Ben Simmons is Soft

I was really hoping that I was going to get to see the debut of Ben Simmons this season tonight when the Nets play the 76ers. Unfortunately, he has been ruled out with a "back injury". Earlier this week he also filed a grievance against the 76ers organization. And, as of this morning, he was apparently harassed outside of his hotel room in Philadelphia. There is a ton of stuff to unpack here, but the one thing this truly screams to me, Ben Simmons is soft.

First off, Philly fans need to chill the hell out. Without Simmons this team would not have risen as fast as they did. Sure he is a very bad shooter, but what he does on the defensive end of the floor is amazing. He is one of the premiere defenders in the league. He can guard all five positions. He helped push that team to the one seed last season and he was crucial to them going down in the bubble when he got hurt. Simmons did some good things while in Philly. I know the fans are mad at him, or whatever, but they have to admit that he was a crucial player up until this season.

This offseason, and where we are now has really shown me a lot, mainly the fact that he is, as I said before, soft. Something went haywire in his brain during the conference finals last season, and instead of owning up to it and making a real effort to get better, he went on the defensive and blamed everyone but himself. I don't blame Doc Rivers for saying he did not know if Simmons could be the point guard of a title contender. He was asked a question in the heat of the moment and he answered truthfully. Rivers messed up by saying he never said that, but, again, I do not disagree with his original statement. I also do not blame Joel Embiid for questioning Simmons' heart and effort. Embiid, when healthy, is a legit MVP candidate. I'd vote for him this season for sure. He has more than proved that this is his team, especially this season with Simmons not playing. The 76ers are the two or three seed in the East, Embiid has kept them afloat, and now that he has Harden as a willing and capable teammate, he looks so much better. Embiid is the 76ers guy. Simmons was never going to be the 76ers guy. I think he knew that, and so did his agency, and that was why, instead of just taking the much deserved heat, he went on the defensive and refused to play until he was traded.

Then we had the video of him reporting to practice, but not paying any attention. He was on his phone, he was not doing drills and he looked like he quit. Then he said he had mental issues to work out. I will never question anyone who says they have mental stuff to work out. I have lived every day of my life with real bad OCD and anxiety. I have been taking medication for 20 plus years now because of my mental stuff. But Simmons seems to be using it as a crutch. Philly's front office offered to get him help, and he refused. He would then go out and do things that people with real mental issues just do not do. I hope he is seeing someone now to get real help, but I also think this was another way to deflect the attention off of his selfishness.

When he was finally traded, he never did what a lot of players do now by saying goodbye to the city that drafted him. He did the opposite. He filed a grievance against the team. He is making it all about him yet again. He is acting like a selfish, spoiled, soft little baby. He has always been coddled, and now that he is a professional, and that stuff doesn't fly as well, he is reverting back to tendencies you see from spoiled little kids. He got his way. He got what he wanted. The Nets are even letting him sit out the game in Philly tonight because we all know Simmons is deathly afraid to go out there and make a mistake. They can say it is injury related all they want, but he is scared. Go and watch what Stephen A Smith had to say about him. I'm not a Smith guy, but he knows Philly sports from covering them for years, and he was right on the money in his assessment of Simmons at the moment. He has wasted a year of his prime to "prove a point". Yet we do not know what type of player we will see when he comes back. Will he still be an incredible defensive player? Can he run the fast break? How will he play with sharp shooters surrounding him? What is going to happen in the playoffs when teams start daring him to shoot, or start intentionally fouling him to put him at the line? How is his mentality going to hold up to that much pressure? There are far, far too many questions right now.

I used to like Simmons. I thought it was rad to see a 6'10 guy run the point. But I have lost any respect I used to have for him after seeing his attitude and reaction to the dreadful playoff performance last season. It is never his fault, he puts the blame on everyone else. He is soft. He is coddled. And he may be done as a prime time NBA player. I guess we will have to wait until he is less scared to see if he can still play this game at the highest level. That is a real shame.

Let's Talk About Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson

Two big time QB's made big decisions on their future yesterday. It is time to discuss.

First I want to talk about that punk Aaron Rodgers. He completely fleeced the Packers. He acted like a malcontent, a whiner, he played awful in their playoff game and he moaned and groaned about "cancel culture" and "the woke media" all season long. He openly lied to the media, he used meaningless words prior to the year, and when he got caught, he went on defense. He never directly answered any questions about his blatant lying, he yelled at anyone that disagreed with him and he acted like a spoiled child. But the Packers gave into his childish behavior and awarded him a humongous extension.

Rodgers is going to sign a four year 200 million dollar deal. This is asinine to me. He is too old, on the wrong side of his prime, not the reason why the Packers are in contention anymore and has handcuffed the future of the team. This is akin to when the Lakers gave Kobe Bryant a big extension when he was old and coming off a torn ACL. While I do not think the Packers will fade as fast as that Lakers team, I do not have a good feeling about this deal for the future of the Packers. But the people who make the decisions in Green Bay gave that malcontent exactly what he wanted in the end.

This is a classic example of a spoiled rotten kid getting his way. I would never buy one of my kids a toy if they acted like Rodgers did at all last season. They would be grounded and told what they did was selfish and wrong. They would have to own up to their mistakes. But Green Bay just rewarded his bad behavior because they are afraid of being a basement dweller for a few seasons.

I really despise this deal. I wish the Packers would have just moved on. I would really like to say I am going to switch allegiances, but I am so far in the bag for this team, so I honestly do not know who I will root for this upcoming NFL season. At least I still have the Wolverines to root for in college football.

Not to be outdone, the Seahawks made a tremendously big trade later in the day after the Packers gave Rodgers his new deal. Seattle traded Russell Wilson to the Broncos for Drew Lock, Noah Fant, Shelby Harris and five draft picks. The Broncos get Wilson and a fourth round pick. Wow.

It was no secret that the Broncos were in the market for an upgrade at the QB position. They were hot on Aaron Rodgers. I heard they were going to trade up in the draft to take a QB. I heard they were going to get involved with some backups on other teams. In the end though, they ended up with Wilson, which is a homerun.

I have made no bones about my dislike for Wilson, but he is a damn good QB. The only reason the Seahawks were relevant after their couple of Super Bowl appearances was the play of Wilson. He was the engine that ran that offense. He had no o line help, and not a very good run game behind him, yet he put up incredible stats, and until last season, had the Seahawks in, or in the hunt for the playoffs every season. He is the type of QB that can truly make a team better by simply being on the roster. He has more than earned his spot among the top five QB's in the NFL. He is very, very good. And I do think he will help the Broncos mightily on the offensive side of the ball. He has some good young weapons on the outside, and a solid running back by committee group in the backfield. The Broncos o line is far superior to anything the Seahawks ever had while Wilson was there. The Broncos also hired Nathinel Hackett, who was the Packers offensive coordinator, and he has a good mind for running a modern NFL offense. Where the trade doesn't help is the Broncos defense. They need to get better on that side of the ball, but their offense is in very capable hands now.

The Seahawks were able to get a fortune for Wilson, and that should help their rebuild go much faster. I was never a believer in Drew Lock, so if I were the Seahawks, I'd use one of those picks on a QB to build around. I do really like the addition of Fant. He is a great pass catching tight end, and putting him next to DK Metcalf will cause matchup nightmares for opponents. I know nothing of the other guy in the trade. But that amount of picks, that is how to rebuild fast in the NFL. The Seahawks have an OKC Thunder amount of picks. They will be able to take a lot of swings, and a good amount of those will mostly hit.

I feel like both teams got a very solid deal in this trade. I think the Broncos immediately become a playoff contender and the Seahawks will be able to keep some continuity and rebuild much faster than other teams. So while I loathe the Rodgers extension, I like the trade between the Seahawks and Broncos.

Ty Watches "Winning Time" Season Premiere

Yesterday I watched the series premiere of "Winning Time" on HBO. The show is about the beginning of the Showtime Lakers. The premiere episode was pretty much all about the Lakers trying to decide if they were going to draft Magic Johnson first overall in the 1979 draft. There was other stuff that happened too, of course.

