Thoughts on Bill Belichick Going to UNC

I was on vacation with my wife last week and my son texted me something that truly shocked me. I was hanging out by a pool and I audibly gasped when I read what he sent. I also didn't fully believe him at first. The text read, "Bill Belichick just signed to be the next head coach for UNC!".

I was floored. I had to check some reputable sites, nothing against my kid, but he's 12, he has said lots of stuff that wasn't true. But he was correct. Bill Belichick is returning to coach football, and he isn't doing it in the NFL or at a big time power 5 school. He is going to coach UNC, who was like 6-6 or 7-5 this season. They gave up 70 plus points to James Madison. The entire staff is going to be new. I'm sure a good portion of the kids will transfer. I wouldn't be surprised if they had a season not too dissimilar to this past Michigan season.

I don't know how Bill Belichick is going to deal with or like coaching college football. I don't know that he has coached in college before. I only remember him as an NFL head coach, and a quite successful one at that. Bill Belichick knows football. There's no denying that fact. He has won multiple Super Bowls. He has helped to guide stifling defenses. He knows how to use what he has in the best possible way. He knows when to cut the fat and he doesn't let feelings get involved. He knows this sport inside and out. But college is a whole other animal. I mean, recruiting is a year round thing. Bill Belichick is going to have to go into an 18 year olds living room and sell this kid on UNC football. That is tough for anyone.

Also, Belichick is 72 years old. I mean, I cannot imagine traveling all over the country trying to sell your program is fun for anyone. College football coaches are getting younger too. I had a conversation with my son recently about that very topic. Jim Harbaugh left because he wanted to coach in the NFL. He was also sick and tired of dealing with the NCAA and all their nonsense. Nick Saban left Alabama last year and made a statement along the lines of he disliked how much the college game had changed. When you look at most college coaches, they seem to be not much older than 50. University of Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz is 41. Florida coach Billy Napier is 44. Tennessee coach Josh Heupel is 46. Georgia coach Kirby Smart is 48. Ryan Day is 45. PJ Fleck is 44. Lincoln Riley is 41. Sherrone Moore is 39. Dan Lanning is 38. In the ACC Cal coach Justin Wilcox is 48. Dabo Swinney is 58. Manny Diaz is 50. Mario Cristobal is 54. And Fran Brown is 42. Bill Belichick is nearly 30 years older than some of these guys. Hell, he is getting close to being 40 years older than some of these guys. College football, as far as recruiting and dealing with the NIL, is becoming a young guys game.

I feel like Belichick, with all of his knowledge, is going to find that coaching college football is way tougher than he thinks. And, as I said above, he is coaching at UNC. UNC is a basketball school through and through. It always has been, probably always will be. They have had some seasons that are solid, but they haven't been a CFP contender yet. They have a ton of preseason hype usually, but that doesn't seem to translate on the field. Belichek is also very old school. He's going to assume that he is the man in charge and the leader. That may have been the case in the 80's and 90's, but not anymore. As it should be, player empowerment is a real and viable thing. These kids know their worth and they aren't shy about letting everyone know. Kids aren't going to go play for Bill Belichick just because he is Bill Belichick. They are going to want playing time and solid NIL deals. They are going to want tv coverage. They are going to want awards. The coach is just a dude now. They teach the game and help mold these kids into pros in some cases. But, the coach doesn't have the power that they used to. Again, not many people know more about football than Bill Belichick. He has a wealth of knowledge. Teaching the game to his players won't be the issue. I think he will find it much more difficult to recruit and have to be on 365 days a year.

Time will tell, but this is a weird move from him. We will see how it turns out.

2024 Year in Review: Best Podcasts

Today is the final day of my 2024 best of lists. I have my top five podcasts/podcast episodes of the year. I’m all in on podcasts. I enjoy making them and listening to them. They comfort me and make my workouts fly by. I still listen to music more, but podcasts are gaining ground fast.

At number 5 I have “How Did This Get Made” covering “The Happening”. I vividly remember seeing this movie in the theaters and being utterly confused. At the time the only person I could talk to about how insane this movie is was my wife. She saw it with me and we were both dumbfounded. So it was nice to hear Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael and Jason Mantzoukas also talk about how nuts this movie was. It made me feel less insane. These people are in the industry, so I liked hearing their inside baseball talk on this incoherent movie. All three of them also happen to be hilarious, so hearing an intelligent and very funny conversation about a terrible movie made the listening experience that much better. I implore you, if you’ve been unfortunate enough to see “The Happening”, and you want to feel better about it, listen to this episode of “HDTGM”. You’ll feel way better.

At number 4 I have “Comedy Bang! Bang!” returning to hell house for their Halloween episode. It’s felt like years since they’ve done this. This used to be an episode I waited for every year, but they decided to take a break. But, coming back this year was well worth the wait. Aukerman was on point, as always, as the host. He led us all perfectly the whole time. Jimmy Pardo was an excellent guest to have for this one in particular. He’s the perfect foil. Jon Daly was good as always. Ben Rodgers is one of the funnier improvisers on the planet. But this was all leading to Nick Wiger singing his classic version of the “Monster Mash” as Leo Karpatze. His version is filthy and Wiger goes all in while singing the song. I enjoyed the long walk they took to get to the song because the payoff was tremendous. I hope “CBB” continues to do this every Halloween.

At number 3 I have “The Seth Myers and Lonely Island” podcast. This is the perfect “SNL” throwback show for me. I was all in on “SNL” when The Lonely Island was new and Seth Myers was one of the head writers. In this show they go back and talk about the digital shorts, which are some of the best things to ever come from “SNL”. Seth Myers convincing Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaefer was a triumph unlike any other. I love hearing the four of them go back and reminisce over some of the best stuff “SNL” has been a part of. I love hearing the process and how everything came together. It’s also pretty cool when they get their friends to leave voice notes about their time doing a digital short. I love this podcast and I cannot wait to hear more and more.

At number 2 I got to see “CBB” live on tour this year. It was awesome. “CBB”, by a wide margin, is my favorite podcast. It’s on this list twice. The live show was during the first part of the tour. I think it was the fourth or fifth show of the year. It was great, as I hoped. Aukerman did his thing as well as he always does. Paul F Tompkins was second to the stage and he played his Irish priest character that I adore. Lily Sullivan was next, my first time seeing her live, as her Australian counterpart. She’s even funnier live. She’s a damn good improviser. Connor Ratliff was a famous donkey from Missouri that I had never heard of. He was the highlight of the night for me. Carl Tart, one of the best, was the Pine Sol lady. This is a classic “CBB” character he created years ago, and it was rad to see him do it live. And Will Hines was last to the stage as a futuristic traveler which the whole panel gave a hard time. It was a great, jam packed show that nearly pushed two hours. I wanted even more. It was a fantastic live show.

At number 1 I have “Doughboys” doing their Munch Madness tournament centered around Taco Bell. Mike Mitchell and Nick Wiger are a perfect representation of opposites attract. Their back and forth makes this podcast one of the best out there. And to hear them talk about a place they love dearly, Taco Bell, made the month of March some of the best listening of the year. The fights were outrageous and hilarious. Getting their friends to come on and side with them made for great radio. The live finale was one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard on a podcast. The fight between Mitch and Wiger over the winner was incredible and it was blending into later episodes. These two, and their guests know so much about Taco Bell so I trusted their thoughts on the food. I don’t like Taco Bell myself, but it was fascinating to hear all these people who love it fight and argue and yell at one another about certain menu items. It was also downright hilarious. “Doughboys” always seems to say they have a bad podcast, but that’s not true, and especially not true when it comes to Munch Madness from this past year. It was a great collection of seven or eight episodes of my favorite listening in all of 2024.

2024 Year in Review: Top Sports Moments

Welcome to day four of my best of 2024 lists. Today is sports. This is probably my favorite one to write, especially when Michigan football is doing good things. It’s not all Michigan football, but my top two moments definitely revolve around them. Sports is a way of life for me, and I truly love watching, writing and talking about them. On to my list.

At number 5 I
have the Paris Olympics. The Olympics were fun this year. The basketball, more on that in a minute, was excellent as always. But, I found myself watching more and more of the games. I always say I’m not going to do that, but this year was different for me. I got really into badminton for a day. I was watching it for fun, but then I found myself rooting for certain teams. I was making wild claims about what the teams should be doing. I was all in. It was rad. I got into the skateboarding. I was enjoying a good portion of track and field. I extensively watched hoops. These Olympics were probably the most I’ve ever tuned in and really enjoyed the games. They were a blast.

