism would reject this idea.

Project 2025 wants the government to have total control over everything. They want the press to be only loyal to their ideas. They want businesses to do as they are told. They want the people to live as vassals to the lords and ladies of the Whitehouse. Project 2025 rejects conservatism more than the Democratic Socialists in the Democratic Party. Project 2025 is the New Deal of the anti-conservative Republican Party.

Trump and his Project 2025 gang will still claim to be conservative. They will tout the rolling back of government regulations and tax cuts as proof of their conservative bona fides. These are lies. Once implemented, Project 2025 would allow the executive branch to set new regulations on businesses. These regulations would have to do with access to abortion, hiring of protected classes, and the duty to pollute. The tax cuts will continue to only benefit the corporations and richest Americans. The rest of us will pay for any economic calamity. Trump and his lackeys at Project 2025 will say they are the conservative choice. That is a lie.

As we get ready for the 2024 election season, think about what you hear. No one trusts politics because we knowing lying is like breathing air. While you continue to dismiss the everyday talk, do not get fooled by the things that we are told is certain. Donald Trump’s and Project 2025 Republican Party is not conservative. Do not be fooled again.

Politics Week: Kamala Harris is The Democrats Best Chance

As I write these words Vice President Kamala Harris has unofficially secured enough Democratic Party delegates to be the official nominee for President in 2024. The so-called mini primary was a little noise and no real chaos. It took the Vice President just over 48 hours to rally and unite the Democrats.

 Thank goodness.

I know that the GOP and legacy media wanted uncertainty when President Joe Biden announced he would not run for reelection. Politico and others kept floating the Joe Manchin phantom candidacy. RFK jr decided to weigh in. None of the dissention came to the surface. The President endorsed Harris immediately and then most of the party fell in line. Kamala Harris will be the Democratic Party nominee for President and will take on Trump and his Project 2025 social club this fall.

 Thank goodness.

At this time in the election calendar, and at this point in history, Kamala Harris is the best candidate to take down Trump and his Project 2025 goons this November. Harris herself said it on Monday when she highlighted her career as a prosecutor and dealing with sexual predators, con men, and frauds, men like Trump. The team that Biden gives Harris, on the campaign and in the Whitehouse, is tested and they have already beaten Trump before. Also, Kamala Harris is not 81 and does not flub words or sentences very often. The Harris for President campaign is only a few days old, and it is already using its momentum to disrupt the shaky Republican effort.

We are still a few weeks away from the Democratic Party’s National Convention in Chicago, and things may change. Much to the chagrin of The New York Times, I do not think we will see any party disarray. Vice President Harris is not only united the party, but she has also energized it. A record-breaking day in fundraising and strong public appearances, coupled with Trump’s online temper tantrums, has changed the narrative of the 2024 Presidential election. Kamala Harris has been the spark the Democratic Party has needed since the halcyon days of Barrack Obama. Hope lives again.

I understand that we are still in the “honeymoon” period of the Kamala Harris Presidential campaign, but I feel like the moment has gotten better. It is not just President Biden’s act of patriotism that has brought on a brighter day, it is an excited and vibrant Harris for President campaign. Everything we have seen the last few days should leave no doubt in anyone’s mind. Kamala Harris is the Democrats best chance to win in November.

Thank goodness.

Politics Week: President Biden Did The Right Thing

In case you have not heard, President Joe Biden has said he will not continue his campaign to be reelected President of the United States. He intends to finish his term, but he is moving aside so a new Democrat can take on Donald Trump and his Project 2025 acolytes. I have some thoughts.

Joe Biden has been a good President in my opinion. I am not pleased with a lot of what his administration has done, and not done, but I do think in the last few years and the political climate we live in, Biden has done a better-than-expected job. If policy was the determining factor in voting for a candidate, Joe Biden would clearly be the front runner. Yet being a good President is not the main factor in the 2024 election. Age is, and President Biden really shows his age. That has been a problem since day one and it was put on full display the last few weeks. Biden showing his age gave Trump and his Project 2025 minions the opening they needed. When Biden stepped aside from the race, the Republicans lost their only advantage.

Should age have been the reason President Biden stepped aside. Yes, it should be. At the age of 81, Joe Biden was going to be the oldest person to ever run for President. In my state of Ohio, you cannot be a judge past the age of 70. I do not think anyone past seventy should be in the most stressful job in the world. Now that Biden took the age issue away, the Republicans are left with a 78-year-old Trump as their nominee. Again, way too old. I also know many may not know this, but Biden would mix up names and words a lot. Trump rambles like a conspiracy crazed lunatic. The man has observable cognitive decline. Now the age question surrounds the GOP nominee, and the country can decide if they want an old, crazed lunatic to be back in the Whitehouse, or do we want a capable non brain rotted person. I think the answer is obvious. The republicans have an age problem on their ticket. Everyone should know that.

I personally believe that Biden would have beaten Trump, and his Project 2025 supporters, in November. I think most of the United States do not want a competent Trump administration that would become more authoritarian and anti-immigrant and woman. Even though I still think Biden would have won, I still thinking stepping aside was the right move. The question is not who can win in November, the question is who can lead the next four years. It is obvious that if Trump wins the Whitehouse he will go back to golfing and grifting while autocrats like JD Vance and Project 2025 will start to strip people’s rights away. The Democratic Party can now tell the people that their nominee will be set for the next four years, and our democracy will be in good hands. Biden did the right thing by allowing the Democrats to chart a path for four years and beyond.

I admire President Biden for doing the right thing for his country. Whatever people may think of Joe Biden and his political career, history will look at this moment and reward him in its writing. I gave just a few reasons I think the President did the right thing, there are many more, and I wish him well the rest of his term. It is a new beginning thanks to President Joe Biden. It is now our turn to take advantage of this gift and to put Trump and Project 2025 on top of the dustheap of history.

Ohio Rejects Fascism, For Now

Last night Ohio had an election. There were no other elections anywhere in the US on this day and the voters of Ohio had only one thing to vote on. Residents of the Buckeye State, like myself, had to vote to preserve democracy here. The patriots won, and the fascist lost. They lost bad.

Issue One was a garbage law written up by a bunch of gerrymandered state reps and coordinated by our MAGA wanna be Secretary of State Frank LaRose. The law would have raised the threshold to amend the state constitution. Currently Ohio only needs a 50% plus one vote to pass a constitutional amendment. It has been like that for over 100 years. Issue one would also require all of Ohio’s 88 counties be represented on the petition. Right now, the law says 44 counties must be represented. Issue one also took way the time period to fix ballots with not enough valid signatures. All of these important changes to our democratic process were put to a vote in early August, a time that is notorious for low voter turnout.

Why was Issue One but forward? When the US Supreme Court decided to nuke Roe v Wade, Ohio republicans were quick to pass some of the worst laws aimed at women’s health. The other side, doctors, women, compassionate patriots, saw the success of pro abortion/women’s health electoral efforts in states like Kansas, Michigan, and Kentucky, and they teamed up to protect women’s rights in the constitution. Their group easily gathered the necessary signatures and were all set to go to the voters this November. The Ohio GOP know that the pro women’s health amendment will pass, so they came up with some new anti-democratic scheme to subvert the November vote. The state legislature waited until the last minute to place their plan on an August election and planned on low voter turnout to undermine the pro women’s health group. They thought they were being so clever.