The show is shot in a very cool, old style type 70's look to it. There are times you can even see the burn marks on the film on the side of the screen. It is pretty neat. The actors also break the fourth wall quite a bit, and I am a fan when directors let actors do that. I just like it when it feels like the person playing a character is talking directly to me. It is a cool change of pace. John C Reilly, who plays Jerry Buss, talks to the audience a ton in the premiere. I love it. Reilly is also really, really good as Buss. I heard this is where the rift between Will Ferrell and Adam McKay started, but Reilly was one of the main reasons this premiere worked for me. I also love, love, love Quincy Isaiah as Magic Johnson. He moves like him, talks like him, looks like him and embodies the confidence and small town attitude Johnson had as a rookie. Isaiah should get so much more work from this role, and this is based solely on his performance in the first episode. I can only imagine it gets better and better from here. Jason Clarke is wonderful as Jerry West. He is angry and anxious and feels like his voice isn't being heard. Gaby Hoffman is going to be a star on this show. You can just tell. She crushed it. DeVaugh Nixon and Solomon Hughes are perfectly cast as Norm Nixon and Kareem Abdul Jabbar. They both look and sound just like them. The casting is almost as good as Isaiah as Johnson. We also meet a few other people in the premiere, but the people I mentioned are the stars of the first episode. I just can't get over how great Reilly is as Buss. He is confident when he shouldn't be. He is in over his head, but he could care less. He is willing to take a shot, even if everyone tells him he is wrong. The same could be said for Isaiah too. There is a scene where he is at a party and plays Norm Nixon one on one. It is a great insight to a soon to be rookie playing a vet. There are also great moments with him and his dad that felt really real. Those two are going to carry this show.

There are moments in the premiere that felt slow and a little tacked on. I did find myself a bit bored with some of the backstory. But when they shifted the story to Magic, and him being their pick for the draft, things kicked into high gear. I understand that pilot's have to be the table setting, and they have to give a good amount of backstory to people that may not know the whole story. But when the episode ends like this one did, where I am hyped to see what comes next, that is a sign of a, hopefully, good show. I also like McKay being heavily involved with this show. He has a true passion for the NBA, especially the era that they are talking about in this show, and it comes across like gangbusters here.

I have high, high hopes for this show. I think it is going to be a hit. I am pumped for what is going to come and how they are going to tell the story. Now I just have to wait until Sunday for the next episode.

Ty Watches "The French Dispatch"

For date night last week I picked "The French Dispatch" to watch. My wife and I are both big Wes Anderson fans, and before the pandemic we had planned on seeing this in the theaters. Then we all know what happened. The movie was recently put on HBO Max though, so we were good to go for a watch.

For the record, I adore Anderson's movies. I think "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "Rushmore" are two of the best movies ever made. "Rushmore" reminds me so much of RD it is crazy. I love "Isle of Dogs" and "Fantastic Mr Fox". I really enjoyed "Moonrise Kingdom". I even like "Bottle Rocket". The only movies of Anderson's that I am not so crazy about are "Life Aquatic" and "The Darjeeling Limited". Those two movies never hooked me. But I was excited for "The French Dispatch". After "Grand Budapest Hotel", I felt like Anderson was on a hot streak. He has such a unique style and he is going full bore ahead. No one can stop him seemingly. He is having a moment. And boy oh boy is "The French Dispatch" about as Wes Anderson as it gets.

The movie is told in three stories from three writers from a newspaper in the 60's I assume. The setting is very whimsical and very colorful, when the movie uses color. There is a ton of black and white in this movie. But when the color shows up, boy does it pop. The sets are also very Anderson-esque. They look quaint and old timey and are like a mashup of all of his movies in one. It has feelings of everything he has made prior to this movie. The movie also takes place in a city called Ennui Blase. It does not get anymore Wes Anderson than that.

Outside the sets and the look, this movie moves and is written in Anderson's singular style. The actors, and my goodness is this a murderers row of actors, all talk fast but look sad. Bill Murray is the head editor, and he is as ennui as they get. Some of the writers we meet, played by Tilda Swinton, Jeffery Wright, Frances McDormand and Owen Wilson, just to name a few, really go for it in Anderson's style, and they nail it. Tilda Swinton is as weird as ever. McDormand is rough and tumble and sweet and straightforward. Wright is fast talking and smart and unique. And Wilson has the silliest and quirkiest story of them all. Some of the actors who play the people being portrayed, like Timothee Chamaleet, Benecio Del Toro, Adrien Brody, Lea Seydoux, Lyna Khoudri, Mathieu Amaric, Steve Park, Bob Balaban, Henry Winkler, Saoirse Ronan, Willem Defoe, Liev Schrieber, Edward Norton and Tony Revelori all really crush their respective performances. I enjoyed the Del Toro story the most, he plays an insane painter who is in jail. But the story Wright tells, which features Ronan, Defoe, Amaric and Park is fast paced and has a kick ass animation scene attached. Also, Chamaleet is the main character in the McDormand story, and he does just a tremendous job. I have become a big time fan of his as of late. He has made some great choices on the roles he has picked recently.

When we were done watching the movie I asked my wife what she thought. She said she enjoyed herself, but it wasn't her favorite Anderson movie. She is partial to "The Royal Tenenbaums". I have thought about it since Friday, and I liked the movie too, but I prefer many of Anderson's other movies. "The French Dispatch" is a very good, very Wes Anderson movie. But it is dark at times. It can also be a bit slow. But Anderson is at a point in his career where he can do what he wants, and what comes out is fun and interesting to watch. I definitely recommend checking this movie out, especially if you are already a fan. I had a good time, and I think you would too.

Ty Watches "High Flying Bird"

Yesterday I was finally able to see "High Flying Bird". I have been putting this movie off for various reasons. I forgot about it. The pandemic started. I stopped watching movies on my own for a while. Sports movies depressed me during the start of the pandemic. There were just a myriad of reasons. But then my interest was reignited when I watched a trailer for it on Netflix. Then I watched the trailer again. Then I read some things about it, and with my wife on a work trip, it was as good a time as ever.

"High Flying Bird" is about a future NBA player, his agent and his agent's assistant trying to find an end to the lockout and get this rookie paid. Oh, and the movie was filmed on an iPhone. It was directed by Steven Soderbergh. This movie has a lot of things going for it for me as a movie watcher. I love basketball, and as I am getting older, I am really into the stuff behind the scenes. I like to know how the people who do not play the game work amongst each other. I mean, I still prefer to see things from the player's perspective, but it is cool to get another look from time to time. The agent is played by Andre Holland. I am a Holland fan. He is really good in most things he is in, and this is no exception. He is fast talking yet level headed. He is the guy who figures out how to get through all the nonsense. He is the smartest one in the room. He knows more than any person he works for or with. Holland was tremendous in this movie. He is the star and the person you cannot take your eyes off when he is on screen. Zazie Beetz plays his assistant, or as she puts it, "former assistant", and she does a great job. She is passionate and as hardworking as anyone. She knows what she wants and how to get it. She also knows how to help players and agents. She is a strong, independent person, and that comes across with Beetz's performance. Melvin Gregg plays the soon to be NBA player. Gregg was also a basketball player in the second season of "American Vandal". But this time he uses his dramatic chops, and he does a solid job. He has the look and attitude of a young rookie trying to find his footing in the league. Then you add on the lockout, and Gregg does a great job of portraying an uncertain future. I also like how he became his own person near the end of the movie. We also have Kyle MacLachlan as a greedy owner, Sonja Sohn as the strong headed president of the Players Union, Zachary Quinto as the head of the sports agency who is way in over his head and Bill Duke as Holland's buddy and tough nosed coach for a youth basketball program.

This is a fast talking, very inside basketball movie. I love how they went from scene to scene in a snap. I also found it easy to watch, even though it was filmed on an iPhone. You could tell it was filmed on something small because there are never anymore than five people in a scene together. I really enjoyed the close up shots of two people talking hoops at any time. I also really liked how Holland was in command and wanted to give his players the most leverage they could have. He was in it for his players. He wanted this lockout to end so they could get paid and he could take over. It was a great story of a person trying to help other people in very, very high profile situations.