At number 4, I have the men’s gold medal basketball game between France and team USA. This was one of the better basketball games I’ve seen in a long time. I almost put the Serbia-USA game here, but that didn’t have the stakes this game had. This was back and forth. This game was France announcing themselves as a true threat in 2028. This was Victor Webanyama letting the world know how good he truly can be. This was Garschon Yabusele letting everyone know he was NBA ready. This was LeBron James reminding the world his greatness. This was Devin Booker shoehorning his way into superstar conversations. But, this was all about Stephen Curry showing the world what makes him so great. He seemingly couldn’t miss. When he hit his fourth three in a row, my son and I both audibly gasped. We couldn’t believe what we were watching. It was amazing. It was also the last time, in my opinion, that we will see the USA as the basketball favorite in the Olympics. This game was amazing, and it was even better to watch in real time.

At number 3 I have the rise of Victor Webanyama. He was the presumed number 1 pick in his NBA draft, and he went number 1. His defense was supposed to be ahead of his offense, and it was, only for a bit. His offensive game got better and better as the year went on. He’s a 7’4 unicorn. He can play in the paint, but he’s also a legit three point shooter. His defense is incredible. His limbs are so long that he can get faked and still make a block or contest a shot. It’s amazing to see. He can dribble the ball up the court. He’s getting an edge that’s only going to make him better. He’s getting bigger. And he’s very young. The NBA is in a good spot for post LeBron games, because Victor Webanyama seems to be as advertised. I implore you to watch him play if you haven’t yet. There’s no one else like him in basketball.

Now for my Michigan football love.

At number 2 is my most recent 2024 event, a 6-5 Michigan team, as a 20 point underdog, going into Columbus and beating the second ranked university of Ohio State. This was so unexpected and so glorious. Michigan had a bad year. They looked over their heads and confused most of the season. I saw them live and it was just as bad in person. Outside of a few dudes from last year’s title team, this was an entire new team with limited reps as starters. The university of Ohio State, on the other hand was great. They were 10-1. They had the best roster money could buy. They dug deep into their NIL budget to make this team unbeatable. And they held onto to that, minus the Oregon game, which they still almost won. This was supposed to be a blowout. In 2019 Ryan Day said he was “going to hang 100” on Michigan, and I thought this may be the year it happens. But, much to my delight, Day and Chip Kelly decided they had to show how “tough” their team can be. They kept trying to run the ball up the middle, the strength of Michigan’s defense. It was bottled up all afternoon. When they would throw, they gashed Michigan's secondary. But, they had some score to fill, so they went away from that and back to running, which only helped Michigan stay in this game.  As the game progressed I couldn’t believe it was close. Late in the fourth quarter, tied at 10-10, I looked at my dad and said, “imagine if this Michigan team wins today”. Michigan QB Davis Warren proceeded to throw a terrible goal line interception after that. But the university of Ohio State decided to try and prove their toughness yet again and Michigan got the ball back with solid field position. They then kept getting first downs, only by running the ball, and marched down near the goal line again. They bled the clock down to 40 seconds and Dominic Zvada kicked a chip shot field goal for a 13-10 lead. Michigan kicked off, and four plays and one yard gained later, Michigan did it. They won this game. As improbable as it seemed that morning, they pulled off the victory. There was the melee with the flag at the end of the game, but even that didn’t deter my excitement. As frustrating as this season was, this team showed grit and determination and toughness and beat a much better team by playing hungrier, angrier and tougher. This season was a success due to this one win. It was glorious.

Nothing will top my number 1 sports moment of 2024, unless they do it again in my lifetime. That’s last year’s Michigan football team beating Alabama in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day and then winning the title a little over a week later. The 23-24 Michigan football team season was tremendous to watch. That defense was incredible. It may be one of the best defenses college football has ever seen. They had studs everywhere and they had great coaches teaching them the game. The offense was rough, rugged and nasty. They could also throw the ball around if the needed to. The O line was stout. JJ McCarthy was a good game manager who had the tools to improvise. Blake Corum is one of the greatest running backs Michigan has ever had. Colston Loveland and AJ Barner were a great tight end duo. And Roman Wilson was consistent and dependable and Cornelius Johnson was a great deep threat. This team was loaded and locked in all year. Even with the nonsensical sign stealing allegations, this team never stopped winning games and blowing opponents out. If an opposing coach called them out, they beat that team even worse. This team rode for each other and the coaches and it showed on and off the field. Their closest game was the university of Ohio State game, but the Rose Bowl versus Alabama was much more nerve wracking. They then went into National Title game and beat Washington, the only other undefeated team last season, and beat them by 21 points. This was a “team of destiny”. I didn’t fully appreciate them until after the title, but now I’m so grateful for everything the 23-24 Michigan team gave the fans. They won every game and won them all in style. They took on the villain role. They embraced and reveled in the hate. And as a fan it was wonderful to see. I always want Michigan to blow everyone out so I can relax during the games, and that’s what they did all the way to the title. I will always remember this and savor it. It is my proudest moment as a sports fan and that Michigan team will go down in history. Go Blue.

2024 Year in Review: Best Television Shows

Welcome to day three of my best of 2024 lists. Today I come to you with my top five tv shows of 2024. TV is in a good spot where we sit right now. There’s tons of content. Too much of you ask me. But, a good amount of tv shows out there are critically acclaimed and fun to watch. A few shows I watch but didn’t make my list are, the final season of “What We Do in the Shadows” and season 4 of “Only Murders in the Building”. I adore both these shows, but for varying reasons, they didn’t make my list. Oh also don’t watch a ton of the super critical darling shows. I’ve never seen “Succession”. I have zero interest in “Industry”. Those shows aren’t for me. But, I do have a top five for 2024, and I’m very much in on all five of these shows.

Coming in at number 5 I have “KAOS”. I read all the reviews, I saw that critics kind of panned the show, but I was still intrigued. I am a fan of shows that take mythological people and put them in real life situations. Those shows speak to me. And “KAOS” excelled in this for me. Jeff Goldblum is magnetic as Zeus. I couldn’t get enough of him. But it was everyone around him really doing a good job. The writers of this show took on these Greek characters and really made an interesting eight episode arc for all of them. I don’t usually binge stuff, but I finished this show in three days. An episode would end and I wanted more. I’m bummed it got cancelled. They could’ve taken this concept in many other direction. Go seek out this show. It’s very well made.

At number 4 I have season 3 of “The Bear”. “The Bear” continues to be one of the best written and best acted shows on all of tv. It’s endlessly rewatchable. I really enjoyed the whole arc of this season. Seeing them open the restaurant and all the stress that comes from that was great. This season was funnier than the first two. John Cena showing up had me cracking up. Ayo Edibiri is continuing to shine and getting more work, which is much deserved. Jeremy Allen White is rightfully award nominated again. I could say the same with Ebon Moss Bacharach. But Abby Elliot truly shined this season. She did some amazing work. I know some people were down on this season, I was not. I will continue to watch and I’m sure it will continue to be great.

At number 3 I have “Fallout”. I knew nothing of this show when it was first on Amazon. It wasn’t until RD told me to check it out that it popped on my radar. I also didn’t know until a few episodes in that it was based on a video game. None of that mattered when I started to watch. This show is really good. It’s bleak and depressing, but in the correct ways. It’s not very uplifting, but when it is, it hits. Ella Purnell is exceptional as the lead. Walton Goggins plays The Ghoul, who is now one of my all time favorite characters. Kyle McLachlan and Johnny Pemberton excel. Everyone is wonderful. I also like the world that the show has used from the game. It feels like a likely outcome if this happened to the world. And the finale has me super hyped for season 2. I’m glad RD told me about this show because I don’t think I would have watched otherwise. This show is awesome.