Issue One failed, it failed big time. What the Ohio GOP never figured out is that with the need to communicate to voters on only one issue, the opposition could coalesce around a common message. Democracy was on the ballot. The GOP is trying to rig the game to make Ohio less democratic. Turnout hit records in the urban counties. The rural counties did not see huge surges in yes votes. Secretary LaRose and the state GOP lost, and it was not close. This November the citizens of Ohio will get to vote to protect women’s health with a new constitutional amendment.

The Ohio republican party is not done trying to undermine freedom. They will be back. The GOP controls everything in state government. Whenever their power is threatened, they change the rules. When voters speak, the Ohio GOP looks for ways to silence them. Secretary LaRose said this is the first battle in a longer war. He is right. Ohio and democracy may have won the opening battle, but we need to be prepared for the GOP’s next anti-democratic scheme. It is coming sooner than we think.

All that being said, this victory feels good. Democracy 1 - Ohio Fascists 0

Happy Fourth of July

At the start of the new year I decided I was going to be more optimistic. All the doom and gloom was not good for me. I wanted to believe we were in a better place, and in some areas I feel that is true.

It is nice not knowing what Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are up to every second of everyday. That is how a president and vice president should act. The last "president" was a total disaster and you couldn't go a moment without him popping off at the mouth. It also seems like we are on the back part, maybe even the end, of the pandemic. I was just on vacation and it felt normal. I go to restaurants with little to no anxiety anymore. I see friends and family with regularity. It is beginning to feel like pre-pandemic in the world now. Everytime I get a cold I don't instantly think it is COVID. I'm back at races, taking my kids to school and my wife is still kicking butt at work, she is also in the office more. So things are good most of the time.

Yet there are some states in this country, some places, where on this Independence Day, America still feels very divided. We still have governors who are archaic in their thinking. They don't want rights for LGBTQ+ people. They are anti transgender. They are trying to gerrymander districts. They want more power for corrupted cops. They are discriminatory jerks who think the 50's were the golden era. They were not. America was ass backwards in the 50's. We don't need a return to that time. That was the worst. So places like Florida and Texas, with their abhorrent governors, are wrong. They are trying to take their states back to the worst time in this country. They don't care about anyone besides people who look and act like them. That is wrong on every single level. They should not be celebrated on Independence Day. They don't care about freedom, especially if it doesn't look and act like them. They should be dragged through the mud. They should be shown the errors of their way. They are not better than anyone else. We are all equal and should be treated as such. So for these monsters that keep trying to revert back to a horrible time in our history, I don't wish them a happy fourth. They don't care about freedom. They clearly don't care about independence. They are out there for their own interests and that is wrong. It is also anti American. America is a melting pot. We should welcome people from other cultures, races and backgrounds with open arms. No one should be left out. That is the true meaning of independence.

So while you are out there lighting your fireworks and eating your hotdogs, take a second and thank all the immigrants, LGBTQ+, different races and cultures today. They are who makes this country truly great. They are who we should be celebrating on independence day. Happy fourth to everyone.

The People Want Legal Abortion

I am writing to politely ask, no I mean I am loudly pleading that we all take one step back before we throw the whole country off a cliff. For the last few days, I have been monitoring the public dialogue and the public sentiment when it comes to access to abortion. It seems to me that a small, very loud, part of our society is losing their minds and in the process are driving our country to a place we should not go. Please, come back from the cliff of anti-abortion zealotry.

You may ask am I pro-abortion. I do not think that my opinion matters. I am a middle-aged white man and therefore should not be the sole decider for over half of the country’s population. I am not here to discuss my personal beliefs; I am here to ask the pro-life movement to take a moment and have a discussion with this country and to not just arbitrarily decide what you think is right and what you think is wrong. Going down that path is a losing proposition for your group and a losing proposition for any political party.

Following the Supreme Court Dobbs decision many of the leaders on the right-hand side of our political spectrum were saying that the Supreme Court did not ban abortion, it just pushed the decision back to the states, to the voters. In the weeks since this historic decision, my home state of Ohio has led the country in trying to pass draconian laws aimed at punishing anything and anyone connected to abortion. No compassion, just punishment. Many of these laws are being put forward without any common sense attached to them. One proposal would ban invitro fertilization. Why would we do that? Is it the intent for the right to lifers to add to the trauma of a couple desperately trying to have a baby? Some of our state leaders have used the Dobbs decision to float the idea of banning the use of contraceptives. Again, why invade the privacy of others and add to their anguish. It has gotten so bad that the life of the mother is not even takin in into consideration to feed the right to life’s desire to not consider anyone’s pain.

The wrongheadedness of these anti-abortion absolutists came to a head recently with the news that a ten-year-old rape victim had to travel to another state to get a procedure that was going to save her life. How did the zealots on the right respond? Many questioned the story itself putting the onus on a ten-year-old to prove her trauma and relive her nightmare. A ten-year-old had to fight against grown men who have political power. Once these men were proven wrong, they immediately went to the predictable playbook of playing the victim. I will say again, these men did not feel bad about retraumatizing a ten-year-old so they could prove their “pro-life” credentials. It is madness.

The fact is that a large majority of the country does not agree with the pro-life absolutists. The ten-year-old girl story further illustrates how out of touch these people are. The Supreme Court said let the states decide. So, I ask these leaders to do just that. Let the people decide. Being elected to office does not make you a king, you represent the people. We are currently in the midsts of an election that will decide leadership at every level of government. I know that if the pro-life zealots continue to push their non compassionate out of touch agenda, they will see the losses at the ballot box and they will once again be pushed off to the side and be labeled again as the fringe.

Let the people decide. Back away from the cliff. Be compassionate and solve the true problems facing the people. You are on the wrong side of this issue.

Today Was a Good Day

5477bcc0243a81447840a99046bdb41e.jpg

Joe Biden is the President of the United States.

Thank the gods

Four years ago on this very same day I was distraught. Somehow, and I will never ever understand how, Donald Trump won the electoral college and the presidency. He lost the popular vote, but we go by the the electoral college for some unknown reason to me, and that gave that con man the win. I knew it was going to be bad for four years. I knew things would get worse. I knew he wasn’t equipped for the job. I was not only distraught, I was terrified. I didn’t think it would get as bad as it did though. Racists came out of the bushes. Borders were put up. Kids were separated from their parents. Religion started to take over the government. The “president” said and did awful things daily. Throw in the pandemic, which he claimed would “go away in two weeks”, America was in a pretty terrible place.

November of 2020, or more likely October, I decided I was going to get involved, and do what I could to get Biden and Harris elected. I phone banked, sent emails, talked to people and let it be known that we needed a change. People went out, and mailed in, votes in enormous, never before seen quantities. When the race was called on November 7th, with Biden/Harris declared the winners, they had well over 78 million votes. When it was all said and done, after numerous recounts and failed objections from Trumpublicans, Biden/Harris had 81 million plus votes. Even after those terrorists tried to delay certification on January 6th, the senate and house reconvened and certified the win. This was the moment when all the objections and court cases and all other nonsense went out the door for me. There were just two more weeks until we would finally be free from the failed con man, and his cronies.