I fully recommend this movie for basketball diehards. It is so good, really interesting and a great watch. Check it out.

Ty Watches "Titane"

So I just watched the movie "Titane", and boy oh boy what a ride. This has to be one of the most insane things I have ever watched. I have been thinking about the movie since I finished it last night, and I was thinking about it during my morning run. Hell, I am still thinking about it while I write this right now.

For those that may not know, "Titane" is about a child who gets in a horrible car wreck, gets a metal plate inserted in her head, grows up to become a go go dancer and a killer, pretends to be someone else, meets that person's father, works and lives at the dad's firehouse and eventually has a baby. Seems like a lot, huh? Well that is just the tip of the iceberg. I have heard many people talk about this movie. The first person who told me about it was my dad. He showed me the trailer months ago and I was intrigued. We had talked about going to see it in theaters, but opted not to because of COVID concerns. Then we both forgot about it. Then I heard Tatiana Maslany talk about it on a podcast and that jogged my memory. I read, after listening to the podcast, that it won the top prize at Cannes. I read that it got a nine minute standing ovation. I read that people were saying it is unlike anything they have ever watched. I even read that someone fainted at a screening. Needless to say, I was going to find a way to watch. It was simple enough when I checked Amazon Prime and saw it was available for rental. And since my wife is not into movies like this, and she is on a work trip, it was the perfect time to watch.

I mentioned the plot before, but as I said, there were so, so much more insane and wild things that happened in the movie. First off, the main character has sex with a car and a firetruck. You read that correctly. She has actual sex with an automobile and a firetruck. I do not know how that works, but the movie made it seem possible. She also becomes pregnant with the car's baby. Again, you read that right. All the while she is some kind of serial killer that the police cannot find. She is also super distant from her mom and dad, and seems to do her own thing all the time. The movie is also hyper violent and an extreme version of a body horror movie. I had to stop eating my dessert while I watched. The sex scene with the car was just the tip. The murders are absolutely brutal. There is a scene with a stool and a random dude that will haunt my dreams. She also stabs people with a knitting knife. But when you think it cannot get any crazier, the main character goes on the lam and takes on the life of a random guy who went missing ten years ago. The missing child's dad sees her and just accepts her as his lost son. And then we get some weird dance scenes, especially the one on top of the firetruck near the end. The dad also does steroids for some reason. The two of them together made me uncomfortable. They were too close. As the main actor gets more and more pregnant it just gets grosser and grosser. She leaks oil instead of milk. She scratches her body to the point of ripping her skin apart. As she gets bigger her skin continues to rip apart. When she is on the verge of having the baby, it is pure body horror. All the oil and blood and everything, it was nutso. And the dad helping her out, it was crazy.

I really do not know what to think of this movie. I have gone back and forth. I do not know if I love it or hate it. I do not truly know if I understand it. I am just confused. But the fact that it is stuck in my head has to mean something. At the very least the, the movie leaves a mark. I really do not know if I would recommend this movie or not. It is nuts and gross and sad and gory. But it does not leave you after you watch it. It stays in your head and makes you try to figure out what you just watched. All I know, "Titane" is the most insane and interesting movie I think I have ever seen.

"The Simpsons" Just Delivered Another All Time Classic Episode

"The Simpsons" returned from what seemed like a few month hiatus this past Sunday. I have missed the show. It is my all time favorite show, I like the new episodes because I am not a hipster and I appreciate when the writers do stuff that makes me feel the way I do today. My wife and I watched the newest episode last night on DVR, and it was one of the best, and sweetest episodes "The Simpsons" have ever done.

The short and sweet plot synopsis sees Homer and Marge watching TV and doing their thing. Bart and Lisa see this and think that they have lost their spark. They think they need to do something adventurous and fun. What Bart and Lisa do not realize, this is exactly what Homer and Marge like to do. They love doing menial things together, like any longtime married couple. But to appease the kids they decide to go on an excursion that they have been putting off. When they get there they realize it is not what they were hoping to do. Then they get lost in the woods and have to basically fend for themselves. They go out, lose their car in the river, take off their clothes to try and dry them off, lose those and have to find a way to stay warm and survive in the wilderness. They do. They find a way. They find an abandoned hotel and they make use of the things that are left behind. They make clothes from the carpet, they use the beds and bathtubs as shelter. They find food. They keep it together. Then a wolverine finds them and attacks. Homer finds a way to stop the wolverine and Marge gets away. Homer follows behind her. They use the wolverine for more food and clothes. Eventually Homer sees a person on a snowmobile and tries to track them down. He cannot and tells Marge that part of him was kind of happy that he could not catch the person. Both Homer and Marge decide they need to track down the snowmobile person and they follow the tracks. Before departing their newfound life, Marge says that maybe they can walk slowly and Homer tells her that they always do. As the episode ends we see Homer and Marge in full clothes and hanging out outside their new cabin. When Homer asks Marge if she is ready to leave she tells him to sit with her and watch her favorite "show". That show happens to be the sunrise and the two of them eat chips and the dust is sucked into the air, just like the cheeto dust in the beginning.

It was beautiful. And sweet. And heartwarming. After we finished my wife kept mentioning how nice the episode was. I just kind of sat there and took it all in. In fact I was contemplating the episode all night, and have been all day. This is one of the best episodes of "The Simpsons" ever in my opinion. My wife was completely right. It was an incredibly sweet 22 minutes of TV. It showed the love that Homer and Marge have for one another. They truly are, as the kids say, relationship goals. It also showed, now that I have been married for almost 13 years, how the littlest things are usually the best. My favorite part of the day is when my kids go to bed and my wife and I have dessert and either watch TV or just talk about our day. I also cherish the lunch dates we have when my wife works from home. It truly is the small things that make a relationship with the person you love so great. And that is what this episode proved and showed. It was just so sweet and so nice and so beautiful and has kept a smile on my face for the past 2 days.

I highly recommend people watch this episode, especially married couples. And leave all your "The Simpsons isn't as good as it used to be" or "they don't know how to tell a proper story anymore" theories at the door. Watch this with open eyes and an open mind. You will be moved. I almost guarantee it.

Ty Watches "The Righteous Gemstones" Season 2

My wife and I just finished season 2 of "Righteous Gemstones" last night. Much like "Eastbound and Down" and "Vice Principals", "Righteous Gemstones" is another big time hit from Danny McBride and Jody Hill. I adore these guys and the content they make. I have recently sung the praises of "Eastbound and Down" and "Vice Principals" on this very site. I was very curious to see how they would do this season of "Righteous Gemstones" since it was filmed during the pandemic. Well, any fears I may have had were easily put to rest after the first episode.

This season was a great follow up to one of the most memorable seasons of TV ever. The first season of "Righteous Gemstones" was amazing. I thought it was going to be pretty hard to follow that up with anything close to what they had accomplished. Well I was wrong. They did an amazing job. They brought up new storylines while still keeping the story very dark and very comedic. I will try to keep the rest of my piece as spoiler free as possible.

When they opened season two, with a good amount of church people around a big table, there was some big news dropped on everyone and a guy tried to end his life, only to fail and hurt his legs very, very badly. From that point on I knew we were in for some wild and crazy times in the second season. This season more focused on Eli Gemstone's, John Goodman, checkered past. We found out about him being a wrestler and bodyguard and "gun for hire". Eli did some wild things back in his day. He was helped out by Junior, Eric Roberts, who was such a wonderful addition. He was funny with a mean streak and ended up becoming a big time ally. I loved seeing him and Goodman as kids and where they were now. It was great. Jesse and Amber mended their ways, but Jesse still wanted more. He wanted to become head preacher. He wanted to work with Eric Andre's, another massive and wonderful addition to the cast, church and their new development. Danny McBride is so good at playing a guy way in over his head but does not realize it. McBride was simply the best this season. Judy and BJ showed a ton of growth this season. They helped out Tiffany. Judy started to work with other wives in the church. BJ was accepted into the family by Eli and Jesse. There was also an awesome scene of BJ rollerblading this season. I highly recommend checking it out. Kelvin and Keefe were so pathetic and so funny and then, at the end, totally redeemed themselves. It was a great journey for them this season, especially the stuff with Kelvin and Eli. That was incredible.