At number 2 I have “The Penguin”. This is another one that RD asked about and I started watching after his take. I trust RD’s recommendations. “The Penguin” is brutal. There’s no respite. There may be minor moments here and there that take a small break, but this show is bleak. Collin Ferrell is Oz. He is unrecognizable. His accent is spot on. He walks like an actual penguin. I’m very impressed with his performance here. Cristin Milioti is even better. She is ruthless, but I’m on her side. I get why she’s doing what she’s doing. And she is absolutely dynamic here. This show is a masterclass from these two actors. And if you have any issues with superhero or MCU/DCU fatigue, this is not a show that’s superhero focused. This is a gritty crime drama. It’s a mafia story, and a well done mafia story. It’s disturbing and upsetting, but it’s also damn good.

Finally, at number 1 I have the final season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm”. I mean, what else would I pick? “Curb” may be the greatest comedy tv show ever, and they went out on top. Larry David heard all the criticism for the “Seinfeld” finale, and he redid it and redid it better. This season was leading up to a finale that was going to end up with David in jail, and it did, but he did so much more with it on the way there. The hair dye episode is a classic. The fame that Maria Sofia has gained was tremendous. The Aunty Ray stuff made me smile. The episode with the guy from “District 9” and “Chappie” should be studied by do day writers looking to make cringe comedy. Anytime David interacted with Ted Danson or Susie, it was as funny as ever. “Curb” is an achievement in comedy writing and I’m going to sorely miss it. But this final season was perfect and will go down as one of the best final tv seasons of all time. It’s a gem.

2024 Year in Review: Best Music

Today I come to you with my top five albums/music moments from 2024. I love music, listening to it, seeing it live and chatting with friends about it. I am getting older, and some of the new, well loved artists have no bearing on me. I like what I like, I will try some recommendations, but I listen to the stuff that I have always listened to. That's the way it is. I will say, and this isn't part of my top five, I have grown to enjoy Taylor Swift's catalog, I like listening to Olivia Rodrigo and Chappel Roan makes me want to dance. I have to imagine this is due to having a nine year old daughter that is just now getting into music. I just wanted to put that out there. Now, onto the list.

At number 5 I have my first live experience of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. I have heard so many people talk about this group. I have read a ton about this group. I have read about how prolific they are, putting out dozens of records in short periods of time. But I just figured they were a jam band thing that I had outgrown. I was very, very wrong. My buddy had an extra ticket when they were in Saint Louis and offered it to me. I wanted to see what the fuss was all about, so I happily accepted the ticket. It helps that my buddy is such a big fan, but what I saw unfold for the next two and a half hours was rad. They started off with some of their metal music. And from there on out I heard metal, rock, electronic, new wave and even songs that used a gong heavily. I was taken aback at how well, how proficient they played and sang. These dudes are true pros and seeing them live was exceptional. I immediately started listening to as much of their catalog as I could and am still listening to them today. King Gizzard is worth the hype and then some, and my fandom started this past summer when I saw them live.

At number 4 I have Kirk introducing me to Califone. I had no idea who or what this band was when Kirk texted me and asked if I wanted to go to a show of theirs. I told him I hadn't heard of them, but to let me listen and I'd get back to him. He agreed, but told me to answer quickly. I guess the show he was talking about was in a person's basement in town and they were only selling 50 tickets. I went to Spotify and turned the music on right away. I was hooked. Califone is folky with some experimental stuff. I love the lead singer's voice. I like how mellow the music sounds. I also like how loud it can get with only an acoustic guitar. After hearing one song I told Kirk I was in for the show. The show was even better than just listening in my car. I had never seen a show like this before. It was intimate and personal. Califone had two members performing and they were great. The banter in between songs was awesome. We were asked how everything sounded. It felt like we had a say, and that made the night even more fun. I'm still listening to Califone to this day and have even checked out some of the band members' side projects. Now to the albums.

At number 3 I have Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds "Wild God". This record is classic Nick Cave. Cave tells a story with his song lyrics. He paints a picture. I love his voice bringing these stories to life. The Bad Seeds are a perfect backing band for all the things Nick Cave wants to do. When an artist like him and his band comes out with a new record, and it hits as well as this one does, that makes me smile so much. It is nice and refreshing to someone of Cave's ability and longevity still making new, awesome music that reminds us all of what makes them so great.

At number 2 I have Kendrick Lamar's "GNX". I mean, Kendrick cannot miss at the moment. He is on a heater like we've never seen before. He crushed his rap beef this summer. His songs from said beef were played over and over again. His music videos were rad as well. Kendrick Lamar didn't have to do anything else and he would've owned the year in music. But, much to my delight, he gave us a full length record that is as good as most of his stuff. This album has no skippable tracks in my opinion. Kendrick Lamar has a lot to say and I love that he is recording it all for us to hear. I'm stoked that he will be touring this summer with SZA and that they are making a stop in STL. "GNX" has just about everything I enjoy from Kendrick Lamar and I cannot wait to hear these songs live.

And at number 1 for 2024 in music I have Tyler, the Creator's "Chromakopia". This record is damn near perfect. And I mean everything about it. The lead up had me, and everyone else for that matter, super hype. There were theories and posts online about all the early buzz and videos. Releasing a song like "Noid", with one of the best music videos in a long long time was perfect. That made everyone clamor for the record even more. Releasing it on a Monday as opposed to a Friday was genius. The free shows that Tyler, the Creator was doing made it all the more intriguing. By the time the record came out, I would've been happy with pretty much anything. Lucky for me and everyone else, the record is incredible. Tyler, the Creator keeps trying new things and it's working. He's showing us his growth as an artist. His music has gotten better and better. He knows how to produce and rap over perfect beats he's made for himself. His features are second to none. His shows are a blast and look incredible on screen. "Chromakopia" has wonderful relistening ability. This is just a perfect record for my fandom in music.

2024 Year in Review: Best Movies

This week I'll be doing my best of 2024 lists. I enjoy doing these and I like to do them right before the holidays. Just like years past, I'll do my top five movies, tv shows, music, sports moments and podcasts/podcast episodes. Let us tarry no longer. I'm going to start the week with my top five movies of the year. I have not seen every movie I intended to see in 2024. That means movies like "Anora" or "Y2K" are not on my list because I have yet to find the time to watch them. I also want to see many more movies that came out, but I forgot or the timing never really worked out for me. But, I think I paired my list down pretty well and the five movies I picked were the best, in my opinion, that I watched in 2024.

Coming in at number 5 I have "Self Reliance". This was a movie I watched by chance. I was listening to a podcast that Jake Johnson was on and he was promoting this movie. I like his work. He said that Anna Kendrick was involved, as was Andy Samberg, playing himself. Both of those added to my curiosity. It was streaming on hulu, and after the podcast episode I turned the movie on. I really enjoyed what I saw. "Self Reliance" is a movie where a guy has a chance to win a big sum of money if he can avoid being assasinated for a certain amount of time. All he has to do is constantly have someone by his side, and the people out to get him cannot go after him. Along the way there's twists and turns that make this movie even better. I found myself rooting for Johnson's character. I wanted to know more about why Anna Kendrick was so willing to help. I liked the whole Andy Samberg of it all. This was a cool, unique idea of a movie with a stellar cast. It was well written, only 90 minutes long and totally paid off. I think everyone should seek this movie out so more movies like this can be made in the future.

At number 4 I have "Deadpool and Wolverine". I have grown weary of timelines and superhero stuff, but this movie did it right. The right jokes were made. The right timeline was picked. It was a great vehicle for the superheroes involved. Ryan Reynolds understands Deadpool and knows how to write and play him onscreen. Hugh Jackman is Wolverine, and this version has been my absolute favorite to this point. To get X-23, Blade, Elektra and Gambit involved was perfect. I enjoyed Chris Evans in this movie. The villain was mean and nasty, but also understandable. I knew why she was doing what she was doing. It made sense to me. This movie is fun, vulgar, hyper violent and one of the bloodiest movies I've ever seen. It was also a blast to watch.

At number 3 I have "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga". RD and I debated about this movie to no end. I loved it, but said it wasn't as good as "Fury Road", which I personally think may be the best movie ever made. He consistently told me it was a totally different movie. I get that. Anyway, "Furiosa" is grimy and gritty in all the right ways. To see the world created that we all know from "Mad Max" was incredible. Chris Hemsworth played an excellent villain. Anya Taylor Joy was magnetic as Furiosa. I loved the origin story and getting to finally see why Furiosa was at Immortan Joe's camp. I found this movie enthralling and dynamic. George Miller made a colorful yet gritty movie work to perfection.