I woke up excited this morning. I had a sense of relief. My mom said she woke up to watch Trump leave to make sure he was gone. I woke up pumped to hear Biden and Harris speak. This was the first day in four years where I actually breathed a humongous sigh of relief. I went to my folks house to watch this historic day, and I am forever grateful that I did. I got to experience this momentous, breath of fresh air with them, and it was great. It was nice to hear adults speaking. I teared up when Associate Justice Sonia Sotamayor swore in Kamala Harris. That was a historic moment for a billion different reasons. We had a Latina Supreme Court judge swearing in an African American and Asian female as the VP. It was incredible. And Harris’ speech was something to behold. Again, it was an adult saying adult things, and promising to uphold her duties as VP, and I think she will do an excellent job. Then we got to hear Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez sing. They were spectacular.

Then Biden was sworn in.

This, right here, when the power officially was handed over, was the moment where I just felt this overwhelming sense of joy and comfort and normalcy. Sure, Biden may have not been my first choice as a Democrat, but I’ve gained an enormous amount of respect for him over the past six months. He is my guy and Harris is just amazing in every possible way. I know they have a hard road to hoe ahead of them. There is a lot they have to clean up. They need to help get the vaccine out to everyone. They have to reclaim America’s clout with other countries. Biden has to get his people approved for his cabinet. There’s a lot. But you know what, I have faith they will because they aren’t con men, snakes or salesmen. They know the job ahead of them, and I have full faith they will get a lot done. It also helps that the Democrats are pretty much in full control of the Senate and House.

I have waited four long years to have this feeling, a lot of us have in fact. But it’s a great thing to once again have some semblance of people more than qualified to have the jobs they now have, or will have very soon. I’m not distraught today, I’m quite happy. Now it’s time to get to work, which I’m sure Biden and Harris are already doing. Everyone take a deep breath, the adults are in charge once again.

I had the night to sleep on the madness I witnessed yesterday, and I still woke up angry today. I also did not sleep that well because of the anger I was feeling. I watched the news for about five hours, give or take, and I never watch the news. I was glued into CNN all night. I know that CNN is very liberal, but so am I, and when I do watch news, that is the channel I choose. Going through the late afternoon, into the evening and into the late night, I found myself getting more and more agitated. I just kept thinking about what happened, how it happened and how it was stoked by the sitting "president".

This is not okay. This is not normal. Far, far from it. I thought sleeping on it would help, and while it was nice to get a little rest, as I said, I was, and still am, very angry, for many different reasons. First off, Trump is a terrorist. He is a cultist. He wanted this to happen. According to some reporting, he was "giddy" when he saw these terrorists attack the capitol. He is unwell. He is unstable. He has been unfit to run this country since he took office, and it came to the worst possible conclusion we could have imagined yesterday. To see him say what he said, to not act on it, to put out that absolute embarrassment of a video, filled with lie after lie, to not want to deploy the National Guard, and then to egg on senators to still object, the man is mentally ill.

Trump must be removed. This is not okay. Something needs to happen. I am scared of what he might do in the next 13 days. Who knows. He may seem "stable" today, but who knows how his mood may shift this evening. I do not feel safe as an American with him being the president. It is terrifying.

While Trump deserves pretty much all of the blame, there is plenty more to go around. First off, the people that enabled him for four years, who let him fan the flames of hatred, let him spew his rhetoric, they could have stepped up so much sooner and stopped him. They could have said something. They could have told him to stop. They could have forced him out. They didn't, and we were left with what happened yesterday. This is a man who surrounds himself with yes men and women, who also happen to be racist. Remember this summer when Black Lives Matter were peacefully protesting in DC? Do you remember that they were tear gassed? I sure do. Where was that last night? Why did some of the police involved seemingly invite these domestic terrorists into the Capitol building? Why wasn't the National Guard called in sooner? This could have been avoided. But Trump and his cronies did not act, just like they have not acted on anything or anyone that disagrees with them for four years.

I do want to single out two senators, that even after what happened yesterday, still had the nerve, the gall, to object to states electoral votes. Ted Cruz is, and always will be, an utter scumbag. He started these shenanigans yesterday when he objected to Arizona. He himself said he knew it wasn't going to change the outcome, but he did it anyway. This was clearly a selfish move on his behalf, done in haste because he wants to run for president in 2024, and he wants those terrorists from yesterday, he wants their votes. What a slimy, disgusting and embarrassing human being. He deserves just as much blame as Trump.

Yet Cruz was outdone by the one senator who really deserves to be dragged, to be called out, and quite frankly, should be removed from his post, is Josh Hawley. He was egging on these terrorists before the insanity. There are photos everywhere of him cheering along with these terrorists. Then he disappeared when the madness started, but still found it important to object to Pennsylvania's electoral votes.

Who the hell does Hawley think he is? What kind of privileged asshole does something like this? What was he thinking, after seeing what happened, to still object to Pennsylvania? And, like the coward, and punk he is, he objected, but ceded his speaking time. That is one of the biggest punk moves I have ever witnessed. He wanted to object, but he refused to speak. What a coward. What a sheep. What a yes man. Hawley has blood on his hands. He is just as responsible for the deaths of the four terrorists yesterday as Trump is. His actions prior to the attack and after are despicable. He is the worst of the worst. I despise that he is a senator from the state that I preside in. I am embarrassed that people voted for him, and that some still support him. His actions, to still object to Pennsylvania, when people like Kelly Loeffler and Lindsay Graham and Lankford, and almost all the other republican senators that decided to back off after the attack, are appalling, scary, disgusting and messed up. Hawley is clearly an egomaniac, a psychopath and a narcissist. He only cares about himself and his political career. He is a scary person, and I sure as hell am going to do all I can to get his punkass out of his senate seat. I don't know what I can do, but I will find ways to have him removed from office, or have him tried in court. He is a monster. He is equally responsible for the attack on our democracy and our country by these domestic terrorists yesterday. He is a shameful human being.

I will never, ever forget yesterday. This is forever burned in my brain as one of the worst days in American history. It is clear that Trump, Cruz and Hawley could care less about anyone other than themselves. I hope they know karma is real, and their actions yesterday will forever haunt them. We need Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in office ASAP. I know January 20th is Inauguration Day, but I would like them in office sooner than that. With both Democrats winning their runoffs in Georgia yesterday, the sooner we get Biden and Harris in office, the sooner we can start to heal.

January 6th is a day that will live in infamy, and I will never forget, or forgive, those who stood by and did nothing. We need people in positions of power, Biden and Harris, who will do their jobs, and do them exceptionally. We need to recover from this mess. But we also need to always remember what we saw, and how it made the majority of us feel. It is more than time for the Biden/Harris staff to get to work. Hopefully they will sooner rather than later.

This Needs to End

black.png

I was going to write about Devonta Smith today, but that will have to wait for tomorrow.