As the season had its twists and turns, everything came to a head in the finale. And what a wonderful finale it was. I never seem to know how they are going to end this stuff. And with this season being nine episodes as opposed to the usual ten, they found a way to wrap things up nearly perfectly. Even the Jason Schwartzmann character, a journalist exposing these mega churches, had his story all wrapped up by the end.

I adore this show. I am so amped it is coming back for a third season. I think this may be McBride and Hill's best work to date. And the fact that they are giving actors like Edi Patterson, Adam Devine and Tim Baltz a chance to shine, I love that. And I cannot forget the greatness that is Walton Goggins. He is tremendous as Uncle Baby Billy. That character may be as great as Stevie Janowski. Uncle Baby Billy is amazing. Oh, and they even got MaCaulay Caulkin to appear in a few episodes. Please go watch "Righteous Gemstones". It may be the best show on TV right now.

Tagalongs are the GOAT of Girl Scout Cookies

The majority of my life I have enjoyed Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies. Whenever we bought them when I was growing up, I would request Thin Mints. As I got older and married, when my wife's coworkers kids would sell cookies, I always wanted Thin Mints. Hell, even with my daughter now being in Girl Scouts, when cookies were brought up, I said I would like Thin Mints. They are great. I love them even more when they are put in the freezer and given time to firm up. I can eat them by the sleeve. I know that is not good, but damn if Thin Mints are not wonderful.

Lately I have had a change of heart. I have tried all the flavors of Girl Scout cookies. I don't even like coconut, but I will eat Samoas if that is what's available. Be it Do Si Do's, Trefoils or Thin Mints, Girl Scout cookies are fantastic. But I believe, after eating far too many this past weekend, that Tagalongs are the best flavor.

For those that may not know, Tagalongs are a chocolate covered hard cookie with peanut butter in the middle. It is kind of like a thumbprint cookie, except the peanut butter is covered up. It is like eating a peanut butter cup with a delicious cookie being added. I was popping them in my mouth after basketball this weekend, and with each cookie I just kept thinking about how great they tasted. I could not get enough. I had to ask my wife to take them away from me. Had I had my way, I would have eaten the whole box. I'm not joking.

To test my new theory, I am doing some real scientific work here folks, I ate some frozen Thin Mints yesterday. My son and I shared a few in the afternoon. And they were awesome. They were super tasty and as great as I have always remembered and we each had five or six of them before I cut us off. But later in the day, again I ate way, way, way too many Girl Scout cookies this weekend, I had some more Tagalongs, and they are better. Full stop. I cannot believe my allegiance has changed so drastically like this, but here we are. I think they are easier to eat, and by easier I mean that I can pop them in my mouth and eat an entire box and not feel bad about it. At all. I love the chocolate and peanut butter combo so much, like most everyone else. My daughter is allergic to peanuts, so I guess that I am being heroic by eating them so she is not tempted. I am a saint I suppose. But in all seriousness, if I were some kind of food critic, I would rank Tagalongs at the very top of the list. I mentioned some other flavors in this piece, but Tagalongs take the cake. Thin Mints are a very, very close second. And even the new flavor, a brownie type cookie with caramel and a chocolate drizzle, is fine, but nowhere close to Tagalongs or Thin Mints. Those are the two best, with Tagalongs taking over the top spot.

I never thought this day would come. I was so loyal to Thin Mints. But this weekend has changed me, as far as cookies go. Not only do I think Tagalongs are the best Girl Scout cookies, I think they are the best mass produced cookies in the land. There are better cookies at restaurants and stores that focus on making cookies. But in a world of Oreos and Hydrox and Keebler, Tagalongs take the cake. They're the absolute best.

Ty Watches "Werewolves Within"

I recently watched a movie I enjoyed. I feel like I have been seeing movies that I had high hopes for and they turn out to be not so good. It is kind of a bummer to be frank. But the movie I just watched, I had no idea really what it was going to be. The movie in question is called "Werewolves Within".

I had read that it was based on a video game, and since I do not play many video games, I had no idea what the game was like. I guess the game is a role player game, and you hunt werewolves. Seems easy enough, but those games are not for me. But, I did also see that Sam Richardson was a producer, and he was going to be the star. This got me hype when I read about it. I adore Richardson. He is so funny. He is unassumingly funny. He plays an every man type guy, but an every man that happens to be funny as hell. That kind of piqued my interest in this movie. Then I saw the reviews when it was released, and people seemed to really like it. It got really solid reviews in fact. When I checked the other day it was at, or around, 80 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and the user score was in the upper 80's. I usually dismiss critics' reviews when it is a movie I want to see, but it is a nice plus when reviews are, for the most part, very good. It makes it easier to swallow.

So I sat down the other day to fold laundry and that was going to be my time to watch. I had a ton to fold, so 90 minutes seemed perfect. And I truly enjoyed what I saw. This is a good movie. It has good scares and good humor. It is beautifully shot too. The snow and mountains and the CGI used at the end, it was done really well. The look of the cold actually made me cold when watching. And as I assumed, Richardson was wonderful. He is a forest ranger who moves to a new town. He is there to help the community reconcile a law that is trying to be passed by a gas and oil man. Then a random attack happens to a neighborhood dog and the townspeople start to turn against one another. Everyone thinks everyone else is a werewolf because the simple idea of one is floated by Richardson. It only gets wilder and scarier and funnier from there on out. Richardson stands out, but so does the rest of a great ensemble cast. Milana Vayntrub plays the town mail person. She is funny, sweet and seems to have a secret that she simply won't reveal. I really enjoyed her in this movie. Catherine Curtin is the B&B owner who's husband was one of the wolf's victims. She too is great. Wayne Duvall is the oil tycoon who is as old school and country as they come. Michaela Watkins and Michael Chernus are the crazy town people. Watkins makes wild dolls and Chernus is too handsy with other members of the town. Cheyenne Jackson and Harvey Guillen are a married rich couple who own a small vacation house in the town. They are hilarious. George Basil and Sarah Burns are another couple that are hoosier and dumb and love and hate one another at the same time. They both have some excellent line reads in the movie. Glenn Fleshler plays Emerson. He is the town recluse and the one everyone blames from the start. He also has a great story involving Mr Rogers. And Rebecca Henderson is the doctor in town fighting the oil tycoon. She is creepy and perfect in her role.

This movie, and this has been said many times, reminded me of a modern day "Clue". I was trying to figure out the twist the whole time, and it did not happen for me until it was fully revealed. I love when that happens. I had all these theories going on in my head, and they seemed to change every five minutes or so.

I love this movie. I love how it was all resolved. I thought the actors did a wonderful job. I am not going to get the video game, but I would be lying if I didn't say that I was semi interested in what the game looks like now. If you want a solid scare and a very good laugh, watch this movie. It is totally worth your 90 minutes.

Better Never Than Late on "New Mutants"

For date night last Friday my wife picked the movie "New Mutants". We had both wanted to see this movie, but we both also remembered how many times it was pushed back due to various reasons. That is usually never a good sign. I cannot recall a movie being wonderful after many reshoots and pushbacks. In fact, it seems you only ever hear about that stuff when it happens because the movies are not good.

That, unfortunately, happens to be the case with "New Mutants". From what I knew this movie was supposed to come out in 2018. I am pretty sure that Aarya was filming this movie as "Game of Thrones" was ending. Then it was stopped due to reshoots. Then they had to do more reshoots. Then they had to recast some roles. Then the pandemic hit. Then it got pushed back even further due to variants and other circumstances involved with COVID. Then it was just kind of dumped in the late summer months of 2020 and that release was met with very poor reviews from critics and fans. We opted to not go to the theaters because I still will not go to a theater to see movies I really want to see. We decided we would wait. And to be quite honest, I had forgotten about the movie. But it was on HBO the other night and my wife asked me to record it so we could watch it on date night. I did, and we proceeded to watch after the kids went to bed.