At number 2 I have "Dune:Part 2". Denis Villenuve knows how to make the seemingly unmakeable movie. He has adapted the "Dune" books into something that is not only watchable, but fantastic and easy to understand. Timothee Chalamet is wonderful as Paul Atriedes. Rebecca Ferguson has embodied his mom and preacher of what she considers the gospel. Zendaya is remarkable. She absolutely crushes her role. Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin bring mild comedic elements to this dreary world. The sandworms look real. The battle scenes are epic and beautifully shot. "Dune:Part 2" has one of the best shifts in tone and color when we see where the Harkonnens live and fight and plot. There are no notes for this movie. It is damn near perfect.

At number 1 I have "The Substance". I have not seen a movie this unique, this refreshing in years. There's no other movie out there right now, or in the past decade plus for that matter, that comes close to being what "The Substance" is. Demi Moore is simply amazing as Elisabeth Sparkle. She is perfect for the role of a superstar who other people think has aged out of her fame. Margaret Qualley is just as good as the younger version of Sparkle. She takes it all in stride and is more than game for what this movie is telling the audience. Collie Farageat had an idea and went for it, hitting an absolute homerun. This movie will make you queasy. It is meant to unnerve the viewer. There are some very disturbing images. But when you let it wash over you and you allow yourself to be in for the ride, you will end up thinking about this movie over and over and over again. I've already watched it three times, and I can't wait to watch it again. I want to see more and more of what I may have missed on my first three viewings. "The Substance" is a movie that needs to be seen and then talked about. It's so damn good.

"A Real Pain": Exploring Heritage, Humor, and Heartache

Sometimes the best movie-going experiences come from taking a chance. That’s exactly how my kids and I ended up watching Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain. Instead of picking the movie first, we started by choosing the Hi Pointe Theatre, a local gem with a classic charm that reminds me of simpler times. Known for its mix of older films and thoughtfully selected new releases, it’s always a pleasure to visit. Once we settled on the Hi Pointe, we scanned the listings and landed on A Real Pain. A quick read of the synopsis sparked our interest, and the movie’s connection to Polish heritage gave it even more appeal for us. As someone who is 1/4 Polish (making my kids at least 1/8), I was curious to see how the film would handle themes tied to family roots. 

The story follows cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) as they travel to Poland to honor their grandmother. What starts as a somewhat comical road trip evolves into a poignant exploration of family, identity, and the unresolved tensions that shape who we are. I found myself relating deeply to David, particularly his frustration with Benji. On the surface, Benji comes across as the “cool guy,” exuding charm and charisma. But as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that beneath his empathetic façade lie selfish motives and trauma-induced instability. This dynamic felt strikingly familiar, highlighting the challenges of navigating relationships with people who can be both magnetic and overwhelming. 

Kieran Culkin delivers a standout performance, capturing the raw vulnerability of Benji’s character. Watching his interactions with Eisenberg’s David was a rollercoaster—hilarious in one moment and emotionally intense the next. Their dynamic reminded me of the complexity of family relationships, where love and exasperation often go hand in hand. 

One of the film’s strengths is its ability to weave humor and heartfelt moments seamlessly. It had us laughing one minute and reflecting on family bonds the next. The Polish backdrop added another layer of depth for me. Seeing the characters confront their heritage and shared history made me think about my own roots and the connections that tie us to the past. 

The intimate, nostalgic setting of the Hi Pointe Theatre made the experience even more special. Watching a film with this kind of emotional weight in a theater steeped in history enhanced its impact. It reminded me of the simple joy of sitting down with my kids and getting lost in a story together. 

Final Thoughts: 

A Real Pain is a film that resonates on multiple levels. From its humor to its heartfelt exploration of family and heritage, it offers something meaningful for everyone. For those who enjoy stories that dig into the complexities of relationships while still finding moments of levity, this movie is a 

must-watch. And if you’re lucky enough to catch it at a theater like the Hi Pointe, you’ll find the experience even more memorable.

Thoughts on Who Should, and Will, Win the Heisman Trophy

The Heisman trophy will be awarded to the winner next week. There seem to be about four or five dudes up for consideration. If you want the names, Travis Hunter, Ashton Jeanty, Cam Ward and Dillon Gabriel are the four I'd invite to New York. But, in all reality this is down to two dudes.

The Heisman will be given to either Jeanty or Hunter. My son has pleaded his case for Cam Ward, who has had a great season. But, I just don't see it. He hasn't been as good as Hunter or Jeanty. Dillon Gabriel, my preseason pick for the award, has also been good. But, of the four guys I mentioned for invites, he'd finish fourth overall in my voting. He has been great too, but not out of this world. Hunter and Jeanty are crushing it this season. They're the focal points of two teams that have had a resurgent season.

Ashton Jeanty is the main threat for Boise State, who will, most likely, be in the playoffs this season. Jeanty has also been putting up video game numbers. He has carried the ball 312 times for 2,288 yards and 28 tds. He also has 18 catches for 102 yards and a td. Those numbers are good for 26 carries a game, 190 rushing yards a game and over 2 rushing tds a game. That is insane. He is cruising his way through the Mountain West Conference. In BSU's lone defeat this season, against number 1 Oregon, Jeanty went for 192 rush yards and 3 tds. That is pretty amazing against a solid defense. He has gone over 200 yards rushing four times this season, all wins. He ran for six tds in their opening win over Georgia Southern. The only game he didn't score in, a big time win over Portland State, he only played one half, where he carried the ball 11 times for 127 times. That's an average of 11.2 per carry. A first down per each carry. That is wild. Jeanty has all the stats, the playoff appearance and a good portion of the media behind him right now, and I wouldn't be upset at all if he won.

Travis Hunter is doing things that seem impossible in modern college football. He is the Shohei Ohtani of college football. Travis Hunter starts on both sides of the ball. And it isn't like some cutesy offensive packages, he is one of Colorado's top receiving options. He is a legit number 1 or number 2 option for their offense. He is also, quite possibly, the best corner in all of college football. He is lockdown. We don't hear his name too much and that is the biggest compliment you can give a corner. That means he is covering his guy so well that the opposing QB will not throw his way. And when they do, he seems to make incredible interceptions. On the season Hunter, as a wideout, has 92 catches for 1,152 receiving yards and 14 tds. That's good for 7 catches a game, 96 receiving yards and game and just over 1 receiving td a game. That is top notch for any power 5 wideout. He also has 31 tackles, 4 interceptions and 1 forced fumble as a corner. Again, that would be great stats for a guy that just plays defense. Hunter averages 114 plays per game. That is the amount of plays in most college football games. That means he never comes off the field. Hunter is always there and he is always producing. He is putting up crazy good numbers on both sides of the ball. Those stats, had he been a one way player, wouldn't be good enough for Heisman consideration, but he would be up for other postseason awards. The fact that he is doing this, in high level division 1 college football, is unheard of.

Hunter is going to be the first overall pick in next season's NFL draft. He may damn well play both sides of the ball in the NFL too. I also believe he should, and will, win the Heisman next weekend. Travis Hunter is an amazing football player, playing both sides of the ball, and he has done more than enough to win the Heisman. Hunter is my pick.

Eggnog Needs Coffee

Earlier today I was out for coffee with my dad and my buddy. We do this once a week together. I love these hangouts. They're good for catching up and having delicious coffee drinks.

The two people I normally go with get Americanos. They like straight up coffee. They don't want anything added to it. The more like coffee it tastes, the better for them. I like to try a bunch of different coffee drinks. I am enamored with espresso tonics right now. They're the best in my opinion. I like how refreshing they taste, and they have a good caffeine boost. But, it's pretty cold here in St Louis right now. We got snow over the weekend and it has stuck to the ground. That means it's quite chilly. I love this weather, but this weather means that iced coffee isn't always the best option. Today I got a hot drink.

We went to a local spot called Shaw's, my dad's favorite, and he and Kirk got their Americanos. I decided to look at the menu a bit. They have their holiday specials going on right now, and I wanted a warm and sweet holiday drink today. As I perused the menu, I kept coming back to the eggnog latte. The other drinks sounded good, but the eggnog one was calling my name. I ordered it and it was fantastic. It wasn't overly sweet. I could taste the eggnog and cinnamon. The coffee was piping hot and it hit the spot.