I, like many others, have been waiting for this day. Today is the day that Congress is supposed to certify Joe Biden and Kamala Harris' victory in November. I have been staying away from politics because it is a trigger for me. I am a super liberal, and all the legal nonsense, and infighting and refusal to concede has just made me more anxious by the day. I have ways of thwarting all the anxiety, and that has worked. Then one of my own state's senators, a man I truly despise, Josh Hawley, said he was going to object to certify. This is wrong, it is selfish, it was all about himself and he knows that it will not work. Then something like twelve other senators decided they would join the house republicans in objecting. Again, this is a futile attempt, and the people doing this are only doing it to further their own political careers. They know Biden and Harris won, but they want that crazy far right vote. They are playing to their base, and that is wrong. But all politics is dirty and gross and shady.

What just happened, what I just read when I went to check on how the session was going, is one of the most disturbing and upsetting things I have ever read. Apparently some of these far right protesters, egged on earlier in the day by this century's Hitler, Donald Trump, stormed the capitol, threatened violence and they had to suspend the count to get the people inside to safety. What we are witnessing now, what we are all seeing is an attempted coup. It shouldn't have come to this. It didn't have to come to this. This is supposed to be a quiet day where congress gets the job done quickly, and people are able to go back to their everyday lives. But not today. Because Trump, and all of his enablers that have fed into his hysteria, we are now in a situation that no one, and I mean no one, wants. This is a nightmare. This is a disaster. This was the worst possible outcome of the day. The election is over. Biden won. He won both the popular vote and the electoral vote. But Trump, and his insane lawyers, have tried to deny all the way, and now we have ended up with what happened today.

Is this the new Republican party? Do they invite coups? Do they feel good about all of this? Are they happy with where we are right now because they didn't get their way? Why the challenge to the election when they were on the same ballot? None of this, and I mean NONE, makes any sense. My children have more sense and respect than this, and they are eight and five. What am I supposed to tell them today about our country? What have we become? To the people that voted for this four years ago, are you happy today? Is this the country you wanted? Is this the look you were going for in 2016? Gosh I hope not.

This is a day that is going to go down in history as one of the worst ever. My kids will read about this in history books. I will remember exactly where I was 20, 30 and 40 years from now on January 6th 2021. To all the republicans that decided to contest the election, this is on you. I hope you are proud of yourselves. And to Trump, and his baseless, phony goons, this is all of your fault. You are a disgrace. You will be remembered only as a monster, a nuisance and a national nightmare. Your "legacy" is forever tarnished by your actions. Anything he says and does now, it is all moot because of his actions today, and for the past two months, and in fact, for all of his life. People are in danger. People from his own party, and people who supported him, are in danger because of him, and the dozen or so senators, and hundreds of house republicans, who thought contesting this election, named the most secure in history, are in this mess because of him. The US is the "shithole" country, and it is because of Trump and his enablers. This is horrible, it will go down as a horrible day in history and it will take a long, long time to recover from this as a country. I would hope that Trump is removed from office today, and then thrown in jail. That seems like the only fair punishment for what he has wrought. We need Biden and Harris in power ASAP because we cannot allow this to happen. We are supposed to be the greatest country in the world, but today, we are the worst. I am scared and I am disappointed.

What a tragic day, and a day that will go down in infamy.

Saturday Was a Very Good Day

flag.jpg

This is a blog I have been waiting, and hoping, to write for four years now. And I know that the current "president" is trying to throw a fit, act like a petulant child, claim there has been fraud, is firing people for no reason, not signing documents and not conceding, but Joe Biden has won the 2020 presidential election. He, and Kamala Harris are the president and vice president elect, and on January 20th, they will be in the White House.

I am very proud, and relieved. I have been on pins and needles for over a week now. I was very, very nervous about the outcome. Even when Biden gained ground, and then took the lead in Pennsylvania and Georgia, I was still very nervous. After what happened in 2016, I will always be a bit nervous about election stuff. But it is clear that Biden/Harris have won. Even with the court cases, many of which are being thrown out daily, and many, many people within the GOP telling him to concede, there is no evidence to anything that he and his people are trying to say was wrong. What he is doing is a waste of time, and is going to hurt people every day in the long run. And even with the recounts and everything, Biden/Harris are so far ahead, it really doesn't matter.

With all of that out of the way, I want to tell everyone about my Saturday when I heard the excellent news. I had been checking the news hourly to get updates since election day. I would go to bed each night still scared of the outcome. I would wake up and see where the count was now, and how many votes were left, and do the math in my own head. I was a mess. I woke up, picked my kid up from his friend's house around 10:00am, and sat down to watch Michigan, who started at 11. At around 1030am I got a text from my mom, my brothers were all attached, including RD, and she said, "President Biden", and added three blue hearts. I jumped off my couch, I texted back, "is it real!!!! is it true!!!!". My mom said, "that is what is being reported", and then RD said, "Yes, it is true". I responded with a "Yes!!!!!!", and my brother Seth said, "YES!!!!! Goodbye Mr Cheeto". Which prompted me to text, "Yeah!!!! Hell yeah!!!!". Then my phone started to blow up with texts from my friends who share my political ideals. We were all joyous. I didn't even care what happened in the Michigan game that day, they got blasted by Indiana by the way, because this country had finally gotten some good, decent news in 2020.

This year has been pretty rough. We all know that. So to get some good news, to feel human and normal again, that was nice. I spent the rest of Saturday just kind of floating around. I went for a run and ran one of my fastest 4k's to date. I kept up with my friends via text all day. I felt like I was finally able to breath again. I felt, for the first time in a very, very long time, proud to be an American. Democracy worked. The people made their choice. And I know it is kind of hip to say, "well, 70 million people still voted for that monster". That's true, but 75 million, and counting, voted for Biden and Harris.

That night my folks were over, and we watched the acceptance speech. It was amazing. Watching Kamala Harris speak was a thing of beauty. She is such a good speaker, and her speech was truly amazing. I had both of my kids come into the room to watch with us because this is history. This is something they will talk about forever. This will be in history books and be studied and mentioned until the end of time. And when she said, "I may be the first woman, but I won't be the last", I teared up. I told my daughter, who is only five, that this proves she can truly be whatever she wants to be. This gives me hope. Her speech made me so very, very proud and happy and joyful. It was truly wonderful.

Biden's speech was exactly what I hoped it would be. He was gracious in victory, and then he turned immediately to the issues. He profoundly said that he will be a "president for all the people". He told people that didn't vote for him to not turn away, that he wants to help them too. He made many mentions to political parties, but he always came back to, "we are all Americans". It was exceptional. I was floating all day, and after the speeches, I was on a cloud. It was the first time in weeks, hell years, that I have felt calm and comfort. I know they have a lot of work to do, and it will not be easy. It is going to be quite hard in fact. But, I believe that Biden, and maybe moreso, Harris, are more than up to the task. They have already gotten a COVID taskforce together, they have met and they have plans. They just need that monster currently in the White House to accept the results, and let them get to work.

Saturday was a good day. It was a celebration that was a long time coming. And just like I had hoped, Biden and Harris did just that, and then got to work the very next day. Good job America, we did the right thing. Now let's let them do their job.