I have to say, I agree with most of the criticisms that the movie got from the general public. "New Mutants" was very dour and sad and filled with messy dialogue and action scenes. There were times when I didn't realize what was going on, and it is not like this is a complicated premise. It should have been pretty easy. These are the mutants that are supposed to take over for the X-Men. Aarya should have been cool as hell. She was a shapeshifting werewolf. But I couldn't get over her hair or her weird Irish accent. Anna Taylor Joy should have been dope, she had a sweet power, but she had some of the corniest dialogue and her backstory was the thing of nightmares. The guy from "Stranger Things" had an even worse accent than Aarya and I could not take anything about him seriously. His whole backstory was absurd. The fire dude, I have no idea who he was, had this weird tonal change halfway through the movie, becoming the "funny guy" out of nowhere. It was very confusing. And the doctor, she was in the new "Suicide Squad", was so easily pointed out as the true villain from the jump. Even the main girl, the newest of the new mutants, was just too sad and gloomy throughout the entirety of the movie. There were some cool things they did. I liked the new girl and Aarya being a couple. I find it comforting that these superhero movies are letting the characters be gay or bi. They do not all have to be straight. I also did like Taylor Joy fighting the big ass dream bear at the end. But that was about it.

I should have liked this movie. I am an X-Men fan. They were the first superhero movies I watched and really enjoyed. This should have been in my wheelhouse. But it took itself too seriously. It was too dark in tone. There was no real fun, and this was not on the level of "Logan", which wasn't made as a fun superhero movie. "New Mutants" was a big miss for me. I should have known because of all the pre release stuff, but I still wanted to give it a chance due to my love of the X-Men and all things mutant in the comic book world. But this did not work. Oh well, they canceled the rest of the trilogy they were going to make, and maybe that means they will go back to the drawing board to try to fix it. My fingers will be crossed until then.

Ty Watches "Peacemaker"

After a good amount of persistence from my wife and RD, my wife and I finished the first season of "Peacemaker" the other night. I was kind of hesitant to watch it because I have some serious superhero fatigue right now. I'm kind of over it in fact. There is so much, I'm expected to watch it all because I am a pop culture writer and I cannot seem to keep up with everything all the time. I have also really disliked the last two super hero movies I've seen. So I was not itching to get at "Peacemaker".

I was wrong. RD and my wife were definitely right. This show is really good, fun and even touching and dramatic at times. John Cena is wonderful as the main character. He brings a new level to this antihero who, especially at the end of the new "Suicide Squad" movie, I assumed was a villain. He absolutely crushes this role. I have been on the fence about Cena as an actor, but with "Trainwreck" and "Blockers" and now "Peacemaker", I am sold. The dude can act.

What makes this show so good is the rest of the cast really knocks it out of the park. Danielle Brooks plays an agent named Adebayo and she is truly fantastic. She is Amanda Waller's daughter, Waller is the true villain from the movie, and Brooks is so good at portraying a person in over her head, but also really wants to help. Chukwudi Iwuji is very good as the stoic, alien like, no spoilers, leader of this new version of a suicide squad. There is a moment when he tries to use emotion that is so, so good on the show. Jennifer Holland is a complete badass. She kicks so much ass on this show, takes no prisoners and is truly the hero of season one. She rules. Steve Agee is hilarious and totally game for anything they throw his way. He also has one of the more touching moments in the season one finale. He is getting a shot on a big time show finally, and he is crushing it. Robert Patrick is scum, and he nails this character. I actively hated him while watching and I have to believe that was his job as an actor. And even some side characters, namely Annie Chang and Lochlyn Munro as detectives.

It truly gets no better than Freddie Stroma who plays Vigilante. He is, by far, the best thing about this show. I would get excited when he would have a long run on an episode. I loved when he showed up in episode two. I knew nothing of this character, and I'm glad that was the case. Seeing Vigilante with fresh eyes was amazing. He deserves Emmy consideration. He is the best thing on a very good show and he shines brighter than any other actor, all of which did a wonderful job. Vigilante is one of my all time favorite TV characters on any show ever. Full stop. He is awesome. I go back to a scene in a jail, man was that incredible. Vigilante is the man.

The season one story is wild, but with James Gunn writing and directing pretty much every episode I expected it to be weird and different. And I think that is what grabbed me about this show. Yes it is a superhero show and it brings back a character from a big movie, but this is not your run of the mill superhero stuff. This is all about an antihero. It is not as good as "The Boys'', but it has a similar feel. Again, I was hesitant, I am bored with superhero stuff, this shouldn't have worked, but damn if I did not really like this season. I know it has been picked up for a second season, and I like that. I will watch. So, even if you might be sick of superhero stuff, I'd still give "Peacemaker" a chance. It is different enough that you do not feel like you are watching a typical Marvel or DC movie. And it is so worth your time to watch Stroma as Vigilante. I cannot overstate how great he is on this show. Check it out.

Ty Watches the 2022 NBA All Star Weekend

Let's talk about the NBA all star weekend now. I

want to get the boring or not so good things out of the way first. The celebrity game was so bad that I tuned out after a few minutes. My son stayed with it a bit longer, but even though he is ten and currently obsessed with basketball, turned it off before halftime. He came upstairs in our house and exclaimed, "what a terrible game that was". Again, he is ten. The one cool thing is my wife knew about the MVP of the game, Alex Toussaint, because she rides a Peloton and does some of his classes. Other than that, it was rough stuff. And then we have the dunk contest. This year was real bad. So was last year. The past two dunk contests have reminded me of the post Vince Carter, pre Zach Lavine and Aaron Gordon dunk contests. There were way too many misses, way too many free attempts, dunks that were amazing, but not as great as some other things I have seen and it took far too long. Go look up the picture of Shaq watching the dunk contest this year and that sums it up perfectly. It was bad. I was also very confused by the skills competition. I usually like this portion of the weekend, but the scoring was weird, the teams were off and it was all around confusing. I did like the passing thing and the obstacle course, but the half court shot was not needed, and the shooting from different areas for different amounts of points, I could have done without that. But it was dope to see Evan Mobley and Darius Garland perform really well.

Let's get to some of the better aspects of the weekend. Even though the top 75 draft was like watching paint dry, it was rad to hear former greats talk about other greats and what made them so great. Dominique Wilkins messed up by not picking Jordan first overall, but that is besides the point. It was neat to hear them all go into great detail about what made these players so great. I also liked the three point contest. The three point contest can drag from time to time, but seeing Karl Anthony Towns go far, and then win it all, that was pretty great. The other competitors did solid, but KAT crushed, and it was dope to see a big man win it for once. I also liked the new format of the rising stars game. It was a neat way to switch it up a bit. Change can be good, and this was a very solid change and I hope they continue to roll with it this way going forward.

Finally we have the actual game. The closer to the whole weekend. The game itself was kind of blah for the entirety of the first half. There was no defense, tons of scoring and dunks galore. I did love the dunks. It was incredible to see these guys do some amazing athletic feats. I especially loved seeing Ja Morant do two 360 dunks. It was also amazing to watch Steph hit eight threes in the first half. Steph usually does not bring it in all star games. But I think the fact that he has been in a minor slump for a bit, and that the Cleveland crowd booed him, he decided he was going to bring it. He hit eight more threes in the second half and made a two pointer and ended the night with 50. Giannis also scored 30. LeBron was in the mid 20's. There were a lot of points being scored by the biggest names in the league right now. It was wild. And then, with the Elam Ending in place, that makes the final quarter so much fun to watch. It was a nail biter, each team traded baskets and the ending was almost too perfect. LeBron hit a fadeaway jumper, in Cleveland, after making comments about how he was not closing the door on returning there to end his career. It was awesome.

The NBA all star weekend has some things they need to work out, namely the dunk contest, but the game, especially with the Elam Ending, has been really fun for the last three seasons.

Juwan Howard Should Be Severely Punished, Not Fired, for His Actions

The NBA all star weekend will have to wait until tomorrow. Today I have to talk about the unfortunate incident that happened at the end of the Wisconsin-Michigan basketball game yesterday.