As I was drinking it and the three of us were chatting, I made the declaration that, even though the drink was excellent, I do not like eggnog unless it is used as a creamer for coffee. Eggnog, for me, is too creamy and gloopy. It has an odd taste when served over ice. I have never had the alcoholic version of it because I don't drink, but I know plenty of people who like it, and I have to assume the NA version tastes very much the same. But, there's something intriguing to me about using it in coffee as opposed to cream and Splenda. As much as I enjoy cream and Splenda, it can be monotonous. It all begins to taste the same. Even if I brew flavored ground coffee, the taste all melds together. So changing things up from time to time is nice and needed. Adding eggnog to the latte was the perfect change of pace. The creaminess really elevated the coffee. The cinnamon gave it a small bite that I enjoyed. Whatever other flavors they put in eggnog, it all worked really well. Like I said, I enjoy sweet, hot coffee. But this was the right amount of sweet. It can be too much if it's too sweet. I see people putting all types of stuff in their coffee drinks that it fails to be coffee in the end. I watched a Dunkin employee the other day put double digit pumps of sweetener in a customer's coffee. It looked like chocolate milk as opposed to coffee. That wasn't the case with this eggnog latte.

I think I'm going to try and recreate this drink as best I can at home. This drink was so good that I'm going to go and buy NA eggnog from my store to make more at home. So, while I won't drink eggnog on its own, it is going to become a creamer in my coffee for the foreseeable future.

The Greatest The Game

Let’s talk about last Saturday’s Michigan Ohio State game.

After I got home from my race Saturday afternoon, and my dad arrived at my house, we settled in and watched the recording of the university of Ohio State and Michigan football game. Neither of us knew the outcome, nor the score at the time, so we went in totally fresh. What my dad and I watched unfold was pretty epic and inconceivable to the both of us.

This has been an incredibly frustrating year to be a Michigan football fan. I know, they were coming off an undefeated season that ended in a national title win. It was great. This year was a year of newness and head scratching. They had no QB. Their best defender missed most of the season. The o-line was not playing to their wild expectations. The receivers couldn't get separation. Donovan Edwards was replaced by Kalel Mullings. The defense had some questionable play calling. It was a mess and a work in progress. When I saw them play live over a month ago, it looked as bad in person as it did on the tv. After that Illinois-Michigan game, I thought they may finish 6-6 at best. They played Indiana close, which was nice to see, but they went into their second bye week at 5-5. I didn't know if they'd win another game. They went into the Northwestern game and demolished them. It was such a nice surprise to see them go out and dominate a team like they're supposed to. They ran up and down the field. The QB play was sufficient. The defense was suffocating. It was a sight for sore eyes.

Going into the university of Ohio State game, I had zero expectations. The university of Ohio State, on paper, is a much better team. They played Oregon close, in Eugene, and that same Oregon squad crushed Michigan in Ann Arbor. They throttled Indiana. They kind of, outside of Oregon, made lightwork of every team that was on their schedule. Michigan, on the other hand, really struggled all season long, until the Northwestern game. Fresno State stayed with them all game. They gave up 15 fourth quarter points to Arkansas State. Texas smacked them. So did Illinois and, as previously mentioned, Oregon. Michigan looked like a team that wasn't really prepared to play all year. But, I have to bring it up again, the Northwestern game showed me something different. They did what they wanted to do when they wanted to do it and they looked good while doing it. But I still expected them to get walloped on Saturday. The university of Ohio State was supposed to unleash three years of frustration and prove that Michigan wasn't going to be able to push them around anymore. Ryan Day said, in 2019, that he was "going to hang 100 on them", and I kind of expected that type of game on Saturday.

That didn't happen at all. Michigan was able to run on this supposed vaunted defense. Kalel Mullings fully took control of Michigan's ground game after Donovan Edwards got hurt. Davis Warren, well, he looked like a walk on. He had a bad, bad game. But that didn't matter. If the offense went three and out, the defense held firm. The Michigan defense was lights out on Saturday. They played their best game of the season and looked pretty damn good doing it. Early on in the game, with Michigan down 3-0, the university of Ohio State decided to throw on third and long from their endzone. Aamir Hall read it beautifully and picked the pass off with ease, setting up Michigan's first TD and lead of the game. The defense continued to dominate, but the university of Ohio State's play calling was bizarre. They kept trying to run the ball up the gut, playing right into Michigan's strength on defense. They have been great against the run all year. But, as I said to my dad at one point of the game, it felt like the university of Ohio State offensive plan was to prove how "tough" they could be. It didn't work, but they kept trying it. Over and over again they would run it two, sometimes three times during a drive, only to have to punt or try a field goal. And the field goal kicker missed two gimmes, which was brutal for that guy. But the sheer fact that they kept trying to run the ball, to no avail, was astonishing. The passing game was working like gangbusters, but they didn't stick with it and that helped Michigan. The hubris of the university of Ohio State, to continue to try and prove their "toughness" was the absolute wrong way to go about this game. Late in the fourth, tied at 10, the university of Ohio State had to give up the ball after yet another three and out and Michigan held onto the damn thing for the majority of the quarter. They drove it down inside the 5, after a brilliant Mullings run on third and 6. They made the university of Ohio State use all its timeouts, and with about 45 seconds left, Michigan kicker Dominic Zvada kicked a 20 yarder to take the lead. The university of Ohio State got the ball back with about 30 seconds left, and proceeded to call four pass plays that gained them a total of one yard. When the fourth and 9 pass fell to the turf, and it was known that Michigan was going to win for a fourth year in a row,

I gave out a guttural yell. I couldn't believe that this Michigan team, this 6-5 team with no real QB, two of their best players out, a coaching staff still figuring it all out and their best secondary player not covering superstar wideouts was able to pull off this upset, it was incredible. I loved all the congratulatory texts I was getting. I loved reading about the game online afterward. I loved seeing those crybabies show more fight after the game, when Michigan was planting their flag, trying to fight the players planting the flag. That shows how classless those players and that staff really are. There is no institutional control. Ryan Day is a coward and the biggest crybaby of them all. Their team captain telling Michigan that their "season is over", shows how little sportsmanship they have in Columbus. I want to inject Will Howard's crying speech into my veins. This dude has been popping off at the mouth all season, and being a Michigan fanatic, seeing him crying on national tv was glorious.

I cannot stop reading about this game. I want more and more and more of this. There's no more excuses. The university of Ohio State cannot blame signs, the flu, the cold, the Michigan staff, Jim Harbaugh, the Big 10 or the NCAA. This is all on them. They have to bear the brunt of the last four seasons. Michigan has clearly broken that team and that staff. The university of Ohio State will be in the playoff and they could make a run. But, this 7-5 Michigan team went into Columbus, as a 20 point underdog, with almost every media talking head picking against them, and won. Michigan won The Game for the fourth year in a row and this one feels better than some of the past four seasons. This wasn't supposed to happen, but Michigan did it. I'm going to soak in this for a good long time. Always and forever, Go Blue.

Adventures with Kimchi

Let me talk to you about kimchi.

I have attempted to make kimchi a few times in my house to no avail. The first time I tried I used a recipe that said it had to be fermenting in my refrigerator for a month. I went through the process step by step, took my time and even put a sticker with the date on the mason jar. I was stoked, but I did have to wait.

One day, maybe about halfway through the month-long waiting period, my daughter went to grab something from the fridge and told me it smelled weird. I went to look thinking we had some rotten fruit or something else leaking perhaps. I searched and searched but found nothing. My wife checked as well, and she couldn't find the culprit. After a while we heard a small wheezing noise in the fridge. It was at that point that my heart sank. I knew I didn't seal the mason jar properly. That was the only thing in there that could be possibly making that noise. I grabbed the jar and that was most definitely where the sound was coming from. I, using my better judgement, took the jar outside to open it. As soon as I popped the top the cabbage and all the other ingredients exploded onto my backyard lawn. It also smelled pretty awful. Now, according to some minimal research, the smell was what it was supposed to be. Kimchi is fermented, rotten cabbage in spices. But, due to the lone fact that I didn't properly seal the jar, it was a no go on this first experiment.