We All Have Something to Do Tomorrow

vote.png

Tomorrow is a very, very important day. Tomorrow will tell me, and a bunch of others I'm sure, where we stand as a country. Are some people really this racist? Are some people too far gone? Do we not have morals or ethics? Do people actually care? Do people want change? Will we ever see a way out of this pandemic? There are these questions, and about a billion more that we should get some answers to. But the way to get the answers some want, that I want, is to vote.

Voting is the best way to fight the system. I know a lot of people will read this and tell me, you're a dyed in the wool Democrat, how are you fighting? I'm fighting because we are so far gone from the country we were four years ago. I look at life now and compare it to 2016, and man it is bleak. It's not so bleak for me personally, but as a country, we are in a bad, bad place. We are in the midst of a pandemic with no end in sight. We are more than broke. We are divided. We pass judgements based on people's political beliefs without even knowing them. This is all due to the current "government" we have in the White House.

The current regime does not care about anyone but themselves and their wallets. They want division. They want to stay rich, break the law and tear away so many things that made us better from 2000 to 2016. In those 16 years we made advancements. Gay marriage became legal. Healthcare became affordable. Trans people had rights. Wars weren't as prevalent. Both parties worked together. Things were, on the surface, fine. I have my problems with George W Bush, and I know people have their issues with Barack Obama, who I absolutely adore, but all in all, things weren't this bad. Since 2016 things have gotten markedly worse. Things have essentially crumbled. Businesses are filing for bankruptcy daily. Poor people are only getting poorer. Families are being torn apart because of a stupid border issue. The people in power want to rip away affordable healthcare. We are in a horrific pandemic. My kids just went back to in person learning a few weeks ago, but they have to learn a whole new set of rules. I know other places aren't allowing kids back until the new year. Sports have no fans, and some have been outright canceled for the year. I don't feel safe going to restaurants, movie theaters or playgrounds. To see friends and family, on the very rare occasion that I do, I wear a mask.

This is a nightmare. We are living in the darkest timeline. And for those who think it can't get worse, it can get much, much worse. The best way to combat that, in my opinion, is to vote. There has been an enormous amount of early voters, which is great. Personally, I'm going to my polling place when it opens tomorrow at 6am. I prefer to vote in person. But now is the time. If you have a mail in ballot, and you haven't mailed it, go drop it off in person at your polling place. If you go to vote in person, and there is a line, wait. They cannot kick you out of line, even if it gets past closing time. If you are there before, you get to vote. It is your duty, and the law. Don't let people bully or harass you in the lines. Some may want to try intimidation, ignore them. They are not the law, and they cannot stop you from voting. There will be obstacles, and it may get frustrating, especially if you have to wait, but just think how good it will feel when you cast your ballot. Go out tomorrow and exercise your right to vote. Don't sit this election out. Make sure your voice is heard. Also, look into the local people and amendments in your town. Those issues are just as important to vote for.

I will not be writing tomorrow because I want everyone to go out and vote. I don't want someone to read a sports story of mine tomorrow and forget to vote. This is too important a moment to not speak your mind and vote. Go vote. Ignore any and all of the early polls and numbers. We were all duped in 2016, so make sure you vote no matter what you read or hear. This is it. This is the time. Please vote. Please.

We Need New Leadership

white house.jpg

It would feel odd if I didn't finish out this week with some kind of political and social piece. I will get back to the more pop culture stuff next week, but this week has been a historic one. I talked about the boycott, I talked about the shooting of another unarmed black man and I have talked about how this seems to be a moment, or at least the beginning of a moment, in the US.

There is something, hopefully, happening right now. People are fed up. People are sick and tired. People want change. Everyone wants equal rights. The time has come for an uprising, and a removal of racist assholes in positions of power. There has been so much civil unrest since the goblin that resides in the White House took office almost four years ago. It has all been bad. He has emboldened racists and fascists and, quite frankly, mentally unstable people. We are in the midst of a seemingly never ending pandemic. People have seemed to just push that aside. We have unemployment rates as bad as they have ever been. There are so many more problems where we sit today than there were five years ago on the exact same day. The US is a mess. The country is divided. Things are just awful. There are days I do not want to get out of bed because I am fearful for what the day will hold. My kids are currently learning virtually. This is all messed up.

We need to change. We need to get out and vote these monsters out of power. We need to be proactive and tell these monsters that enough is enough. Look, Joe Biden wasn't my first choice either. I am a dyed in the wool Democrat. I will always vote blue. But I was on the Beto train at first, then I jumped on the Warren train and then I was all in for Bernie. They didn't get the nomination, and I know that frustrates a lot of people who don't follow one particular political party. And, as I said, Biden wasn't even in my top five of choices. But then he picked Kamala Harris as his running mate, and I have watched him and her speak, and I am ready to run through the wall to vote for them. Change takes time. The country is going to be a two party system no matter what we do at the moment. So, I implore people to vote for Biden and Harris, even if they weren't your tenth choice. As my wife said the other day, "this is truly an election where we pick the lesser of two evils". I couldn't agree more. Go out and vote to get Biden and Harris in the White House. They will, at the very least, level things out. And during their time in office, the people who want there to be more than two political parties, go out and pound the pavement and do all you can to make this more than a two party system. But now, or in November at least, we need to do the right thing. We need Biden and Harris to win. We need them in the office.

I cannot imagine how much worse the next four years could be if the people currently in office stay there. They have shown no signs that they believe in science, that they care about anyone other than themselves, that they care about people that don't look like them, that they have a soul, it is all very, very frightening. I am truly scared what the US will look like if we get four more years of this nonsense. I don't know that it will ever be the same, but Biden and Harris have shown that they listen to scientists. They have talked about mandating masks throughout the country. They both clearly have empathy and souls and are willing to talk and, more importantly, listen to people of other races. We need to go out in record numbers and vote these monsters out. We need to show them that they cannot, will not, steal another election from the people. I'm sick of them acting like the CoronaVirus is gone. I'm sick of them claiming that people are safe. We are as far from safe as we have ever been, at least in my lifetime. And I'm sick of all the other lies and hatred and rhetoric and fear mongering that these scumbags have perpetuated over these last four years.

It is time to lead. Let's keep with this momentum. Let's continue to stick with one another and demand change. Let's get all the criminals out of the White House that are there right now. Please, I implore and beg you, vote in November. And if you are on the fence, or upset that it wasn't your pick, just take a look at where we are as a country right now and think about if you want four more years of this. Your vote is your vote, I just hope it is used for the right reasons this time. Please, please let's make some changes.

Some Thoughts on Vice Presidential Nominee Kamala Harris

file0001721418248.jpg

Joe Biden selected Kamala Harris to be his running mate in the 2020 presidential election. I have a few brief thoughts.

Thought #1 - This is awesome. I love the history making of the pick, the first women of color to be at the top of the ticket. I love the competency of the pick, Kamala Harris has the record and skill set to be the Vice President. I love the bravery of the pick, Trump and his minions were already planning on using Harris’s statements against Joe Biden during the Democratic Party primary debates, now she can directly answer their attacks.

Thought #2 - Who cares what Fox News and the right wing media machine thinks. The fact is no matter who Biden picked, they were going to attack. Trump is in the running for being the worst President in US history. He is a conspiracy theory peddling, angry, mean old man. There is no joy to Trump. The only thing his GOP media enablers have in their arsenal is the ability to attack people personally. I love that Kamala Harris will bring out the worst in the Trump backers. America can see the hate this group has for others.