This was a somewhat easy win for Wisconsin, with Michigan going ice cold in the second half. Wisconsin won, won with ease and put a dent into Michigan's tournament hopes. Near the end of the game Wisconsin called a timeout, up 14 points, while Michigan still had a few starters in, and they were pressing, with about 10 seconds left in the game. I feel like both head coaches made a mistake here. Michigan should not have been pressing. They were down, they had no chance to win and the starters should have been out. Wisconsin had the win in hand, they could have let the clock run and there was no need to even worry about using a pointless timeout that late in the game. None of this is against the actual rules, but it is part of the unwritten rules in the world of sports. Each coach made multiple unwritten rule mistakes.

During the handshakes at the end of the game, which I was totally happy not having last season due to COVID, Juwan Howard tried to quickly walk past Greg Gard to avoid letting his temper get the best of him. Howard was, for some reason, fuming about the late timeout. And I guess when Howard walked by Gard he said, "I will remember this shit". That was not needed. But Gard grabbed Howard, I guess to try and explain. Again, that was not needed. Things just escalated from there. When Gard grabbed at Howard and stopped him, Howard went off. He started to yell and grab at Gard and the other Wisconsin coaches. It got to the point where the players got involved. People were gathering in a big circle and yelling at one another. At one point Howard open palm slapped a Wisconsin assistant coach. Then players, pretty much all Michigan players, threw punches. Howard had to be pulled back by some of his players. Moussa Dibate and Terrance Williams threw hands. The players and coaches all moved the big circle back and forth, and things were eventually settled.

After the game each coach gave their side of the story and every single website and sports app in the world had their own personal take. I sat and stewed in it for a while. At first I just kind of forgot about it. Then I thought some more about it. Then I slept on it. And then my dad and I texted about it this morning.

I believe that there needs to be punishment handed down, and it needs to be stern. After the football offseason and this basketball incident, Warde Manuel, Michigan's AD, needs to flex his muscles. It has not been great to be a Michigan fan the past couple months, what with Harbaugh openly flirting with the NFL, the basketball team struggling and now this post game handshake incident. Howard needs to be suspended, maybe for the rest of the season, including the Big Ten tournament, and any postseason tournament they may get invited to. Howard also needs to feel the punishment in his wallet. The fine should be pretty significant. I'm thinking, at the low end, at least 20,000 dollars. My dad also brought up that maybe they should send Howard to anger management, I hadn't thought of that, but it seems like a good idea, being this is not the first time Howard has gotten physical with another coach. Whatever it may be, the punishment needs to leave a mark.

As for the people saying Howard should be fired, that is nonsense. These things do happen, and this is not even close to the worst thing that has happened on a college basketball floor. Let us not forget about Bobby Knight throwing a chair or grabbing a player by the throat. Or the time Coach K openly chastised Dillon Brooks for shooting a late 3 in a tournament game that ended Duke's season. We have all the off field stuff with Iowa football last season, and Kirk Ferentz did not even miss a game. Howard putting his hands on another coach is very, very wrong, and needs to be addressed. But there is no world in which he deserves to lose his job. He is having a rough year, he let his emotions get the best of him and he will most likely pay a heavy price. But lose his job? Come on. That is too, too far. But he does deserve a swift and painful punishment. This is also a chance for Warde Manuel to hit the reset button and show the coaches of the sports teams that they work for him, not the other way around.

Yesterday was a bad game marred with a horrible on court incident involving the head coach of the basketball team. Now we wait to see what Howard's punishment will actually be.

Zion is Hurt Again and That Sucks

It looks as if Zion Williamson is going to miss all of the 21-22 NBA season. It is being reported that he may need a second surgery on his ankle, or some lower body part needed to play basketball at a high level.

This really bums me out. I am trying to be more upbeat this year, but after hearing this news the other day, I have to talk about it. I like Zion. I am not a Duke fan, but I watched them play when Zion was there. I am not a New Orleans Pelicans fan, but I watched when Zion was playing. But now, with multiple injuries and missing time here and there and having his minutes restricted when he was playing, it just seems like Zion is going to go down as one of the biggest what ifs in the history of the NBA.

There are some reports saying that he might not need the surgery, that it is too soon to tell, but come on, we have seen this story before. And that is what scares me most about this new report. Zion was THE can't miss prospect when he entered the draft three years ago. He was supposed to be the most sure pick since LeBron. He was going to save the Pelicans, being that they had just traded Anthony Davis to the Lakers. Teaming him up with Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram and Josh Hart was going to make this one of the most fun teams to watch in the NBA for years to come. Hell, I was laughed at and chastised by RD for ranking Ja Morant ahead of Zion in my pre draft write up that year. Who is laughing now RD? HAHAHAHAHA. But I digress. I bought into the Zion hype. I am super pumped that Morant is as great as he is this early in his career, but I looked at the possibility of him and Zion being the next 1-2 punch in the league. It was going to be super dope to see these two extremely skilled and hyper athletic athletes go head to head for years and years to come. But while Ja has stayed relatively healthy, the same cannot be said for Zion. His rookie year he played in only 24 games. Those 24 games were spellbounding, with some nutjobs claiming he should be ROTY, clearly Ja deserved and won it. But he looked great. But he was also playing garbage time for a team well out of the playoff race by then. He missed far too much time, and we should have seen that as a sign. But in the 2020 season he played in 61 games. He seemed like he was in decent shape. He was playing the point at times for the Pelicans. He was putting up double doubles with ease. It looked like we were going to get the greatness we all expected.

Then the pandemic hit. There was a two month layoff. And when the NBA decided to do the bubble, Zion looked disinterested and out of shape. Something seemed off. The Pelicans could have made the playoffs, but they went home after eight subpar games. Then talks started that he was unhappy, that he was going to ask for a trade, that he wanted to be in a bigger market. But then when the season started, Zion was hurt again. He was going to miss a few weeks. The few weeks turned into a month. Then came a surgery that has kept him out. There were also some photos surfacing of him shooting around before a game, and he looked big. I get that people can doctor photos, and I do not like my picture taken, but Zion has always been a big dude, and he looked real big in these photos. That was the one knock on him coming into the NBA, that he was going to have to lose weight. And it seems like he has not taken on that role yet. I get it. I'm a big guy too, and food is delicious, but I am not a professional athlete who has gobs of money at my disposal and can hire people to help keep me in shape. Yet I have found ways to lose weight and keep it off. To this point in the season, Zion has played zero games. And with this new news it seems like he is going to miss the entirety of the regular season. And I think fans and other people involved with the NBA are starting to move on.

I hope I am wrong and I hope he comes back stronger than ever next year. But we are in year three and he has only played 85 career games. That scares me. I cannot imagine how scared Pelicans fans and their front office are right now. I hope the news is wrong. I hope he does not have to get surgery, or if he does, it is very minor. I hope he comes back and is as ferocious a dunker and rebounder as he was before. I want the best for him because, as a selfish NBA fan, I want to see him dominate. But at this rate it seems more likely that he retires sooner than expected and we talk about Zion as what could have been. That would stink. I hope I am wrong.

Ty Watches the Trailer for "Nope"

When the Super Bowl was on, during a commercial break, they aired the trailer for the new Jordan Peele movie "Nope". I, like everyone else for that matter not involved in the movie, had no idea what the movie is about, but I am damn sure going to see it. Hell, I will even go to a theater if I have to.

The thing with Peele, he has knocked two grand slams out of the park with his first two movies. "Get Out" is original and hilarious and scary and wonderful. Peele got a much deserved and well earned Oscar for that movie. And I liked "Us" even more. Again, it was original and unlike any type of psychological horror movie I have ever seen. I still, to this day, think about the ending of that movie. So when he announced this new movie I knew I was going to see it. I also told myself I would not make the mistake of waiting to see this movie. I do not want a thing spoiled for me, and nowadays, people are spoiling movies left and right. Even if you ask them not to, they will spoil minor details that prove to be major. Luckily I avoided spoilers for "Get Out" and "Us", but I feel like it will be next to impossible to avoid spoilers for "Nope". They will be on the internet moments after the movie is released. So, like I said, I may have to go to a theater on opening night to see this movie. I do not mind wearing a mask, and I can go to an early afternoon show with the hopes that the theater will be pretty empty.