I tried again a few months after I improperly closed my jar. This time I kind of winged the recipe though. I didn't have everything I needed. I assumed I could use other stuff and it would be okay, if not very similar. I cut some corners and just figured it out on the fly. I also shortened the fermenting time to two weeks. This was a no go as well. It wasn't bad, it just lacked a ton of flavor. When making kimchi you need most, if not all, of the stuff that the recipe you are using is telling you to use. You cannot skip every corner. You have to stay mostly true. Kimchi is supposed to pack a punch. It's supposed to hit you in the mouth with flavor. You want a good spice kick. This version was very bland in retrospect. I ate about half of it before I gave up and tossed it in the trash.

This afternoon I took my third attempt at making proper kimchi. I used all the ingredients except shrimp paste, which I could not find at my store. I soaked the cabbage in saltwater for about an hour. I drained it and let it dry out. I made a slurry of water and gochugaru. I used radishes, carrots, both of which I julienned. I used fresh ginger and garlic, which I minced. I cut a ton of green onions to add in place of chives. I even used fish sauce, which I was finally able to find at my grocery store today. I did the steps. I did what the recipe said. I used my hands to massage the slurry into the cabbage leaves. I did pretty much everything it said. It also said you could eat it right away, but they recommended letting it sit for 3-4 days, which I will do. I hope this one works out. It looks the best. There's no lingering smell. I was able to use a tupperware to store it. It has all the elements that typical kimchi has at other places I've had it before.

I will check it to let you all know how this one turns out. I'm optimistic that I may have finally cracked the code on kimchi. And the best part about all of this, if it works out, I'm the only one in my home who likes kimchi, so that means I get to enjoy it all. As long as it's tasty.

Drake Sucks

On this day before Thanksgiving the one thing that I want to give thanks to myself is the suspicion I always felt when listening or hearing anyone talk about Drake. Let’s discuss.

I have never been a fan. From day one his rapping felt fake. His beats felt too repetitive. He is a phony. He acts like he is some hardened dude from the street when in reality he is a suburban kid from Canada. I despised how often they'd show him at NBA games. He was always rooting for a different college basketball team, whichever team was the favorite that year, and that reminded me of a bandwagon type fan. I never got the feeling from him that he really liked rap music or appreciated what he got to do for a living. He seems to me to be more obsessed with fame than with the craft that made him famous. I have always gotten the ick from him as the kids would say. And now, and it for sure helps that I am a humongous Kendrick Lamar fan, he is doing one of the most childish things I've ever witnessed a grown adult do. Drake is suing Lamar for defamation over "Not Like Us".

This is low, even for Drake. It's upsetting because he just can't live with the fact that Kendrick Lamar crucified him with their whole "rap battle". He can't handle the fact that nearly every single person has sided with Lamar. He can't deal with it. Instead of just riding off in the distance with his W, Lamar released a whole new record that is amazing. At every turn since this whole "beef" started, Lamar has bested him. Kendrick Lamar has always been the much better rapper, but the way he has handled his dismantling of Drake has been masterful. And instead of taking it and moving on, Drake has decided he needs to file suit. This is the attitude of a pampered child who has never been told anyone is better than him. This is how suburban kids act. This is the kid taking his ball home because the people they're playing with are better than them at the game they're playing. This is a petulant child act, and it comes as no surprise to me that Drake would stoop so low. He is never going to be the artist that Lamar has become and continues to be. He is never going to be respected when people talk about all time great rappers. Hell, he'd be lucky to be included in a top 10,000 list of all time rappers. He is too busy taking selfies, showing up to Toronto Raptors games and trying to start a beef with DeMar DeRozan, who also handled Drake's childish shots with grace. He wants to be loved on Instagram instead of for his music. He wants to show off all the things he can buy because of his fame. The one thing he doesn't seem to want to do, make more music, or make even listenable music.

Drake is the phony and fake that I perceived him to be over a decade ago. I have never had any respect for him or his non rapping ability. And now to file a defamation suit against Lamar, he is making himself look worse and worse with every new move. I swear the people around him, and himself for that matter, they seem to be finding ways to make him look even softer. Drake has been beaten by Lamar with music, a mic and now with the social media crowd that Drake so craves love from. He is going to become even more of a joke. And if I were in Kendrick Lamar's shoes, I'd just keep smiling, holding on to my victory and making even more dope music. Kendrick Lamar not only won this whole thing, he wiped the floor with his weak opponent.

Mack Brown is an Old School Coach Who was Not a Fit for the Reality of College Football

Mack Brown was let go by North Carolina today. I'm not that surprised.

Mack Brown has had big preseason expectations in his return to head coaching, but UNC has not been able to live up to the hype. I feel like they, starting in his second season, were always a preseason darling, then they'd inevitably go 7-5 or 8-4. They were never a real threat in the ACC. They were surpassed by Clemson and Miami. Even Duke became more of a threat during his second tenure in Chapel Hill. He's had some solid recruits come in, most recently Drake Maye, but even they couldn't get the Tar Heels over the top. I don't think Maye was the starting QB of a team that won more than eight games.

I have to believe that the tipping point this season was when the Tar Heels gave up 70 plus points in a home game to James Madison. This is no slight to James Madison, who is a very solid division one football team, but that's a game that UNC should win, and win pretty handily. They did score 50 plus points themselves, but a lot of those points came when the game was already well out of hand. They have rebounded enough from that to be a 6-5 team, and they have a good shot to finish 7-5, ending the season against a shorthanded NC State. But, UNC has already let him go, he will coach the final regular season game, but he will not be there for the bowl game. UNC will begin searching for a head coach immediately.

All of this made me look back at Mack Brown, and I have been trying to figure out what went wrong. Brown was a very good coach back in his heyday. He was at UNC before, and he was good enough there to get the head coaching job at Texas. He had great success at Texas. He won a title. His teams competed for the Big 12 title pretty much every season he was there. He coached Vince Young, who may be the greatest college QB of all time. He coached Ricky Williams, who may be the greatest college running back of all time. This was all during the BCS era and pre NIL. This was a time where the coach of a college football team was the king. No one was above them. They called the shots and everyone did what the head coach of a major college football team asked. This new era of college football may have been too much for him. Mack Brown is an older dude, and maybe his old school mentality just doesn't fit in the modern game. When he would go to the podium for post game interviews now he would look tired and frustrated. He didn't have the easy answer like he did in the early 2000's. He would try to fit in and dance in the locker room with his players after any big win and it looked uncomfortable and awkward. He would try and sound cool and hip and it came off as phony. He didn't command the respect in a recruits home like he used to. A lot of these kids don't know much about his old Texas football teams. The game, from my perspective watching him coach these past few years, has passed him by. His defense never got better. He didn't utilize all these great weapons he had. He was not so great with the transfer portal. His teams could score, which they've always been able to, but they didn't do much else that good at all. This is like a passing of the guard in a way. There's not too many older coaches out there right now, and the ones that have stuck around, the lame ass Dabo Swinney's of the world, are getting past everyday by younger, more innovative head coaches.

Mack Brown will always have his championship and the memories of coaching Vince Young and Ricky Williams, but he is a "dinosaur" in the modern college football era and his time is done.

Ty Listens to "GNX"

Kendrick Lamar released a surprise album last week. I didn't know about this until this weekend. I was driving to a race Saturday morning and my Spotify account recommended the record for me. It's called "GNX". Since Saturday I have listened to it all the way through once, and have kind of hen and picked my way through the second time.

I like this record. Right now it isn't on the level of "Mr Morale" or "To Pimp a Butterfly" or "Damn", but those records are classics. This record probably just needs more of my time I think. With Kendrick Lamar's music, it usually takes me a few full listens of each song before I really start to get it and love it. But make no mistake, "GNX" is pretty damn wonderful. Lamar is on a heater right now with his music. He put out the record of the year last year with "Mr Morale". "TPABF" may be one of the greatest records ever made. That record is going to be studied in music classics for generations. "Damn" is what made me the big fan of his I am today. "GNX" is going to be at that level in a few weeks, if it isn't already.