Thought #3 - This only matters if you get out and vote. Trump is not popular, but he is powerful. He is also craven. It is obvious that the GOP is doing everything they can to delegitimize the 2020 election. Losers can only win through cheating, and the GOP is led by losers. Trump and his backers are not patriots, they do not believe in the Constitution. Like Trump, the GOP is filled with con-men and con-women. They will do everything. including a bunch of illegal stuff, to stay in power. Take their power away and make damn well sure you vote on, or before, November 3rd.

It is now time to get to work.

Kamala Harris, Vice President of the United States. I like the sound of that.

You Can Love America and Think the President is a Dangerous Idiot

Today I am going to do something a little different.

I have been talking a lot about basketball, movies and music lately, but I want to do something a bit more timely, and political. I know that I have said that I don't like to talk politics. It makes me angry, I get all red faced and I tend to rant. But, the most recent remarks from that moron that sits in the White House right now have really made me disgusted, angered and scared for the future of this country. It has also made me take a hard look at the young voters, and people my age that may not have voted in the last election, or voted for the buffoon in office because they "didn't like" Hilary Clinton. And, before I get into the meat of my piece, you all know how liberal I am, and I consider myself a firm Democrat. Keep that in mind as you read.

The thing I want to talk about today, which was given to me by my father as we went out for our weekly cup of coffee, was how much the parties, and voting, has changed since I was eligible to vote way, way back in 2000. In 2000 I was about to become a senior in high school, and Bill Clinton was sitting in office. I lived in a household that has 2 liberal parents, and all my brothers were liberal Democrats as well. I knew, or heard, that Bill Clinton had done a fine job, save for the Monica Lewinsky stuff. He helped the country get into the green. We were doing okay. There were no wars. The economy seemed fine. Everyone seemed happy, or at least okay. I'm sure some parents of friends of mine didn't like Clinton because of the Lewinsky stuff but, as far s a nation, they really had nothing to complain about.

When I became 18, and legally able to vote, I did not know any better. I did know that I did not like George W Bush. He seemed ill fitted to take office. He was a silver spoon kid that didn't really have to work hard for much of anything. Everything was handed to him. I did like Al Gore. I mean, he was boring, very milquetoast and I think he assumed he was just next in line to president. I also didn't really know what he stood for. I was going to vote for him simply because he was the Democratic nominee, and I was, and still am, a Democrat. But then I read, and really got into, the third party candidate, Ralph Nader. This was simply based on the fact that he wanted to legalize marijuana, I am not a pot smoker by the way, and that he LOVED the NBA. He went as far as to write a letter to then commissioner David Stern about the injustice that the Kings faced in that ridiculous game 7 that the Lakers won, where they shot a million free throws. This swayed me. This made me think twice about who I wanted to vote for. And, like an idiot, I voted for Nader. I didn't realize at the time that voting for a third party candidate was essentially throwing your vote in the trash. I still regret it to this day. But, I figured all was good when Gore won the popular vote by over 500,000 votes.

This was my first time realizing that the popular vote didn't matter in the presidential election, it was all about the archaic electoral college. Bush somehow won this, and for the next 8 years, I grew more and more angry, and more and more liberal. I did not agree with anything Bush stood for. I am violently anti war. He started a war with Iraq because he felt like his daddy wanted him to. I do not think the rich should get richer and the poor should get poorer. All he cared about was his rich friends and rich donors. He was a horrendous public speaker, and his speeches that were broadcast embarrassed me to no end. He lost trillions of dollars while in office, basically erasing all the good Clinton had done. He famously fumbled the handling of September 11th. Everyone remembers the "Mission Accomplished" sign, right? His eight years in office, for me, were horrific, embarrassing and very, very rocky. It was near a nightmare.

Then in 2008 we had Barack Obama win the Democratic nomination. I was absolutely stoked by this. He was the first African American to win the nomination. He was eloquent. He was sharp looking. He gave me a feeling of comfort and enthusiasm Bush never gave me. I ran to the polls to vote for him. I could not have been more ecstatic. I was so ready for him to become president, and he crushed his way into the White House. After his first year, things started to get back to normal again. We started pulling troops out of an unnecessary war. We were making money as a country again. His people got Bin Laden. When he spoke, I stopped what I was doing so I could listen. He took a terrible situation from Bush and made it so much better. Sure, people have their problems with him, but the country was good. We were good as a nation. No one seemed to worried about war, debt or any other thing that could go wrong. We were in safe hands. I was even more stoked when he won reelection in 2012, but that seemed like a foregone conclusion. He exceeded every expectation, and became, in my opinion, the greatest president ever. He is also cool as hell, and in this day, that is important. Obama would show up to basketball games, he listened to hip hop, he was happily married with 2 great kids and a dog, he had a court out in at the White House, he would do podcasts. He understood the young generation of voters, and spoke to them. He is, without a doubt, the best representation of a Democrat that I have ever seen. I show pictures of him to my kids and sing his praises. I want them to know what a real president looks and acts like. I was in heaven for the 8 years he was in office.

Then November of 2016 came around.

Look, I was sure that Hilary Clinton was going to be president. So much so that I showed her to my kids and said "there is the first female president" about a month before the vote. She crushed in all the debates. She is a real politician. She is a genius. She knows how to handle herself, and she isn't a complete goon and doofus. Then something very weird happened on election night. She wasn't crushing the way I expected. She was killing it in the popular vote, but for some reason, that damn electoral college thing kept popping up against her. I was playing basketball that night, and I kept checking my phone and saying, "no, no, no, this cannot be happening". And then it was announced that the dickhead that lives in the White House now, was going to win. I was stunned, dismayed and terrified all at once. I went on for days afterward telling myself to wake up from this nightmare. Either I'm still asleep, or what is happening right now is real life. I wish I were asleep, but every time I pinch myself, or tell myself to wake up, I feel it and I am awake. These past three years have been nothing short of an absolute train wreck. I wake up everyday to something new that makes me even more terrified. I simply cannot believe what I am seeing, hearing and reading. It just gets worse and worse and worse.

It all really came to a head a few days ago when that dipshit was holding yet another rally, and his mouth breathing supporters started to chant "send her back" about Representative Ilhan Omar. Representative Omar is from Minnesota. She migrated to this country legally in 2000. She is more American than any person that was at that Klan rally the other night, Yet, when he is asked about it, he says he told them to stop. No he didn't. When other Republicans are asked about it, they skirt the question. When reporters at Fox News are asked about it, they make up excuses.

This is frightening. This is not the Republican party anymore. Sure, I very much disagreed with Bush, but he never put human beings in cages. He never put babies in cages. He never slept with multiple prostitutes. His wife wasn't a prisoner who only cares about money. His kids weren't all over the TV spewing racist rhetoric. His kids weren't involved in Ponzi schemes. He didn't, at least publicly, say racist homophobic and xenophobic things. He never said to "grab them by the pussy" when talking about ladies. And you better believe that Barack Obama never did any of this stuff. He was, and still is, all class.