I did watch the trailer during the Super Bowl. I watched it intently. I went so far as to ask my guests, don't worry it was my mom and in-laws, to be quiet so my wife and I could focus, and it was amazing. I have since watched the same trailer four times, just trying to parse what I saw. The good thing about this trailer, there is little to nothing in the way of giving away what the movie may or may not be about. There are horses. I see that Keke Palmer, Daniel Kaluuya and Steven Yeun are, possibly the leads. There also seems to be some kind of thing that blocks out the sun, causing all the lights to go out and the electronics to turn off. We also see people running away, some getting sucked into the sky and Kaluuya riding away on a horse. There is also a commercial shoot in the beginning with Palmer talking about her ranch, at least I think.

When watching this trailer, and then analyzing it, this is exactly what modern movie previews should be. Most trailers give away far too much. Some will spoil major plot lines or twists. It can be very frustrating. But Peele did not do that with this movie or any of his others for that fact. He is so good at showing the littlest bit, but at the same time making you want so much more. Like I said, I have watched the trailer five times and I am still trying to figure out what I saw. But that is great. That makes me want to see what this movie has in store. I want to know what is coming to this town. I want to know what is sucking people into the sky. I want to know about the ranch. I want to know about Yeun's character and his job and how this affects him. I want to know why Palmer runs away screaming "NO NO NO". I want to know why Kaluuya is so calm, yet he rides that horse with a fire in his belly. I just want to know what "Nope" is about. And I also want to see what kind of brilliance Peele has in store with this new movie.

I cannot wait for July 22. And until then, I will be here analyzing the trailer.

"Vice Principals" is an Underrated Television Masterpiece

After finishing "Eastbound and Down" I decided I was going to go back and watch another one of my favorite Danny McBride, Jody Hill fronted shows, "Vice Principals".

I watched it when it first aired on tv. I devoured it in fact. "Eastbound and Down" is an all time classic, next level comedy show, and I figured it would be next to impossible to follow it up with anything remotely close. "Vice Principals" is the rare exception to the rule that the second thing that is made by an artist is not as good. I do firmly believe that "Vice Principals", while a different style of show, is as good as "Eastbound and Down". It just bums me out how incredibly underrated this show was when it was on TV. Hell, it is still underrated now. All three shows that McBride and Hill have done for HBO are incredible, but no one seems to talk about "Vice Principals". "Eastbound and Down" and "The Righteous Gemstones" get much deserved credit, again they are great. But, as I said, how many people actually talk about "Vice Principals"? Not too many in my circle of friends and family. My dad talks about it, and so does RD, but that seems to be it. I have friends who like these types of shows who have never watched it before, or watched it and have never revisited it. I think it got kind of lost in the shuffle. With the success of "Eastbound and Down", and this show being only two seasons, I think too many people just let it pass. That is a mistake. This show needs to be revisited and needs to be celebrated for how great it truly was.

I think what makes this show so great in my opinion is the tonal change from "Eastbound and Down". "Eastbound and Down" was more of a straight forward comedy about a professional athlete who fell on hard times and still thought they were as great as they once were. "Vice Principals" is much darker in tone. There are some heavy, nasty things that happen in this show. The heavy scenes are underscored with comedic stuff, but there is definitely more darkness and bleakness in this show. I also think that making McBride the "good guy" maybe threw some people off. It shouldn't have. He is very good as the foil. It actually is a nice change of pace. But making Walton Goggins the star, the mean guy, the villain, that was a stroke of genius. Goggins is so, so, so good on this show. He should have won multiple Emmys. There are scenes where he is the only person and he absolutely crushes it. He is so vindictive and conniving and cruel and pathetic all at once. It is truly a powerhouse performance.

I also think people may not have been as into the other characters on "Vice Principals" like they were with "Eastbound and Down". April and Stevie and Jason Sudeikes and Andy Daly and so many more are memorable and awesome. But so are Georgia King and Kimberly Herbert Gregory and Edi Patterson and Busy Phillips and Shea Wigham and all the other side characters on "Vice Principals". Edi Patterson, in particular, is phenomenal. This was my first exposure to her acting, and she is hilarious. It is a great jumping off point to now seeing her playing Judy Gemstone now.

"Vice Principals" is dark and funny and just a very, very good show. It did not get its justice when it was on. I think people should go and check this show out once again, especially if you like McBride's other work. "Vice Principals" is a tremendous, and underrated, show. Check it out.

Ty Watches "Game Over Man", Again

During our date night on Friday it was my turn to pick the movie and I chose "Game Over Man". I had seen the movie twice prior to this viewing, but my wife had not watched it yet. I wanted something light and fun and goofy to watch, so it seemed like a great time to show her this movie.

For those that may not know, "Game Over Man" was written, directed and starring the Mail Order Comedy guys. To go even deeper, the MOC guys are the dudes behind "Workaholics", one of my all time favorite shows. I adored that show when it first premiered, I have watched it several times since, I listen to their podcast, I am a fan. So we watched the movie, and I am here to say, I still like it. My wife liked it as well.

First off, the movie is not a good movie. It has issues, it is kind of sloppy and there is some problematic stuff. But I did not go into this on all three watches expecting to see something like "Uncut Gems" or "No Country For Old Men". I knew going into "Game Over Man" that it was going to be over the top, goofy and crazy action comedy. I also fully understood that it was going to be a hyper-realized version of the dudes they played in "Workaholics". I imagine when they wrote this movie they had to have a conversation along the lines of what Ders, Adam Demamp and Blake would do in a wild terrorist situation, and they worked at the place that was being taken over. It has to have happened. What I also imagine, and was confirmed by my wife, that all three of the stars got to pick their wardrobe and how their hair would look as the movie moved along. Adam Devine has his shirt open and he looks like a former athlete. Blake's shirt is tucked in, he has glasses and his hair is pulled back. And Ders has a vest, his bowtie is askew and he has shaggy, unkempt hair. I feel like they wrote perfect for their characters as well. Devine is a drug dealing big time thinker. He wants to be rich. Blake is a quiet worker that just wants to come out of the closet. And Ders is a former athlete who now has to smoke saliva just to get high. He has checked out. As they are helping out at a party for a famous person, all the craziness goes down and they get stuck in the hotel. From there on out it is filled with gory kills, great jokes and an okay enough story to move the movie along. We see a face go into a meat slicer, a guy get impaled by a computer, a guy fall from a big building, many gunshot deaths and even a dead guy get used as a decoy. We also see hilarious stuff like Devine pretending to be dead due to auto erotic asphyxiation, Ders getting super high on saliva, Blake trying as hard as he can to not be loud while using duct tape, the aforementioned zombie guy beating up tons of people and Shaggy performing "It Wasn't Me" at gun point. The story of the movie is simple enough too. The three main guys just want to get rich with a video game idea they have. They try to pitch their idea when all the shit goes down and they end up saving the day even though they are totally inept. They do sell their idea as a video game and do become rich, but it is all a joke how it happens, and my wife and I were laughing the whole way.

Again, "Game Over Man" is not cinema, but it is a damn fun and funny movie to go relax and watch. I will surely watch it 3 to 4 more times. I love putting it on and just vegging out while it plays. And it always finds a way to catch my full attention. Add on the fact that my wife enjoyed herself, and that is icing on the cake. "Game Over Man" is a very, very fun action comedy. Check it out.

Ty Watches the 2022 Super Bowl

I watched the Super Bowl last night, obviously, and I was happy that we got yet another close, down to the wire playoff game. As I say all the time now, the NFL is gross and disgusting and abhorrent and racist, but damn if these playoffs weren't fun as hell. I wait until the playoffs to watch the NFL regularly, and I was very, very pleased with the outcome this season. Going into the Super Bowl, I was not a fan of either team, but I do not actively dislike either team. Each team has dudes I like and dislike. Each team is kind of fun in their own way. Each team has some solid dudes on the team. So watching the game last night, it was fun to see a good game and not have any real stakes involved. I was simply watching as a fan of football. And the game itself did not disappoint.