Kendrick Lamar does his damn thing on this album. He is the best rapper alive, full stop. He shows that tenfold here. The way he uses words and strings them together so coherently is such an achievement. He is the best of any rappers out there right now. He's so good that he makes others, artists I've never heard of, sound great when he has them come and do a feature. There's an artist named Dody on one of his songs, and because of his one verse with Lamar, I'm going to check out Dody's other music. He has a Mexican singer intro a few songs and she knocks it out of the damn park. His collaborations with SZA have become some of my favorite songs of his. The two that they do together on this record are my favorite songs by a mile. Her voice is a perfect blend with Lamar's rap skills. He's so good now, that when he gets on a track and screams, "MUSTARDDDDDDDDDDD!", I find myself doing that on a daily basis. It's so unnecessary, but Kendrick Lamar makes it palatable and listenable. He can do no wrong for me. When he puts out new music I'm so thrilled to hear it that I carve out time for myself so I can really dive into it and hear everything he has to say. I love how he changes his voice on the new record from song to song too. Sometimes he sounds old and gruff, in a good way. Then he sounds like himself. Then he will do something totally different and I'm amazed at how well it all works. He has a 1,000 batting average right now. There's no songs that I want to skip when I go and listen. On the way to my race yesterday morning I was vibing out so hard I'm sure people in other cars thought I was nuts, and I'm fully okay with that. "GNX" is awesome. It may end up on my personal list of his classic records in due time.

I definitely recommend giving “GNX” a listen because there's no one that is on his level at the moment. No one.

The Inglorious End of the Daniel Jones Era

I saw earlier today that the Daniel Jones era with the New York Giants has officially ended. Let’s discuss.

This seems pretty harsh and fast, but not all that crazy if you look at his short lived career. Jones was never the answer with the Giants. I can remember writing about him before he was drafted. I had him firmly in my bust category. He didn't really have the juice in my opinion. He seemed slow, he wasn't very accurate and I figured the bright lights of NYC were going to be too much for him. It seems like I, along with many other writers, had him pegged perfectly. And don't let some phony stats or one playoff win fool you. He was never the reason why the Giants had any of the minimal success they had while he was the starting QB.

The Giants won during that time because they had a killer defense and Saquon Barkley. Look at how stacked the boxes were when Barkley was drafted by the Giants. The guy was facing seven and eight man boxes and he was still producing. The Giants defense during that time created turnovers and rushed the passer. They did the little things they needed, had a superstar in Barkley and they won in spite of Daniel Jones.

Where the Giants screwed up was giving Jones such an enormous contract after their playoff run a few years back. They picked Jones over the Barkley and the rest is history. Barkley played one more season with the Giants, putting up somewhat decent numbers, and now he is thriving in Philadelphia. That team knows how to use their running backs, they have a legit MVP caliber QB in Jalen Hurts, their defense has taken a step up and Barkley seems to be the missing piece. This couldn't have worked out any better for Saquon Barkley.

Daniel Jones, well, as mentioned up top, he was cut today. Before that he was benched in favor of Tommy Devito. I don't know why Brian Daboll picked Devito over Drew Locke, but he did. Maybe Daboll wants out of NYC as well. But, they picked a flash in the pan who is more noteworthy for what his agent wears than anything he has ever done on the field. That speaks volumes to me. The Giants are going to eat whatever money they owe Jones now, but they don't care, they just want him gone. He was taking 4th string QB reps in practice yesterday and they even deployed him at safety on the Giants scout team defense for this week. I have to imagine when that happened that Jones knew it was only a matter of time before he was gone. I mean the disrespect they showed him is kind of sad but also hilarious to me.

What I don't think I'll get over as a fan of football is picking him over Barkley. Barkley is a generational back. He can run and catch. He is a good return man. He knows what he does best and he excels at that while always trying to get bigger, faster and stronger. Jones looks like a dope on and off the field. He seems like he doesn't really want to play this sport that made him millions of dollars. It is clear that he wasn't the guy for this job from day one. I'll be curious to see where his career takes him from here, but I have to assume he will never be more than a backup until he retires. And Saquon Barkley may be the spark to an Eagles team that could make a deep playoff run this year and seasons after this.

Ty Watches "The Penguin"

I finished "The Penguin" a few days ago and I have some thoughts. I will not spoil anything in this piece because I think people should watch this show. I also want to say, the time for spoilers should be well past by this point, but I want to respect the wishes of people that may not watch stuff in real time, or their version of binging is like mine, where I watch a few episodes a day over a week. There, got that out of the way.

"The Penguin" caught my interest from the moment I saw him in "The Batman". He was barely onscreen, but I was intrigued. I also liked the costume and makeup that Colin Farrell wore and I wanted to see more of him in this world. They announced the show and I was stoked. Then I forgot about it until RD mentioned it to me. I started watching right away because RD usually recommends good stuff to me. I was in from the jump. I liked how dark and grimy the show was on my tv. This may have had names of people from comic books and superhero movies, but this show is not in that genre. This show is something totally different. This is a hard crime drama. It reminded me of "Goodfellas". It has all the tropes, in a good way, of classic crime stories, some of the characters just happened to be called The Penguin or Selina Kyle. I will say though, when The Penguin is called that, he is very angry and hates that name. It is bad for him. He doesn't like it at all.

The events of the show take place right after the ending of "The Batman". The story immediately picks up, but this is about the crime families within Gotham and the introduction of a new drug called bliss. From there on out we meet some new villains and new people that I've never heard of before. Colin Farrell is Oz. He is amazing in this role. He takes it on headfirst and he absolutely nails it. Cristin Milioti plays Sofia, who is totally new to me. She is fantastic. I found myself openly rooting for her even though she is as villainous as the worst people in Gotham. Milioti needs to get proper recognition for this part. And Rhenzy Feliz plays Vic. He is a down on his luck kid who Oz catches trying to steal his rims from his car. Oz spares him and takes him along on his journey to becoming the top drug guy in Gotham. Feliz is pretty great as well, acting up to the level of Farrell when they're on screen together. There are more people involved, but these are the three main actors and each one is better than the next.

I really enjoyed watching this show as it unfolded. There are a few episodes in the middle that lag for just a bit, but they're worth it in the long run. This show needs these episodes to build up the world the creators have created. I also want to say, and this is no spoiler, this is one of the saddest, most depressing endings to a tv show that I've ever seen. I sat on my couch after the finale and let it sink in and that was the biggest feeling I came away with in the end. It is so sad and probably the only way they could've ended this season. I don't know if they're going to make any more episodes. I hope they do, but it wouldn't be the worst thing if they didn't make anymore and just let this one epic season stand on its own.

I highly recommend watching this show. Don't go into it expecting a typical comic book thing because you will be disappointed. But, if you go into it expecting a hard crime drama, it will be one of the best things you'll see on tv all year.

What I Learned After Listening to Every Taylor Swift Album

For years, whenever Taylor Swift came up in conversation, my go-to response was, “I like her public persona, but her music isn’t really for me.” It was easy to say, but one day I realized something: I had never actually given her music a real chance. So, I decided to dive in headfirst and listen to all of her albums, chronologically, as they were released.

The journey started with her self-titled debut, and right away, I was surprised. I had always thought of Taylor Swift as a pop star, but her early albums are undeniably country. I’ve never been much of a country fan—though I do enjoy some Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. While Taylor’s early work had its charm, the themes of love and faith felt broad and vague, which makes sense given her widespread appeal. It didn’t resonate with me personally, but I could see the seeds of her future stardom.

As I moved forward in her discography, I noticed the gradual evolution in her sound. By the time I got to Red, Taylor was starting to leave her country roots behind, and 1989 marked a full transition into synth pop. Now, synth pop isn’t a genre I typically gravitate toward, but it was an improvement in my mind. The shift showed her willingness to experiment and reinvent herself, a quality I respect.

It wasn’t until Lover and beyond that I found genres I connected with more. Albums like folklore and evermore leaned into indie vibes, which are genres I often enjoy. But even here, I found myself underwhelmed by the lyrical content. The stories and themes felt shallow compared to what I’ve come to expect from indie music. Then, with Midnights, Taylor pivoted back to synth pop, and her latest album, Tales of the Tortured Poets, seemed to aim for a folk-inspired sound but didn’t quite hit the mark for me.

By the end of this musical journey, I realized I probably won’t be revisiting Taylor Swift’s discography. I prefer music that challenges me or dives deep into unique perspectives, and much of Taylor’s work seems designed for broad appeal. That’s not inherently a bad thing—it’s just not what I’m looking for. I’ll admit, though, my YouTube Music algorithm may never recover from this experiment!