Since the jackass that is currently in office has been there, not a day goes by that I am not afraid, embarrassed and want to shy away from being an American. We, as Americans, have become a joke and looked upon as idiots because of the current "government". I don't think this is what the Republican party had in mind when they nominated this idiot. But, they will not say a bad word about him, and even worse, they are now defending him. History books will remember everyone involved with this as horrible, horrible monsters. My kids will read about this in history books, and it will look to them like Nazi Germany looks to me.

What scares me most is my generation, and the generation younger than us. My generation has a few groups. You have the super liberals like myself, the "Bernie Bros" and angry people that will not admit they are racist, even though they clearly are if they support this current regime. The problem there is, the angry people go out and vote. Super liberals do too, but it is the "Bernie Bros" that decided to sit out the last election, and are now thinking about doing the same in 2020. Please, if you don't want to be afraid for the next 4 years, do not sit out the next election. Your vote matters. The generation younger than me is filled with rich white kids that think what has been going on for three years is funny, and that it won't affect them. Believe me, it will, and it will hurt bad. You will not always have mom and dad's money. You will have to work for something one day, and then, when you may be in a bind, this won't be as funny as it is to you now. When you can't find work, and the bills pile up, you may get desperate. And you know who won't be there for you, the current "government".

The current state of American politics sickens me and makes me sad. Also, if you can look at what is going on right now, and think it is okay, even if you are family, do not speak to me about anything political or racial. You are clearly a closeted racist, and you have no heart. This country has become a shell of itself since I was able to vote back in 2000. In 2020 we can change that and get back to where we were from 2008 to 2016, when Obama made me as proud as I have ever been to be an American. Now lets go out and make our voices heard, and show these bullies that we don't work for them, they work for us, and we want change.

Ty Voted

Today is a very important, very big day for the future of our country. But, I am not going to sit here and tell you who you should vote for, or why you should vote for that person or that proposition. We have all been, properly, inundated with reasons why. Instead, I am going to tell you why I voted the way that I voted. Why this all means so very much to me, my wife and the future of our children. Why I want to see change for the better, and why I think the people I voted for will bring about said change. Why all the people who thought that not voting 2 years ago were so very wrong. That is what I want to put out there today.

I voted because, like the majority of people, the last 2 years have been hell on Earth. I cannot go a single day without the idiots in DC doing something stupid, illegal, immoral, wrong and despicable. It is so disheartening to wake up every single god damn day and see that everything is more screwed up than it was the day before. The people that currently reside in DC, when they aren't playing golf or hanging at their tacky ass club, which seems to be about 99 percent of the time, are morons with no political training. They have bent over backwards to try and push us back to a time in American history that is wrought with tension. I didn't grow up in the 50's, but I have read enough and heard enough to know that is was pretty awful back then, especially for minorities and women.

I feel like the people I voted for, all Democrats, can get us back, in some shape and form, to how we were 3 years ago. I am talking about when Obama was in the White House and things were smooth. There wasn't a day, for the entire 8 years that Obama was president, when I was worried. Now, I am worried every single day. This has spread to my kids, and even though she won't admit it, my wife. I am terrified for my son everyday he goes into his school. There have been so many shootings at so many different places, and schools are one of the main spots, since this group of buffoons took over. They are so much more worried about lining their pockets and getting money from organizations, like the terrorist group NRA, than the safety of children. So, every morning when I drop my son off, I get antsy. I tense up. It isn't until 4 pm my time, when I see his face, do I feel better. I feel like there are people on ballots now that can change that for me. My wife works in a male and conservative dominated industry. I fear that if they knew that her husband was such a liberal, they would give her the stink eye. They would look at her in a different light. My father worked in a field filled with conservatives, and even though he did get sideways looks, he never deviated. My wife is the same, but still, I don't want her to be judged because of me while she is working. My daughter will be starting school soon too, so my worries will double. Also, she is a female, and women have had a very, very rough go of it for the past 2 years. This current "government" looks down on them. That is so wrong on so many levels. My daughter will not be told she is lesser than, and she will not be raised that way. I voted for some people today so my daughter can see that women can be in charge and can be powerful. That she doesn't have to take crap from a guy, just because he is a guy. She is going to be a strong, independent woman, and I want her to see other strong, independent women in positions of power.

As far as the people who decided that they didn't need to vote, or didn't want to vote 2 years ago, what a waste. I hope these past 2 years have been just as brutal for you as they've been for me. This whole situation, what is going on in the US right now, directly involves you. To all the "Bernie Bros", who I was once affiliated with, and the people who thought it would be funny to have the current "president" that is there right now and the people who claimed, "their vote didn't matter", that was all nonsense. Your displeasure with Hilary, or inability to get over yourself, or your flat out stupidity has helped put us where we are today. Your non vote was a vote for this current group of assholes. As I said, I loved Bernie Sanders, but he wouldn't have won, and Hilary Clinton was a much better option. Now is the time to get over it.

Today I have hope, but I also have many, many doubts. I have read good news, but I also read good news 2 years, and look what happened. We need change in this country. We need to get out there and let our voices be heard. We need to show the bullies that we are not afraid of them. We need to let these monsters know that they work for us, we don't work for them. We need to let terrorist groups like the NRA know that they can't just buy our vote. We need to stand up, exercise our right and vote these assholes out. I'm done with thoughts and prayers. I'm done being scared. I'm done reading bad news constantly. That can all change.

Please, if you haven't already, go out there and let your voice be heard. Go out there and vote like our lives, our kids lives, our kid's kids lives and their kid's kids lives depend on it, because it does.

John McCain and Neil Simon: The Death of Icons

Over the weekend we lost two icons of American culture. Eighty-One year old former US Navy Hero, Presidential candidate, and longtime Senator from Arizona, John McCain passed away surrounded by family and friends on Saturday. The very next day, American play, and screen, writer Neil Simon passed away at the age of ninety-one. Both men defined their professions, and their era. Both men leave a legacy that will be studied for generations. With the deaths of John McCain and Neil Simon, the eras they helped create are gone, they were their last champions. We can now only reflect on their lives.

It is easier to look at the life of Neil Simon with reverence. The man wrote plays that were not that controversial, yet they influenced us all. Simon wrote stories that were critical and financial successes. The man penned The Odd Couple, The Brighton Beach Trilogy, Barefoot in the Park, Chapter Two, and Lost In Yonkers, and those are just a few from the top of the head. Lost in Yonkers won the Tony Award and the Pulitzer Prize. Neil Simon won all the awards, broke all the box office records, and was the defining comedy playwright of the late twentieth century. Simon's name belongs on the Mount Rushmore of great American playwrights next to Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, and Eugene O'Neill. There is no denying the influence Neil Simon has had on the American theater. He is legendary.

(Ed Note: I also owe Neil Simon a debt of gratitude in that the film version of Biloxi Blues made me want to study theater and I was fortunate enough to play Arty in Lost in Yonkers during my senior year of college and then played the father, Eddie, seven years later. I went from looking sixteen to looking forty in less than one decade. Thanks Neil.)

The death of John McCain is not as easy to find automatic reverence. Many people may be mad once they read that sentence, but it is the truth. When someone spends as long as they did in elective office as Senator McCain, there is a long list of accomplishments, and shortcomings, that need to be part of their life story.