In the first quarter it looked like the Rams might run away with the game. They scored an easy TD on their first drive, and OBJ had a dope ass TD celebration. I'm not a big fan of celebrations, but when OBJ busted out the moonwalk a smile came across my face. The Bengals answered with a field goal. But just a few drives later the Rams scored yet again, with Matt Stafford hitting a wide open Cooper Kupp in the endzone to push the lead to 13-3. The Rams did miss the extra point, but it seemed like they had all the momentum. But then the Bengals did what they have done all playoffs. They put together a real solid drive. They mixed the pass and the run. Joe Burrow found guys open. Joe Mixon was hitting holes. JaMarr Chase and Tyler Boyd found open spots in the zone defense. And then they ran a trick play, a running back toss pass, and Mixon hit Tee Higgins in the back of the endzone. We had a game. They went to half with the Rams up 13-10.

The halftime was everything I hoped it would be. I am 39 years old, I have listened to hip hop since I was 10, so this halftime show, I feel, was made for someone like me. Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg opened with their classic hits. I was already on board. Then Mary J Blige came out and busted some of her classics. Then we got my favorite, Kendrick Lamar, and he was the cream of the crop for me. And then we got Eminem and Dre doing their thing. It was rad. They crushed. I loved that Eminem took a knee while Dre played piano. When they all joined the middle stage to close the show, I was extremely happy with what I just witnessed. It was one of the best halftime shows I have seen, It kept my attention and I was fully enthralled the entire time. It ruled. Then the second half started.

The Bengals came out and scored on, I believe, the very first play from scrimmage. Burrow hit a wide open Tee Higgins for a 75 yard TD. The replay showed Higgins getting away with an incidental facemask, and he waltzed into the endzone. The Bengals had the lead. They had turned the tide. They would go on to intercept Stafford about two plays later, and they looked like they were going to go up double figures. The Rams defense had other plans. This was when they started to attack the O line and Burrow. They stopped the Bengals on three straight plays and held them to a field goal. That was a big boost for them at that moment. The Bengals could have been up 24-13, but the Rams held strong and it was only a 20-13 lead. Both offenses kind of stalled out for a bit, with the Rams able to muster a field goal to make the score 20-16. The fourth quarter was very fun. There was only one score, but the stakes made each possession fun to watch. The Bengals would drive, but stall. The same could be said about the Rams. There were punts, but with each drop back or run, it felt like something big could happen. With about six minutes left the Rams had the ball and they were down 4. They proceeded to march down the field. I was actually frustrated with the Bengals because they were not really guarding Cooper Kupp, and with OBJ out, the Rams were force feeding Kupp the ball. They abandoned the run and it seemed like Stafford was told to only throw to Kupp. And it worked. They got down in the red zone and this was when the refs decided to get involved. They made a very bad pass interference call on a third and goal. They then called bad offsetting penalties. Then they penalized the Bengals again for a very minor PI call. It was rough to see the refs decide, this late in the game, that it was time to get involved. They let them play until that moment. After the third straight penalty, Stafford dropped back on second and goal and connected with Kupp yet again to take the lead. It was a good throw and an even better catch. It was wild. But the Bengals did have time and two timeouts. They got the ball and made their move to midfield. With under a minute left Burrow connected with Boyd for a 9 yard gain. They ran on second and 1 and got stopped. They then went out of shotgun and ran again and Aaron Donald stuffed the running back. On fourth down, with a short yard needed, I figured they would try the QB sneak. I understand their O line is bad, but I figured they could get the three necessary feet easily. Instead they went in shotgun and called a pass play. And of course Aaron Donald grabbed Burrow and forced him to make a wild throw that fell incomplete.

The game was over. The Rams were the champ. They sacked Burrow seven times. They got the stops when they needed to. They brought in and signed all kinds of big name guys. Cooper Kupp was the rightful MVP. It worked. The Rams turned into the Yankees, and this season it paid off. My hat is off to them. It is also off to the Bengals. These teams more than earned their spot in the Super Bowl, and they played a great game on the biggest stage. I had a blast watching the game, and with the added awesomeness of that halftime show, this was a very good game. Congrats to the Rams, and hopefully we will see both of these continue to be contenders for the next couple of seasons because they are both fun teams. With all this being said, this was a good close to the football season. Now we wait until the fall for more.

Seedsing's Super Bowl 56 Predictions

The Super Bowl is two days away, and I am kind of excited. As I have said before, the NFL is abhorrent, but these playoffs have been an absolute blast. There have been upsets, super close finishes, many overtime games and two new teams.

I did not see the Bengals or the Rams being here, but hey, that is why you play the games. The Rams seem like less of a surprise, but the Bengals are way, way more fun. They are young, confident, fun and easy to root for. The Rams are a team that has bought and paid for super star players. They are in it to win it this year. They are the Yankees of the NFL. I am actively rooting for the Bengals. I want them to win. I want my nephew to feel the euphoria, I want long suffering Bengals fans to gloat, I want to see Joe Burrow and JaMarr Chase win the damn thing, I just want the Bengals to win. But I am a little nervous that it might not happen.

When looking at these two teams they could not be more different. The Rams, as previously stated, were built to compete right away. They have the big names. They have the "sexy" head coach. They got a legit QB. They have a solid defense. They play modern football. The Bengals are different. They are young, They are inexperienced. They did not expect to be here. They are essentially playing with house money. They are fun.

The Rams are favored, and they should be, but do not get it twisted, the Bengals earned this spot. But the Rams seemed destined to win this game. Matthew Stafford is playing the best football of his career this season. He has been on the mark. He is in control of the offense. He is getting a world of help from his O line, Cam Akers, Sony Michel, Tyelr Higbee, Cooper Kuup and Odell Beckham Jr. He had one of the greatest to play in Detroit when they drafted Calvin Johnson, but this is the best collection of offensive talent he has been around. And the Rams defense may be even better. Aaron Donald is the best D lineman in the league. Hell, he may be the best player in the NFL. He is going to be a hall of famer, and he is the GOAT D lineman right now. They were able to trade for Von Miller, and that has only cemented this team as quite possibly the best pass rushing team in the league. And then they have Jalen Ramsey in the secondary to absolutely lock down the other team's best receiver. They have dudes all over the field that just know what they are doing, and they do it at a very, very high level.

The Bengals have some of the best young talent. Joe Burrow is the future at QB. He will be the face of the league at some point. JaMarr Chase has shut everyone up, including me, and is the best young receiver in the game. Teaming him up with Burrow was genius. They have a ton of options out of the backfield. They are a good offense that can be explosive. Just ask the Chiefs. The defense does not have any big name players, but they do their job to near perfection when their backs are against the wall. They shut down Mahomes in the second half and overtime. They would not let Ryan Tannehill or Derrick Henry go off. They have done what is necessary to keep them in games, and eventually win them. But their O line is a disaster. The Tennessee Titans sacked Burrow nine times a few weeks ago and the Chiefs were able to get to Burrow quickly. The Rams pass rush is much better than the Chiefs. I fear that Burrow will be running for his life on Sunday. The Rams also have a better coach. Sean McVay has been to a Super Bowl. He got owned, but it seems like he has adjusted. Zac Taylor is a nice story, but he is not the reason the Bengals are winning games. He isn't some genius play caller. The Bengals are here because of Burrow, Chase and their D coordinator.

For those reasons that is why I think the Rams will win. The game will be close, maybe even go into overtime. That is how these playoffs have been. But because the Rams have a ferocious pass rush, the super star names and a much better head coach, I think they will win. If you want a final score I will say, let's see, 21-17. And I think someone not on offense will be the MVP. I will go with Von Miller to get his second one in this game. With all that, I do want to say, one more time, go Bengals. But I just have a gut feeling the Rams will pull it out. I hope I'm wrong, but I just think the talent is a hair better in LA. Enjoy the game everyone.

Another view

I’m here in Cincinnati so I will pick the Bengals to win, but this is not a homer pick. Here is what the Bengals will do on Sunday to secure their first Super Bowl title.

The defense will let LA score in the first half, they will shut them down in the second half.

Burrow and company will not get much done in the first half, they will get a lot done in the second half.

The Bengals will keep it close and drain the clock in the second half with their running game.

The Rams will throw a killer interception in late in the fourth quarter

A field goal with no time left will win the game.

I know this will happen because that is how the Bengals got here. Patience and no mistakes. Plus the Bengals are way cooler.