That said, there were a few things I came to appreciate about Taylor Swift along the way. Her decision to re-record her earlier albums as Taylor’s Version to reclaim her music from the greedy hands of the industry? Badass. It’s rare to see an artist take such a bold and principled stand. And her talent—both as a songwriter and as a cultural icon—is undeniable. Another surprise? Just how much of her music I’d already heard in passing without realizing it. Taylor Swift has been a constant presence in the cultural background for over a decade, and my dive into her music underscored just how omnipresent her work is.

At the end of the day, I’m now informed when I say, “I like Taylor Swift the public persona, but her music isn’t really for me.” This journey helped me understand why her fans love her, and while I may not be joining the Swiftie ranks anytime soon, I respect the artistry and effort behind her incredible career.

What is Wrong with the 76'ers?

The Philadelphia 76ers are a total mess. Let’s discuss.

Look, I had super high hopes for this team this season. I thought they had figured it out. I proclaimed them the winners of the offseason. Paul George felt like the perfect fit. They got the Martin twin on a great deal. Kyle Lowry was back. Joel Embiid seemed finally healthy going into the season. Tyrese Maxey got paid. Tobias Harris is gone. They have Nick Nurse, who is a very good coach. They seemed to have finally figured it out and they were going to compete for a title. Well, they have been nothing short of a disaster this season, to this point. They're 2-11, tied for the worst record in the NBA. I know it's early, but 2-11 is tough to climb out of, even early on.

Embiid has been more noteworthy for games missed than anything else. I know he also "swung" at a reporter, but I don't blame him for that. That reporter said some out of line comment regarding Embiid's family. But, the missed games, the lack of effort when he plays, the disregard for the team's success, it has been wild. The 76ers need him if they want to win big. He doesn't have to play all the time, but they need him for more than half the season. He is too integral and too important to not be on the court. Paul George has played less than Embiid it seems. He hyperextended his knee in the preseason, but that injury should have healed by now. He should be good to go. He should be firing on all cylinders, as it were. Tyrese Maxey is doing fine, but he is being asked to do far, far too much for his skill set. Maxey is supposed to be a lightning bolt offense guy. They need him to score and score in bunches. That is what he does best, but he has had to do way, way too much to this point. That is unfair to ask of him and his game is suffering for right now. The bench is nonexistent. The coaching staff is struggling. Kyle Lowry is looking old. The 76ers just don't seem to have what it takes.

I couldn't have been more wrong about this team. I assumed they would cruise through the regular season and easily be a top three seed in the East come playoff time. I thought Embiid playing a little less would help him in the long run. I figured George was going to walk right into 25 points per game and be the second defensive stopper they desperately need. And I assumed Maxey would continue to torch opposing defenses. None of that has happened. They look like a very, very bad team. They have some off court problems too. A big time bombshell of a report came out this afternoon saying that the team is in fighting. Maxey apparently called out Embiid. They have been going at it in practice. They have issues with Nick Nurse. There are far too many problems to even list here today. This is not a good look.

The 76ers are going to have to bring it the last 3/4 of the season. They have to show that they care. They have to prove doubters, myself now included, wrong. But this version of the team is going nowhere fast. At this rate they're going to be picking in the lottery and they will have a myriad of questions to answer this offseason. I don't know if it is going to get any better for them soon, but they need to or they are going to be looked at as the biggest embarrassment in the NBA this season. They can turn it around, but they have to start right now. They have wasted too much time and now it is biting them in the butt. Time to figure it out 76ers. No more time to goof off. Start winning games before you are out of the playoffs.

Better Late Than Never on "Escape From New York"

When the pandemic started I made the decision to go back and watch a good amount of classic movies that I've missed over the years. I have made good headway, but there are a ton of movies considered classics, and I've only made a small dent on my list. I've kept up as best I can, and this weekend it was my turn to pick the movie for date night. One movie I have been circling for quite a long time was "Escape From New York". I have become a big John Carpenter fan since the pandemic, and the "Escape From" movies are some I have missed. Well, that was remedied this weekend by us watching "Escape From New York".

I have to say right off the bat, I loved this movie. Every second of it was exactly what I wanted out of an action movie. "Escape From New York" takes place in the futuristic world of 1997. I love this about older movies as well, seeing what the actors, writers and directors all predicted what the future would be like. It's pretty wonderful. The island of Manhattan has become a prison, and all criminals have inhabited certain areas of it and are living horrific lives. Kurt Russell plays Snake Plissken. Plissken is one of the coolest characters that has ever existed. He's mean, gruff, angry all the time and has a certain set of skills. He is 1981's version of Liam Neeson from "Taken". Plissken needs to save the president who has been kidnapped, and we go along on the ride with him for 90 plus minutes. I can see why Russell was considered such a big star back in the early 80's. He is good looking. He has this rough side to him. He speaks the coolest of anyone I've ever heard on film. He carries himself like the movie star he was/is. I was glued to the screen every second he was on camera, which is the majority of the movie. He was exceptional. I could tell how much he loved this role and this movie. It showed on my tv. There are other actors in this movie that are doing some nice work, Romero comes to mind, but none did what Russell did while he was on screen.

I also love the way Carpenter directs this, and all of his movies, for that matter. He makes action and scary movies, but he lets you live in the world they have created. It's not non-stop action. There's not the constant threat of a jump scare coming at any moment. Carpenter builds the world within the movie. He lets us get to know the characters. We find reasons to root for or against them. He tells a story with his direction. They don't make action movies like that anymore. No one wants to sit and figure stuff out. We just want it fed to us like babies. Carpenter didn't do that. He wanted the viewer to figure things out for themselves, and I appreciate that. He's telling a story, but he lets us figure things out on our own. I miss action movies like that.

All in all, "Escape From New York" is instantly one of my favorite movies. I loved every single second of this movie. I loved the performances, mainly Russell'. I want more directors to take a page from Carpenter's work and build the world and story. I highly recommend this movie if you haven't seen it yet. It is one of the better movies that has been made.

Webanyama is Already Must Watch Basketball

Victor Webanyama had his first career 50 point game last night. This is the first of very many to come for him. I have been kind of waiting for this to happen. Let’s discuss.

Webanyama is one of my favorite players. I grew attached during the draft process last year. I watched as many of his games as a rookie as I could. I watched him almost single handily beat Team USA in the summer Olympics this year. All of this made me like him even more. The guy is an enigma on the court in all the right ways. Someone that big isn’t supposed to be able to do the things he does. I’m a 90’s NBA kid. I grew up watching and loving Charles Barkley and Shawn Kemp. I was all in on Shaq. Yao Ming was an incredible flash of light during his shortened career. The big men I watched with awe were all overpowering and lumbering. Shaq dunked all over dudes. Barkley used wit and quickness to excel. Yao Ming was humongous. Shawn Kemp was wildly athletic and a thunderous dunker. They all went hard and went hard all the time. They had one or two moves and perfected them. Wemby is so much more athletic and talented than any of them for a guy his size. This is no shade to any of the guys I mentioned either. All of those dudes are some of my all time favorite players. But I think even they’d admit that Wemby is an athletic anomaly. He’s 7’4. He brings the ball up the court. He’s skinny, but he is a long rim defender. Go look and see what he just did to Domantas Sabonis recently. He is an excellent cutter and passer. Offense can run through him in the paint and at the top of the key. He can dunk on you or he can pull you out to the three point line. Case in point, during his 50 point game, he hit eight threes. Again, he’s a 7’4 center! That’s wild that he can do that. He’s a bigger Kevin Durant. He’s a faster Steven Adams. He’s a better shooter than Kristaps Porzongis. He’s more malleable on defense than Jaren Jackson Jr. He’s a cutter than Russell Westbrook. And when he figures out passing angles even better, his greatness will be harnessed even more. There’s never been anyone like Wembanyama. What he’s doing at his size and age has never been seen before. LeBron made it cool for a power forward to play point guard. Zion made it cool for a thick guy to run the offense. Jokic has stat nerds cumming in their jeans on a daily basis. Webanyama is taller and younger than all of them. He’s just scratching the surface of his greatness. Stars are going to want to play with him. Greg Poppovich is going to stick around longer, get better soon by the way, just to help shepherd him into being the face of the NBA.  And this is just the first of major achievements this star is going to make.

I implore all of you to watch this kid play basketball any chance you can. It’s amazing to see him play and watch him do the incredible things he does at a player his size. Wemby is must watch TV.