Let's start with John McCain's military service. Anyone who questions what John McCain went through as a POW in Vietnam is a terrible kind of human being. No person, who holds any elected office in the United States of America, has any right to criticize John McCain's time as a POW. You are a coward, and not a patriot, if you use your platform to criticize a war hero. John McCain did not have to go to Vietnam, his father was a freaking US Admiral. John McCain was connected. He could have had multiple deferments and joined the Arizona National Guard, or claimed to be suffering from bone spurs, but he went to fight. He was captured, and he suffered. Navy John McCain is a goddamn hero. There is no debate.

Once out of the Navy, John McCain was a national hero. He was elected by the people of Arizona to serve in the US House of Representatives and then later to the US Senate. The early years of Congressman John McCain were not notable, except for one scandal. In 1989 Senator John McCain was one of five Us Senators accused of corruption in relation to Charles Keating, a chairman in a major savings and loans firm that was failing. Senator McCain was accused of being corrupt in trying to ease the government pressure on Keating. McCain was later cleared of doing anything illegal, but the Senate still said that the young senator exhibited "poor judgement". Those words would follow John McCain for the next decade.

The new millennium brought a new political narrative for Senator John McCain. The 2000 Republican presidential primary saw McCain challenge the establishment pick of George W Bush. The race started off well for McCain, who was using campaign finance as a center point of his campaign. The Arizona Senator won the first primary in New Hampshire, but the next step was South Carolina. McCain's ideas were not on the ballot, but his adopted Bangladeshi child was an issue. The George W Bush campaign never claimed to be involved, but many people loyal to the Texas Governor's campaign did spread rumors that McCain's adopted daughter was actually a blood relative that McCain had as a result of an affair with an African American prostitute. It will never be known if the lie worked, but Bush won South Carolina and marched his way to the Republican nomination. John McCain was destined to be back in his Senate seat.

Having lost the 2000 Republican presidential primary did not stop John McCain from pursuing his dream of campaign finance. The Republican from Arizona teamed up with John Feingold, a Democrat from Wisconsin, to pass the Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act in March of 2002 (the law is usually known as the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Law). McCain's embarrassment from the Keating Five scandal was now clean because he was the author of America's first campaign finance regulation.

It was a hollow victory.

The loopholes left in the McCain-Feingold law helped to give rise to "dark money" and "Super PACS". The terribleness of the 2016 election is directly related to what was possible because of the 2002 Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act. McCain-Feingold just put a band aid on a gaping wound.

Yet John McCain's reputation as a rebel in his party, a maverick one may say, was just starting to grow. The media loved Maverick McCain. He is the most frequent guest ever on Meet the Press. Once it was obvious that John McCain would be the 2008 Republican nominee for President, Fox News opened their doors to glowing coverage of the Arizona Senator. Senator John McCain became the goto guy for the Washington DC media. The maverick even landed in political hot water when he had to defend his opponent in the 2008 election from the seemingly slanderous notion of being an Arab. His defense did not work, Barrack Obama easily won the 2008 election for President and John McCain was once again heading back to the US Senate.

It also a very important part of John McCain's political career to point out the fact that he chose Sarah Palin as his running mate in 2008. The rumor is that the maverick wanted to bring in former democrat Joe Lieberman, but the Republican party wanted the Governor of Alaska. The maverick lost, and the party won, and America now had to deal with the Palin part of American politics. The Republican Party has been forever altered because of the ascension of Sarah Palin, and John McCain is responsible for that.

Since 2008 Senator McCain tried to hold onto to his branding as a maverick. He opposed any policy that allowed for the US to use torture on captured enemy combatants, yet he continually supported the "wars" in Afghanistan and Iraq. It should be noted that McCain did express regret for these military actions in the last few months of his life. He sided with his party in trying to defeat the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare), yet just a few months ago he was the deciding vote in keeping the law alive. McCain endorsed, and campaigned for Mitt Romney in 2012, yet he would not support Donald Trump in 2016. There was never a clear partisan path for McCain, that is why the Washington media loved him. That is why he was always on the television.

All the way up to last Saturday, John McCain was called a maverick by some circles, and a politically craven opportunist by other circles. Both are right. That is why looking back at the career of John McCain is so difficult. We all (well almost all) can agree with his heroism as a US Navy pilot, but his second act, his political career, is filled with opportunity and missteps. We must celebrate the man for his service, but we cannot excuse his shortcomings. The hero that is John McCain would not have accepted that.

Neil Simon and John McCain are now gone. They will never do another interview, they will never be in attendance for a standing ovation, they will never offer us another word of wisdom, they are gone. Both men were icons of their era, and they are now confined to being a part of the history of their eras. Society will move on, a new voice of the American theater will be crowned, a new maverick will arise in Washington DC. We can only hope that these new voices can be as influential as Neil Simon and John McCain. For better or worse.

The Blue Wave Starts Tomorrow

Here it comes

I went to a comedy show last weekend, but my review will have to wait for tomorrow. Today I’m going to keep it short, but important.

Tomorrow is a big, big day. People out there need to get out and vote tomorrow. August 7th is a big day in many states (my home Missouri, my vacation spot Michigan, Kansas, Washington, and a special election in Ohio) and we need to make our voices be heard. I have big expectations for the vote. I have a decent feeling that tomorrow can mark as a turning point. I know it’s just a primary, but we can send a clear and precise message by voting as many winnable Democrats into seats as possible.

We need what they call a “blue wave”. I know it’s already begun, with Moore being beat in Alabama, the lady in the East Coast who ran her campaign pretty much by herself winning(Ocasio-Cortez I believe her name is), some transgender people winning elections, non white people and women winning seats, it’s already started. Now, we need to keep it going. It is so important to send a message to those monsters who think they are running the country right now. We need to let them know that they can’t cheat their way to wins anymore. We need to let them know they we won’t tolerate their racism and bull shit anymore. We need to let our voices be heard.

This is our chance to really put an enormous embarrassment to that racist, fascist, misogynist pig that is currently in office. We need to let all the people they are complicit with him, his underlings, know they cannot bully us anymore. We need to show them that, just because they have a ton of money, they don’t control us, we control them. They work for us, and I’m done letting them push me around. I’m ready to start digging their political grave. I’m ready to let them know that they are not my representatives. I’m ready to continue the fight.

That can all start tomorrow.

Get out and vote. Let your voice be heard. Let them know you’re done being pushed around. And for those people out there that are still somehow on the fence, Bernie bros I’m talking to you, and I was once one of you, don’t waste your vote this time. And please, don’t just sit home and not vote. We all saw what happens when you do that. We now have a horrific monster that thinks he is running the country. He’s an embarrassment, and to all the people that didn’t vote, or just decided to vote for a third, fourth and fifth party, please don’t do that again, for the fate of our country. I know, you can do whatever you want with your vote, but, look around you, we live in a nightmare. Please do the right thing.

Let’s get these asshole racists out of office. Let’s send a loud message. Let’s go out in droves and do this thing. Please, I implore you, go out and vote tomorrow. The future depends on it. Let’s flip the senate and the house. We can do it. Better yet, we NEED to do it. Please vote.
